Large, Scott Lead Tide Past South Carolina, 6-4
 Friday, April 22, 2005
  TUSCALOOSA -- Junior right-hander T.J. Large
 allowed three hits over eight
innings and Gabe Scott and Evan Bush each homered to
 lead the No. 15
University of Alabama Crimson Tide to a 6-4 victory
 over No. 8 South
Carolina Gamecocks Friday night at The Joe in the
 weekend series opener.

Despite struggling in the first inning, walking the
 first two Gamecock
batters and giving up a two-run double to Jon
 Willard, Large was solid in
his next seven innings, not giving up a run until
 Gamecock first baseman
Steve Pearce hit a two-run homer in the top of the
 ninth.

These kind of games are always fun, said Large,
 especially when we win.
The whole team was really into it tonight. I don't
 think I saw one person
sitting on the bench all night. I think I had too
 much adrenaline in the
first inning but then I finally calmed down and
 found the strike zone. That
first inning is always my toughest.

Large (6-3) went eight innings, giving up three hits
 and four runs. He
struck out two and walked four.

The Gamecocks (29-10, 9-7 SEC) were first on the
 scoreboard when Willard
drove in shortstop Steven Tolleson and left fielder
 Michael Campbell,
runners who were both walked, with a two run double
 to right center.

Alabama (28-12, 10-6 SEC) jumped on the board in the
 bottom of the sixth
when Scott, who extended his SEC leading 27 straight
 games in the bottom of
the first, doubled to score designated hitter Allen
 Rice. Bush then slammed
his 12th home run of the season -- a two run shot to
 left field, to give the
 Crimson Tide a 3-2 lead.

Bama would add insurance in the bottom of the eighth
 inning when Scott hit a
solo home run, his eighth of the year, to put the
Tide up 4-2. With two outs
and first baseman Zac Welch on first, right fielder
 Morrow Thomley hit a
triple to left field, scoring Welch. A throwing
 error by South Carolina
shortstop Steven Tolleson allowed Thomley to safely
 reach home and give
 Alabama a 6-2 lead.

The lead was cut to 6-4 in the top of the ninth off
 of Pearce's two run
blast. David Robertson was then called to the mound,
 earning his third save
of the year by throwing a scoreless inning while
 striking out two Carolina
 batters.

Alabama and Carolina meet in game two of this three
 game series with a 3:06
p.m. (CT) on Saturday, April 23. The game will be
 televised as the SEC Game
of the Week by FSN South. UA will send sophomore
 lefty Wade LeBlanc (2-2
4.18 ERA) to the mound against USC senior
 right-hander Jason Fletcher (4-2,
 2.50 ERA).

 GAME NOTES:

*No. 15 Alabama beat No. 8 South Carolina 6-4 in the
 series opener at
 Sewell-Thomas Stadium Friday night.

*Alabama is 7-6 against Top 25 teams this season and
 owns a 6-4 record
against teams ranked in the Top 10.

*Alabama won its 10th SEC game of the season,
 equaling its conference win
 total from last year.

*Of Alabama's 16 SEC games, 10 have been decided by
 two runs or less.

*Junior RHP T.J. Large (6-3, 2.40 ERA) won his sixth
 game of the season with
a 6-4 win over No. 8 South Carolina. Large walked
 three of the first four
batters he faced in the game and allowed two
 first-inning runs on Jon
Williard's two-out double to right center field.

*After the two-out double, Large did not allow
 another hit until
back-to-back hits by Steven Tolleson and Steve
 Pearce in the ninth inning.
Large 7 1/3 no-hit innings in the game. The
 Seminole, Fla., native gave up
two hits in the ninth inning, including a two-run
 home run to Steve Pearce
as USC cut the lead to 6-4.

*Large threw 24 pitches in the first inning, with
 only 10 strikes. He threw
87 pitches the remainder of the game.

*Freshman RHP David Robertson (6-3, 1.44 ERA, 3 SV)
 pitched a scoreless
ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
 He has three of the
Crimson Tide's six saves this season.

*Robertson's save tonight was the first in an SEC
 game this year by Alabama.

*Senior LF Gabe Scott (3-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) singled
 off the top of the
left-center field wall in the bottom of the first
 inning to extend his
hitting streak to 27 consecutive games. Scott's
 streak ties Ole Miss' Brian
Pettway for the longest hitting streak in the SEC
 this season. The 27-game
hitting streak is also the third-longest in Alabama
 baseball history, tying
David Magadan's streak as a true freshman (the first
 27 games of his career)
 in 1981.

*During the streak, Scott is batting .453
 (43-for-95) with 24 runs scored,
nine home runs and 25 RBI.

*Scott has hit nine home runs this season, all since
 April 1st. He has
homered in back-to-back games for Alabama.

*Junior 3B Evan Bush. (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) hit his
 12th home run of the
 season as

Alabama received a commitment on Friday and is on
 the verge of receiving
one from another north Alabama product. North
 Jackson running
back/defensive back Ali Sharieff chose the Crimson

defensive back Michael Ricks of R.A. Hubbard is set
 to pledge to Alabama.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Sharieff, who is expected
 to play running back
at Alabama, actually switched his commitment from
 Auburn to the Crimson
 Tide.

Ricks has been considered a lock for Alabama, but
 the 6-foot-2,
185-pounder wanted to wait until his prep season
 ended. Ricks finished
with 11 interceptions and led his team into the
 Class 1A final on
Friday. R.A. Hubbard lost to Sweet Water 35-7 in the
 championship game.

I don't know who to root for either. My head says
 go
with AU. It's better for the conference and who
 wants
Phat Phil to ever get another conference
 championship?

Yep I see what you and Ron are saying. I was just

  looking at the
scenario of what would happen if UT beat AU.
 Ron's
  probably right about
AU being left out of the BCS slots because of the

  Utes and Cal. Wouldn't
that just break all our hearts? :) Although, like
 I
  said last night,
it's hard as hell for me to pull for UT over the
  Aubs, based on what has
happened over the past few years.

 had
identical 6-4 records. If all three had lost on

   Rivalry
Weekend, the Peach Bowl committee would've had
 a
   tough
decision to make. As it turns out, the three
   contenders
went 1-2 on Rivalry Weekend so I'd have to say
 the
decision to pick Florida was a no-brainer. I
 might
   be
badly mistake, but I wouldn't buy a Peach Bowl
   ticket
unless I wanted to see Florida / Virginia Tech
   game.

Don't forget about Arkansas. If they can knock
 off
   LSU,
they'll finish with a 6-5 record at which point
 the
Houston Bowl comes into play. Then we'd be
 looking
   at
the Music City, Independence, and Houston Bowl
   choosing
from Bama, Arkansas and USC. In that scenario,
 I
   think
Bama winds up in the Independence.

 Because of the

 the first two fatalities.

 We did have some

Technically, I think the eye went ashore in Gulf

pounded the gulf coast from Panama City, past

It will be quite a while before Bay County is back
 to normal, but not
nearly as long as it will be for Pensacola/Gulf
 Shores. They were just
devastated. Basically, you can't get to Pensacola.
 I10 and Hwy 98 are
both closed, and it will be weeks (for Hwy 98) to
 months (I10) before
they are open again. There is severe flooding and
 massive damage.

We can only thank God that there were not a lot more
 people killed.

Very well done.

Tide with solid performance in SEC opener

Tide running back Ray Hudson ran for 116 yards and a
 touchdown in Bama’s
 win.

 By: Daniel Rasmussen 9/12/04

Last week against Utah State, Alabama wasted no time
 in coming out and
making a statement. They had the big plays, they
 committed few
penalties, and they did not turn the ball over. All
 positive things that
left Bama fans feeling good about their next game:
 the SEC opener
 against the Ole Miss Rebels.

There is a slight difference, though, from playing a
 team like Utah
State that went 3-9 last year, and playing a team
 that contested for the
SEC West title in 2003. Not to take anything away
 from Utah State: they
have a fine quarterback, and are much improved from
 last year. But this
being the Tide’s first SEC game, you knew it wasn’t
 going to be the same
as last week. That was evident from the beginning.

Junior quarterback Brodie Croyle started off solid
 again, but Alabama
began making careless mistakes. Alabama senior
 tailback Ray Hudson
fumbled after trying to cut through traffic with
 only one hand
protecting the ball. Brodie Croyle hooked up with
 tight end Clint
Johnston for a first down, but an illegal shift
 penalty brought that
back. Brandon Brooks attempted to return a punt by
 fielding it off of a
bounce instead of calling for a fair catch,
 resulting in the Tide’s
 second turnover in one quarter.

But as much as we can sit here and criticize
 Alabama’s shaky start, we
can just as easily give them the benefit of the
 doubt: it’s only the
second game of the season, mistakes will be made
 this early.

It’s Bama’s first SEC game this year, and you’re
going to have a lot of
guys trying to prove something. You’ll have players,
 especially on a
team as young as Alabama, get too excited at times.

However, after the Tide’s first two turnovers, they
 handled their
offense very effectively. And as Alabama football
 has been for quite
some time, a good offense began with the running
 game.

Yes, Brodie Croyle, arguably one of the three best
 quarterbacks in the
Southeastern Conference, was firing those bullets to
 our promising young
receivers early. But it was the running
 back-by-committee between the
trio of Ray Hudson, Kenneth Darby, and Tim Castille
 that relentlessly
ran it down the throat of the Ole Miss defense,
 eventually tiring them out.

Tide coach Mike Shula was forced to answer several
 questions regarding
the status of the offensive line for most of the
 summer. Justin Smiley
left the team after his junior season to apply for
 the NFL, as did
Dennis Alexander. Alabama also lost their most
 versatile lineman off the
bench in Atlas Herrion due to graduation. Despite
 these setbacks,
Alabama has yet again showcased a very solid
 offensive front in their
first two games. Even with Wesley Britt returning
 from a broken leg last
season, Evan Mathis moving from right tackle to left
 guard, and with
Kyle Tatum now on the line transferring from the
 defensive side of the
ball. The hog mollies up front provided those holes
 that our talented
running backs can find. The line isn’t spectacular,
 but it’s looked very
 solid.

As sharp and consistent as Brodie Croyle looked with
 his 169 passing
yards, and as dominating as the running game looked
 with the triple
threat of Hudson, Darby, and Castille, the most
 pleasing point of the
night had to be the defense.

What looked the best was Alabama’s

aggressiveness. They moved to the ball very

well and pressured Ole Miss quarterback

 Michael Spurlock, eventually taking him

out of the game. Spurlock was held to

only 54 yards passing, completing only

 33 percent of those passes.

The big play of the night came on

a blitz thrown by Bama when junior

free safety Roman Harper fired through

the gaps, putting Spurlock in the turf,

and the ball on the ground. The fumble

was recovered by linebacker Juwan Garth.

Alabama linebackers DeMeco Ryans and Juwan Garth
 celebrate after forcing
 a turnover.

“We were blitzing from the outside. We switched and
 called my number
from the middle. I didn’t know what happened until I
 saw guys diving for
the ball,” Harper said of the turnover, which led to
 a Bama score.

Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe stressed the
 fact that the Rebels
needed to establish a running game. Alabama’s
 defense disrupted that
game plan from the get-go. Another positive from the
 Tide defense, which
is prone every now and then to give up the deep
 ball, is that they did
not allow the big play to happen, unlike last season
 when these two
teams squared off, and a guy by the name of Eli
 Manning completely
 embarrassed the Tide.

“We were anemic offensively again,” Cutcliffe said
 after the Tide’s 28-7
win. “But give Alabama credit, they

It's our honor and privilege to introduce ...

 By Ivan Maisel
 ESPN.com

I'm college football, and I'm reporting for duty.

My fellow Americans, this is the most important
 season of our lifetime.

We come together today because a new season is upon
us. Not just a new season, but a new era. From the
Atlantic Coast Conference to the Pacific-10, from
the Big East to the Western Athletic, we are ready
to embark on a journey to new places.

We have changed our leagues, we have changed our
rules and we have changed our recruiting of the next
generation of student-athletes, the young men who
provide us with hope and, if we are head coaches,
 seven-figure incomes.

But we cannot go forward without being firmly
 grounded.

We can never forget the traditions that brought us
to this time and place. So it is that when we closed
the door of the Superdome last January, the top
three teams in the nation were LSU, USC and
Oklahoma. And so it is that when our coaches
exercised their democratic right in the preseason
poll, the top three teams were USC, Oklahoma and
 LSU.

My friends, I am honored to share this day with
Tigers coach Nick Saban and Trojans coach Pete
Carroll, who are the living embodiment that every
vote counts, unless you vote in the final USA
 Today/ESPN poll.

To those who say the same teams will forever be at
the top of college football, I say, opportunity
exists for everyone. It is part of the American
birthright. Any university that takes the
opportunity of raising $45 million for an athletic
budget can compete for the national championship.

With the onset of the 2004 season, Miami and
Virginia Tech have shifted from the Big East to the
Atlantic Coast Conference. When Boston College
arrives next year, it will be, as Maryland coach
Ralph Friedgen put it, truly an Atlantic Coast
Conference. No discussion of which conference is the
best may begin without the ACC.

Yet we have to be aware of the price that the ACC
has paid in the loss of trust from its allies. The
conferences must leave behind the mindset of, 'I
don't care where I end up, as long as they are as
screwed as we are.' We must look forward to the day
when BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo can dine in
the same room as Big East officials and not employ a
 food tester.

Earlier this year, in a summit of historic
proportions, university presidents agreed to provide
greater opportunity to reach the BCS. In the past,
the BCS conferences believed in college football run
by the right people, their people. They thought that
college football should concentrate wealth and power
in the hands of the powerful. With the guidance of
educators such as Tulane president Scott Cowen, we
no longer have a sport in which there are BCS
members and non-BCS members. There are only Division
 I-A members.

Some of which have a greater chance of going to a
 BCS bowl than others.

The non-BCS, uh, mid-major, uh, historically
challenged I-A conferences are the lifeblood of
college football. My friends, we cannot survive
without the volunteer spirit that made this sport
what it is. Let us not forget that when Alabama
wanted to dump Penn State out of fear of not
qualifying for a bowl and the Crimson Tide needed a
home game it could win, Utah State said send me.

And when Clemson needed a home game against a
non-conference opponent to slide between midseason
games against fellow ACC contenders Virginia and
Maryland, Utah State said send me.

And when the Western Athletic Conference, having
been ransacked by Conference USA, which had been
pillaged by the Big East, which had been picked
clean by the ACC -- when the WAC needed local
members, beginning in 2005, Utah State said send me.

My friends, this season will have its share of
innuendo and half-truths. We do not live by the
bulletin board. I say to all coaches, let's be
optimists, not just opponents. I am also honored to
share this day with Texas coach Mack Brown, who has
withstood a campaign of negativity and pessimism,
and that's just from the Texas Exes.

We will not allow rumor to go uncontested, untruth
to go unchecked. It is simply not true that when
faced with the challenge of playing Oklahoma at the
Cotton Bowl on Oct. 9, Brown said send Utah State.

In an age of technological wonder, the truth is
easier to see than ever. We must recognize today the
Big Ten, the conference that represents the
heartland of the sport. The Big Ten will boldly
examine the use of instant replay on an experimental
 basis this season.

The NFL has achieved this milestone with the
possibility of eight camera angles on every play,
and a system in which the coach on the sideline must
weigh the risk and reward of challenging the call on

Had to bust my ass this AM at work to get through as

to go to the downtown courthouse and get my truck
 registered, etc... It was the
last day I could do it all without penalty. I've
 been to the courthouse 2x
already this month but ran into 4 hour lines and
 very foul county workers.

I got to the courthouse at about 12:15 today and
parked on the west side of Linn
Park. I had to walk to the AmSouth building to get
some cash to pay for my
registration. On the way we (a girl who works for me
 and me) passed the north
side of Linn Park where Mayfield ice cream had 2
tents up and was giving away
free ice cream. COOL! Got a little ice cream and
 headed to get cash.

We walked back up to the south entrance to Linn Park
 to cut through to the
courthouse. There was a tv camera there and an
assload of people in line for
something other than ice cream. I stopped and looked
and saw Coach Shula about 3
feet from me. I about shit. I had no idea he was was
going to be there signing autographs.

Now, the decision. Be a responsible adult and get my
 truck registered and all
that shit done and get home in time to take my
daughter to the airport or go to
my truck, grab my football and Sharpie (which I keep
in my truck for just such
an occasion) and get an autograph. If I go to the
 courthouse first I risk the
chance of missing the autograph session. If I get
 the autograph I will probably
not have time to get my shit done at the courthouse
 (they are so speedy there)
and get to the airport in time to see my daughter
 off.

I decided that I am a damn adult today. I took the
 responsible route. I got my
shit done. I missed a VERY rare opportunity to get
Coach Shula to sign my ball
(stop snickering Krut). I made the right choice but
that leads me back to the

GUILBEAU: Tide should get over it, move on
Glenn Guilbeau / Louisiana Gannett News
 Posted on July 29, 2004
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - It took some 20 years for most
University of Alabama people to realize that Bear
Bryant indeed died in January of 1983.

Just a few years ago, footage of the Bear growling
unintelligibles was played before Crimson Tide games
at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Bryant was actually listed
as an intangible advantage in a matchup graphic on
the morning of the 2001 LSU-Alabama game in the
Tuscaloosa News despite him being dead for 17 years.

Now, this pitiful dysfunctional family with three
years remaining on its latest NCAA probation can't
seem to let the fact that Tennessee turned it in to
 the NCAA die.

Former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and
Ivy Williams filed a $60 million defamation lawsuit
against the NCAA several months after Alabama
received its second round of major NCAA sanctions in
seven years in 2002. Apparently, they were finding
it harder to get a job than to recruit.

Cottrell and Williams and their attorneys contend
Fulmer and the NCAA conspired against Alabama, which
was punished for major recruiting violations
involving Alabama booster Logan Young and star
prospect Albert Means of Memphis. Young allegedly
payed Means $150,000 in 1999 to Means' high school
coach to go to Alabama. Attorneys for Cottrell and
Williams contend the NCAA, acting like the FBI, let
violations by Tennessee go if Fulmer would turn in
 Alabama.

In 2000, Fulmer and staff spoke to NCAA investigator
Rich Johanningmeier about Alabama. In November, the
NCAA notified Alabama it would be questioning
players and coaches about rules violations. Soon,
 Alabama was back on probation.

Fulmer has decided not to attend Tennessee's portion
of the Southeastern Conference Media Days on
Thursday because his attorneys told him he may be
served a subpoena for the defamation suit set to go
to trial next June. Fulmer, who doesn't have to play
in the state of Alabama until 2005, also said he
feared his safety so close to Alabama's den. I don't
blame him one bit. There's no telling what these
 fans might do.

Fulmer has been fined $10,000 by the SEC, which is
miffed at his absence. In a cute bit of scheduling,
the SEC had Fulmer set to appear before Alabama
coach Mike Shula and players on Thursday along with
LSU and South Carolina in the undercard.

Yes fans, Alabama-Tennessee has actually replaced
Alabama-Auburn in terms of hate in these parts.
Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville and players spoke
Tuesday with nary a word about Alabama. What is
going on? This Alabama-Tennessee story has been
percolating in Alabama for nearly a year, but it has
not been as big in the rest of the SEC states, well,
with the Iraq war and all. It has gotten ugly and
 sadly silly.

Alabama people have served up Fulmer as its round
mound of revenge for all the ills that have beset
its once-proud program. The Tide is headed for its
fourth losing season in eight years with no relief
in sight as NCAA scholarship reductions set in. And
it's got to be somebody else's fault. This is the
same fandom that once said national poll voters kept
the Tide down because of the state of Alabama's poor
 civil rights record.

Other SEC and Big Ten coaches also reported Alabama
violations to the NCAA, but Alabama wants Fulmer.
Perhaps because he is 8-1 against Bama? Coaches
turning in other programs is nothing new. Fulmer may
have done it with more zest than others, but he was
proven right. Alabama IS on probation.

Fulmer is surely no saint. Former Alabama player
Kenny Smith and his mother filed a defamation suit
against Fulmer in April alleging Fulmer said Smith's
mother was involved with an Alabama assistant.
Another allegation via Alabama attorneys says Fulmer
established a credit line for former Vol star John
Henderson. But Fulmer is not the guilty party here,
yet. Alabama is, no matter how much its lawyers
 blame Tennessee.

I understand that Coach Fulmer had to weigh all the
advice he was getting and make a decision, SEC
commissioner Mike Slive said Tuesday. I can't put
 myself in his shoes.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement from the commish
for Fulmer.Slive came to this league two years ago
with a promise to clean it up. Yet he seems to want
to keep it in the family more than he wants the
family clean. His new rule establishing a protocol
for turning in member schools made UT sound more
guilty than the school it helped find guilty, which
 was Alabama.

Instead of admonishing and fining Fulmer, Slive
should be telling Alabama people to drop the
lawsuits, stop cheating and get over it.

[RollTideFan] Marsh takes over Yeagers job.

2004-07-16 Thread Steven Johnson
Interesting.

RTR
LC

Tide's Marsh gets new job: Infractions chief
Friday, July 16, 2004
Gene Marsh was excited. Almost bubbly even. You could
hear it in his voice over the phone Thursday
afternoon.

And why not?

His son Elliott's Dixie Youth baseball team just won
its district championship and is headed to Troy for
the state tournament.

That's my only comment about sports, Marsh said.
The Infractions Committee doesn't matter. My son's
all-star team does.

Marsh would not comment on the impending development
that will put him and the committee back in the news,
at least in a state where the NCAA justice system is
always a hot topic.

The Alabama law professor is about to move up from
vice-chair to chairman of the NCAA Infractions
Committee. The former faculty rep is going to be the
chief justice on the second highest court in the land
of college sports.

Second highest because the NCAA Infractions Appeals
Committee does have the power to overturn the
decisions of the Infractions Committee.

Of course, that happens about as often as Tommy
Gallion and Phillip Fulmer go to dinner together.

Marsh is going to succeed Thomas Yeager as the
Infractions Committee chairman. Yeager is the
commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Association, but
around here, he's better known as the man who pointed
a shotgun at Alabama football and a popgun at Auburn
basketball.

You don't chair the Infractions Committee in search of
popularity. Yeager's not at the top of every Alabama
football fan's Enemies List - the only poll in which
Fulmer is No. 1 - but the outgoing chairman makes the
top 10.

Marsh, who's in his second three-year term on the
Infractions Committee, said he didn't want to comment
because his appointment is not official. It's not, but
it's only a matter of time.

The Division I Management Council will meet Monday and
Tuesday in Baltimore. One of the items on its agenda
is to vote on a new Infractions Committee chairman.

That vote is expected to be a formality. According to
the Management Council meeting's written agenda, the
Infractions Committee met in June and voted to
recommend that Marsh succeed Yeager as chairman.

Marsh's term will begin Sept. 1 and run for two years.

What does this mean for Alabama? It's an honor to have
one of your own chosen for such an important position,
but as the school knows, friends in high places don't
always help you beat the rap.

His Infractions Committee colleagues praised Marsh at
the conclusion of Alabama's last football case even as
they buried the program.

If the Tide goes on trial again, no one will be able
to save it.

But Marsh as chairman could be the best thing to
happen to major programs accused of major violations
because he's been on both sides. He's the right person
to hold the enforcement staff to the same high
standard as the schools it investigates.

The last chairman never felt the pain of a guilty
verdict and a harsh sentence aimed at a school he
defended. The new chairman has.

That's why Marsh is sure to demand that the people
charged with nabbing the NCAA's lawbreakers follow the
NCAA's laws every step of the way.

Kevin Scarbinsky's column appears Sunday, Monday,
Wednesday and Friday.

CECIL HURT: 'Outsiders’ see good things coming to
 Tide

There is something that takes root every year about
 this time around the
University of Alabama football program, no matter
 what is done to
eradicate it. Obviously, we’re not talking about
 grass. We’re talking
 about optimism.

It’s only natural, with football season less than
 eight weeks away, that
Crimson Tide fans would be encouraged about the
 upcoming season. What’s
different about this year, though, is that some of
 the brightest
sunshine seems to be coming from outside Tuscaloosa.

For instance, take Phil Steele’s 2004 Football
 Preview, a magazine that
won high marks for prescience a year ago when it
 predicted not only a
fifth-place SEC West finish for Alabama, but also
 correctly tabbed LSU
instead of 2003’s trendy pick, Auburn, to win the
 division.

This year, Steele has a seat near the front of the
 Alabama bandwagon,
predicting that the Tide will be second “most
 improved team in the
country. (To the chagrin of some Tide fans, he
 thinks the most improved
will be Texas AM, and, in keeping with the
 “ex-Alabama coaches theme,
he tabs UTEP as the third most improved.) Steele
 picks Alabama second in
the division and boldly states that Alabama could
 “swagger into
Knoxville with a 7-0 record in October.

On top of that, the Las Vegas Review-Journal
 reported earlier this week
that one of the most popular propositions this
 summer in Nevada, where
one can legally wager, is “Alabama over-7. That
 means that people are
risking green, folding money on a proposition that
 pays off only if the
Crimson Tide wins more than seven games this season,
 and the assumption
is that not all those people are Alabama fans.

So why is America, or at least some of America,
 bullish on Crimson Tide
football for 2004? Is it simply a case where they
 look at the crimson
jerseys and the history books, and don’t realize the
 modern-day reality
that NCAA sanctions have created? Or are some people
 in Tuscaloosa,
hardened by a four-year stretch in which misery has
 been relieved only
by occasional treachery, simply refuse to expect
 anything good to
 happen, even if they should?

That’s the mystery of the upcoming season, and part
 of its intrigue. For
my part, it’s too early to start throwing around
 predictions. There are
still recruits in limbo, and academic issues to be
 resolved for some
current players. There are players like A.C. Carter,
 who might be major
contributors or might still have health issues to
 overcome.

Injury may be the No. 2 variable (behind coaching)
 in determining this
team’s destiny. It will be easier to weigh those
 variables in late
 August, not mid-July

Every one of those issues is magnified because
Alabama is not as deep as
many of the teams it plays. The schedule, in which
 the most difficult
games seems to be loaded onto the back end, could be
 a blessing, or a
curse, depending on how things go in September.

When there are that many variables, Alabama-watchers
 can be excused if
they expect at least a few to go sour. The last four
 years would do
that, even to the most stout-hearted loyalist. It’s
 a direct reversal of
the Alabama attitude in the 1960s and 1970s, when
 Crimson Tide fans
assumed that even if things did go wrong at some
 point, “Coach Bryant
 will fix it.

It probably won’t take a lot of success to start
 Alabama fans thinking
that way again, though. And it has to be encouraging
 that at least a few
people who aren’t anywhere close to Alabama think
 that good things just
 might happen.

Coe denies helping NCAA case against UA

 By Christopher Walsh
 Sports Writer
 July 15, 2004

 Email this story.

MONTGOMERY | Saying he was misled and
 misrepresented in statements
used in an investigation of the University of
 Alabama football
program, Alabama State University football coach
 Charlie Coe fired
back at the National Collegiate Athletics
 Association on Wednesday
 afternoon.

He directly attacked the credibility of the NCAA
 and investigator
 Richard Johanningmeier in particular.

Coe made his comments after finding out about an
 NCAA summary
document that implicated him as a confidential
 source earlier this
week. He emphatically denied being a secret witness
 and said he
never gave any information regarding the Crimson
 Tide or anyone
 associated with the program.

“The statements that were read to me were untrue,
 Coe said of the
 summary. “It’s pretty disheartening.

Coe held a press conference at the law offices of
 Thomas, Means,
 Gillis Seay in Montgomery.

Tyrone Means, Montgomery attorney Tommy Gallion and
 Delaine
Mountain, a Tuscaloosa attorney, represent former
 UA assistant
coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in their
 $60 million
defamation lawsuit of the NCAA and others.

“I never would have told on him because he’s a
 friend, Coe said
of Williams. “I pride myself on helping coaches,
 especially young
coaches. Their reputations have to be up-front.'

Coe was an assistant at the University of Memphis
 during the
Albert Means recruiting scandal, which helped lead
 to NCAA
sanctions against Alabama. The Crimson Tide was
 placed on five
years probation, with a two-year bowl ban and
 reduced scholarships.

Coe said he briefly met with Johanningmeier, the
 NCAA’s chief
investigator in the Alabama case, but he said he
 only answered
questions about Means and Trezevant High School
 assistant coach Lynn Lang.

Lang has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy after
 being accused of
soliciting money in return for directing Means to
 sign with
various colleges -- of which only Alabama has been
 penalized.

“He told me it would cost $200,000, Coe said of
 his dealings with
Lang. “I told him it wouldn’t cost me two cents
 because I don’t
buy players. My reputation means a lot more to me
 than paying for a player.

“I told Lang that he was doing the same thing that
 black people
had been trying to get away from for years, being
 sold.

In addition to his conversation with
 Johanningmeier, Coe said he
told the same thing to the grand jury in the
 criminal case against
Logan Young, a former Alabama booster.

In both situations, Coe claims no one asked about
 Alabama,
 Cottrell, Williams or Young.

Young is awaiting trial on charges of giving Lang
 $150,000 for
Means, who signed with Alabama but later went to
 Memphis.

The summary became public knowledge as part of the
 criminal case
 against Young in Memphis, Tenn.

“I affirm that the document exists, Memphis-based
 attorneys
Philip Shanks said. “Apparently, it was stolen on
 May 7 because I
can’t find a copy of it.

Shanks, who is not an attorney of record in the
 Cottrell and
Williams case because criminal changes were never
 filed against
them in Tennessee, was referring to the break-in to
 his office in
which he was attacked from behind and knocked
 unconscious.

Almost 100 pounds of files relating to the Team
 Cottrell case
disappeared. According to police records, a wallet,
 cash and two
Alabama rings were also reported missing.

However, Shanks still has notes on the document
 regarding the July
27, 2000, meeting involving Coe and Lang held in
 the defensive
coaches’ conference room at Memphis. Included in
 the notes is the
 following quote:

“A complete record of the interview is contained on
 tape and
maintained on file in the national office. The
 interview was tape
recorded with Coe’s knowledge and consent.

 Coe vehemently denied that.

“At no time did he tell me that I was a secret
 witness or I was
being taped, Coe said. “I was unaware of being
 taped, if I was
 being taped at all.

“That conversation took about all of five minutes.

Coe said that after receiving a telephone call from
 Williams on
Monday, he contacted Johanningmeier to question and
 protest his
 inclusion in the investigation.

According to Coe, Johanningmeier told him that he
 was not a
 confidential source against Alabama.

However, when Coe asked to see what information was

Re: [RollTideFan] With Kines, this is what is missed...

Kines was not a good D coorinator the first time and
won't be now. For the life of me I can't figure out
why CMS would consult Perkins when he still has his
dad

When Shula got the HC job, his *mentor* on how to

ran a good D, but his ship has long been sunk. Even
with a new AD, sunk. If Kines goes anywhere soon,
it'll be to an *office* position.

You like the way Shula is handling the HC
job...consider who his advisor is. It's not his
 Dad, it's not CMM...

Now, I don't like the fashion in which a few things
broke down last year...but, the thought/notion it
falls on Kines shoulders? Ain't so. In fact, a lot
of it falls on DuBose/fRan and the type of players
 they brought in.

I'm still chanting for him the season hasn't
 even started yet. I have
   zero faith in Kines.

I'm with you on the zero faith in Kines part, but
 I'm still straddling the
fence on Oliver. No doubt he is one of the best
 defensive minds ever, but
I'm not sure that his dreams of getting the head
 coaching job are totally
out of his head. He could end up undermining Shula
 every chance he got and
become a cancer on the staff. Right now, I would
 probably be on the side
 of
get rid of Kines and leave Oliver at the lake
 with the grandkids.

Apart from the fact that God encourages His children
(Christians) not to give up meeting together as some
are in the habit of doing (Hebrews 10:25), there are
many other reasons why a Christian should attend
 church.

First of all, the church is a great place to help us
grow as a Christian. Not only do we learn more and
more about God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and
God the Holy Spirit, but as we're involved in the
ministries of the church (such as Bible study), we
come to learn more and more of what the Bible says
about living a victorious Christian life (a life
which is most pleasing to God).

A Bible study class is also a great place to meet,
and be actively involved with, other Christians.
For some, it's also a place where they can serve the
Lord and others as a teacher or other worker.

Being involved in a local Christian church also
gives us an avenue through which we can serve God
and others. Remember, God encourages His children
to use the Spiritual gift, that all of His children
receive from Him, through the Holy Spirit, serving
others, faithfully administering His grace in its
various forms (1 Peter 4:10). There is a place,
within the church, where everyone can get involved,
if only, they will do so

 (1 Corinthians 12:12-31; Romans 12:4-8).

The worship service, within the church, is a great
time where all of God's children can come together
in praise and worship of God. To miss the Sunday
morning, or evening, worship service is like
starting the week off on the wrong foot, it's like
having a void in one's life throughout the week.

Being actively involved in a local Christian church
also keeps us accountable for the things we do in
our lives. When we separate ourselves from the
church, we begin to drift in our Christian life; we
become more and more involved in the ways of the
world, rather, than, the ways of God. Yes, it is
true that church attendance does not make one a
Christian (faith in Christ Jesus as one's Lord and
Savior does), however, one who is a Christian will
not live as good a Christian life, as they would
have, had they been actively involved in a local
Christian church (a church which believes in, and
teaches, the Bible; a church which lifts up and
 preaches Christ Jesus).

I tend to agree with both of y'all.

Joe is right about finding the right church. I've
 tried many (same with
spouses) and only found one that I actually
enjoyed going to. But seeing as
to how my ex- and her hubby frequent that church
now, I tend to stay away
from that one. I attend church with the current
 Mrs. Perry and her family.
The average age is somewhere around 70, so I sit
 quietly and hope no one
  dies during church.

But I also agree with Sonja whole-heartedly. Many
 people go to church in
order to say they go to church. I'm not about
 that. On Sunday mornings, I
listen to old bluegrass-gospel CDs that I made (I
 guess I'll burn in Hell
for illegally downloading the songs). That type of
 music provides me with
more of a 'religious' experience than I have
received at any church. I find
that listening to the music, sipping coffee and
 watching nature provides the
  calm that I look for.

I feel I don't need a church in order to
 experience the Afterlife. Maybe
that's wrong, maybe not. But like someone once
said If dogs don't go to
Heaven, I want to go where they go.

I appreciate your position Joe, but my experience
 is that organized religion
is full of hypocrisy and not something I want to
 indulge in. I have better
things to do on Sunday (Saturday, Wednesday or
whenever)than to show up at a
church, see and be seen with my rah!, rah!...I am
 a christian sign.

I choose of my own free will to live a decent
life, be a good wife and
mother, go to work every day and pay my taxes. If
 that doesn't get me to
where I want to be in the hereafter, well...then I
 wasn't meant to be there
  anyway.

The way I understand it is that we ALL have a
private line to God. I choose
to use mine frequently and I do not need
 interpreters.

  Respectfully,
  Sonja

  This isn't good people...

Apparently Stover is claiming he was paid to sign
 with us. The plan
was for him to get some help on qualifying, when
 that didn't happen,
he got ticked and went to the NCAA. The good news
 is that NONE of the
present staff was involved. This is why he said he
 would have to be
  re-recruited. I know I'll be called a barner or a
 vile for posting
this, but it's already happened. This sux.
