I can TOTALLY understand why Mike is a little pissed. In my opinion he has
put a lot of time and apparently some amount of HIS OWN money into this
and basically all he has gotten in return is bitching and moaning. Hell,
I'd be more than a little pissed if I were in his shoes.

I don't personally understand all the differences between a service and a
server, but I think I get the basic idea. I think I like the idea of a
server better where we run our own service and make our ouw rules, but,
to be honest it doesn't make that much of a difference to me.

I don't know what the answer is, but I know that the guy that made this
forum possible deserves a big thank you and he just got one from me.

Now, maybe we could discuss this issue with some civility, but since this
is RTF, I doubt that. That's OK, the tagline used to say wear a cup and
that still applies. That's what we like about this place anyways.

Re: [RollTideFan] ADMIN Notice For RollTideFan

2005-07-14 Thread Rick McMahan
For the record, I started this little pissing contest when I complained
about it taking between 1 and 2 hours for our posts to make it through
to the list. That was my only complaint and a valid one as far as I'm
concerned. Maybe it doesn't bother anyone else, if not so be it.
Personally I find it very irritating and it will be even more so when
football season gets here. As usual there are no easy answers and life
truly is a bitching contest.

server better where we run our own service and make our ouw rules, but,
to be honest it doesn't make that much of a difference to me.

I don't know what the answer is, but I know that the guy that made this
forum possible deserves a big thank you and he just got one from me.

Now, maybe we could discuss this issue with some civility, but since this
is RTF, I doubt that. That's OK, the tagline used to say wear a cup and

Rick, ror the record, you don't get the credit this time.

My wife talked me into allowing pictures HTML just like many have been wanting
for a long time. I announced it and got a smart-assed reply from someone.

I do not consider this a pissing contest but a discussion on the future and
history of the list that we all (hopefully) love.

As far as the perceived server trouble is concerned, I will not be moving the
list until a proven better server is found. I appreciate Charles' suggestion but
$39/month is way to high a bill for me to foot alone. We had a poll a while
back and the majority of those who took the time to respond said they didn't
think the list was worth changing over to a subscription. So here we are.

I think everyone for the good karma words but they are not necessary. Please.

RE: [RollTideFan] ADMIN Notice For RollTideFan

2005-07-13 Thread Charles
My sandbox list is *very* high traffic, about triple the traffic of this
list with HTML and many pictures. During the busy times it's nothing to
have several hundred megs of traffic inbound a day (not counting the
resending that the list does to each member). I tell you this because the
host for me is http://www.cmhe.net/ and they charge me $39 a month. It is a
mailman based list. If you want to talk requirements with their lead tech
contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] and address it to the attention of Bill. Tell him
I told you. For the most part there are no problems, but sometimes messages
are delayed, usually to a jam up on the server end. They usually respond
within 30 minutes to a problem. I don't know what you pay for this list, so
that may be more expensive than you want.

Importance: High

I've read the whining about the server. I've spent an assload of money on
different servers only to be kicked off without notice or reason (without a
refund), have shitty server performance, have my bandwidth requirements
throttled without notice, etc...

The list needs to reside on a server that uses CPanel software for domain
and
file maintenance because that is the format that we've always used. This
includes MailMan mail list software. All of out files are compatible with
this
format only. The server also has to allow lists to be created which, believe
it
or not, not all do. Some ignorant serve admins are so stupid that they set
up
the software wrong and get hammered by e-mails once a list is used. They
think I
am a spammer and jack me with no conversation. If the software is set up
correctly there are none of those issues.

What I am saying it that I have always tried to use the best server
available
within our requirements and financial limitations. Some are better than
others.

Now, since the vast, vast majority of people on this list only lurk (you
suck!)
then i can't see any reason we can't allow pictures to be posted. We need
only
GIF JPEG/JPG images and NO MOVIES (of ANY kind) or WAV/sound files until
we
see how this will work on out bandwidth.

As for HTML, knock your socks off until we see how it uses bandwidth.

I've asked for this before with almost no response, but here goes: If you
want a
more reliable server then find it. Use the requirements listed above plus it

needs to be a UNIX server. Let us know what you find. Also, if you want to
see
the message board resurrected, please volunteer to be the admin.

Fine. Go for it. I'll shut this one down.

BTW, that is NOT a server. It is a service. If this is what y'all want then
you

can have it. Hell, invite all the fuckin' redneck barners Phat Phil, too.

That didn't take long to find. Of course it'll be an hour or more
before anyone can read about it.

Do you want to type 150 or more e-mail addresses
into Google to get everyone signed up?

It ain't like I'm tied up selling Tupperware, or
anything. Sure, I'll do it.

Do you think that the majority of the membership will
even know how to sign up for Google, activate
the membership, and use another e-mail address to
 post, anyway?

All those with half a fuckin brain will. I don't really
give a rip about the tards. Maybe they won't find us.

while I use Google's search engine, I do NOT trust
 them in
  the least for anything else.

I ain't got nothing to hide.
