since I was bitten badly by this today, I take the additional time to
report this issue here.
After upgrading from samba 3.5.8 to 3.6.0rc3, Administrator on the xp
clients (yes, still xp sp3, no vista, no win7 clients here) lost its
admin privileges.

I would advise against using Samba 3.0.28a if you are using domain
trusts. I spent weeks trying to configure trusts with 3.0.28a and it
didn't work. I went back to samba 3.0.26a and it worked like a charm.

we configured a Samba server for filesharing. Samba use kerberos and winbind to
authenticate the user on DomainA.
In DomainA we create a localgroup where we add users from the same domain. But
also we add users from the DomainB who is trusted.
Our problem is that users from DomainB can't get
IMHO, for this to work you should define idmap domains = DOMAINA
DOMAINB and configure the idmap backend appropriately for both domains
using idmap config DOMAIN:backend/range/default etc...

that the nis.schema file contains, and a whole
lot more. removing nis.schema thus has no ill-efect, but removing the
rfc2307bis one makes ldap complain about missing attributes from
samba.schema. So nis goes. :-)

Running under debian, using SAMBA V3.0.7, I use
PASS=secretworld
USER=joe
(echo $PASS; echo $PASS) | smbpasswd -s -a $USER
Note:
smbpasswd requires a double typed in password, It took me a lot of minutes
to figure that difference between earlier version and the 3.0.7 out but now
it works.

they always saw their actual
quota on mounted shares (using w2k) but since 2.2.8 the share size is
equal the disk size.

hi, I have the same problem!
additionally sometimes the roaming profiles remain on the w2k
workstation. the latter problem could be eased by the following part of
the startup.bat
xcacls %USERPROFILE% /T /C /E /G %USERNAME%:FO /Y

/var/opt/samba: No such file or directory
Have I to generate the directory /var/opt/samba by myself or should
samba do that?

I just did something similar, and it seems to work well. I did need a DNS
server, and the key was to NOT have it on my gateway machine. I used
Mandrakes MNF as the gateway machine, and it's seems to work fairly slick.
It still took quite a bit of experimenting though. The instructions in the
