this is happening? I think it is a really
strange behaviour, since under old NT4, it worked.
Please help, we already lost a good bunch of data due to this problem
named above :(

I had the same problem on FreeBSD/amd64 with some old 16bit application.
I fixed it by adding the following to my smb.conf:
~ mangling method = hash2
~ mangling char = ~
~ mangle prefix = 6
This *should* result in names like DOCUME~1.DOC etc.

after looking through the man page of smb.conf, I've found another
interesting directive:
max smbd processes
This one has its value set to 0 by default, try setting it to a value
reasonable for your count of clients. I assume it has to be

/usr/sbin/smbd -D
