Had a similar problem several weeks ago and it was a result of Samba
looking in the wrong directory for the secrets.tdb file.

I expect that the Mac OS X clients will still perform worse but not to
the same degree as when the data was hosted on Samba.

Thanks for your help everyone. For now, I think we are going to chalk
this one up to lots and lots of files in the shares and the somewhat
goofy way that the Finder handles directory listings.

to tweak something on the server? On the client? I've
search the Samba archives and not found much mention of this issue and
I've Googled around for information from Apple's end and drawn a blank
there too.

I have been having the same problem with what sounds like a very similar
setup. I attempted to find the root of the problem and, as near as I can
tell, there might be a bug winbindd's name cache. Unfortunately, I don't
have any answers for you.
