Cheer up Colin. Congrats to your anniversary and further 10 years to go.

When I read about new games, an old one came to my mind. So I had a
look at this:

and found out, there is another anniversary exactly today since this entry: 4 1/2 years of development with "Chrome". Is there any chance, to see it finished?

Greetings
Wolfgang

Ah yes, Chrome, well, that has been in development limbo since about early
2001. I had a mad programming spell in the summer of 2000 in which a lot of
work and planning was completed for it while I was unemployed at the time...
but then I got a job, and the battle for free time began! The early
reasearch for Chrome did begin way back in November 1997 ... straight away
after Stratosphere was finished! I've got all the early planning work safely
filed away and will make a nice behind the scenes development article
sometime.

As with everything, it always boils down to time and what other projects I
have on the go, and the list of things on the go is quite large at the
moment - ranging from some in the early initial planning stages up to some
nearing completion but Chrome was quite a challenge and it is something
I want to finish some day really.

But now, I am sitting here thinking back to that 5 year old code and
wondering that there is probably a better way to do now, and with the Mayhem
Accelerator I can go back and think about all the sacrifices for speed I had
to make, and see what sort of improvements could be done for the Doom-style
3d world would now be possible, of course... I have to get the Mayhem
Accelerator finished first.

But to answer your question, as Chrome is my own personal challenge, the
answer is 'yes', I would like to see Chrome finished. I don't want to waste
what work i've done on it but I can make no promises as to when full
programming would resume on it, or how long it would take.

The idea behind the Gremlin conversions which I want to do, is that it would
result in a couple of brand new games for the Sam without having the full
overhead of starting from scratch. With the games there are a lot of assets
are there - such as graphics, and the music to an extent (thanks to the
sterling efforts from David S-S for his SAA1099 renditions). Again, it's
just personal choice about the two games I chose - I think they will be
great on the Sam, and with a short but concentrated programming spell I
don't see the bulk of the coding work taking too long.

All the best,

Colin

Well, that talk of Chrome got me thinking, so i've just put up two
never-before-released animated screens of some of the early Chrome engine
work that date back from May / June 2000 onto my preview page at:

Hi Colin,

Congrats on your 10th anniversary and up to the next one !

Nice to see some more about Chrome and hope it sees the light of day
sometime as it would be a unique game to SAM.

For the scrolling bit planned for Harlequin. What kind of scrolling do you
have in mind (pixel, dixel , 8 directional?) and at what speed would your
accelerator run then ?

Harlequin requires 8 directional scrolling, and I would probably be looking
at pixel scrolling vertically, and double pixel scrolling horizontally. It's
really a case of tinkering to see what looks best when it's all moving, and
what you can get away with!

Speed wise, I am aiming for 20-24MHz, it's a 20MHz Z80 part, and if it likes
being overclocked to 24 then that would be really nice!
