[Samba] samba storing filenames as utf8
samba 3.0.22 debian woody. linux charset: iso8859-15 windows charset iso8859-15 tested parameters: unix charset = ISO_8859-15 display charset = ISO_8859-15 unix charset = ISO-8859-15 unix charset = iso8859-15 unix charset = utf8 unix charset = UTF8 unix charset = LOCALE problem: files are seen in windows correct iso8859 named. if i look at the linux server, there are encrypted special characters in the filenames. (e.g. Entwürfe looks like EntwÃ1/4rfe) i've tested a long time and today i've tried to convert the filename: sv01samba:/# echo EntwÃ1/4rfe | iconv -f utf8 -t iso8859-15 Entwürfe in my view, it seems, that samba ignores the given unix charset parameter. -- -- greetings, kurt, austria. hello jeremy and jordan. autodesk announcing explicit, that samba is *not* supportet. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112id=2872551linkID=2475323 our costumers are using using AutoCAD from 2002-2007 on samba 2 + 3. IMHO, samba 2 may be a good choice for AutoCAD. for example, AutoCAD with samba3 has a problem with special chars in filenames. (ä,ö, will make no problems, ü causes AutoCAD to throw a file-not-found message.) printer: i can't remember, if there's already the parameter disable spoolss in samba 2. - but this may help. additional you can play with the ACAD-built spooler (preferences). sorry, if i interfere this thread, but that are my experiences. -- -- greetings, kurt, austria. I would rather expect that to happen on a Linux client, too (i.e., Linux client should not see it as symlinks, but as real files/directories). Where can I look for a solution? I didn't find anything about it in smbmount nor in smb.conf manuals. i hope, that smbfs (smbclient) recognizes the symbolic link and shows it as this what it is. because if i delete the link, the original directory will stay. AFAIK, the symlink stores the target as text. so, it's a difference to create the symlink with /etc/passwd and ../etc/passwd. e.g.: you create symlinks in /usr: cd /usr ln -s ../etc/passwd sympass1 ln -s /etc/passwd sympass2 cat sympass1: success cat sympass2: success now move the links to local: mv sympass* local/ cat sympass1: *fail* cat sympass2: success so, if you use relative path descriptions (e.g. ../unattended-write)to create the symlink, it will be a solution. maybe a hardlink will be a second solution. AFAIK: windows clients does not recognise symbolic links, so samba has to handle it as directory. advantage: global directory entries are handled correct. disadvantage: a deletion of the symbolic link will be fatal. -- -- greetings, kurt, austria. Now I can't mount the shared directories on the xp machine from the linux machine. In the smb4k window, when I double click the shared directories on the xp machine, the icon pops up on the right for a moment, then disappears. I had a wireless router, but I changed back to my regular broadband router and now I'm getting a username/password prompt when trying to access the linux machine from the xp machine. I tried uncommenting the guest user lines in smb.conf and this didn't help. I downloaded Ethereal yesterday and followed the directions step by step at samba.org and still can't get things to work right. I've googled time and time a gain, I've posted in the linux newsgroup, I'm about out of gas here. Do I need to just start over? Any help would be appreciated. Re: [Samba] Preventing deletion of folders under a SAMBA share
Stuart Callender: Thanks for the reply. I thought this too, but no matter what permissions I give for existing folders via Unix permissions (even tried sticky bits), or via the directory mask and force directory mode, the folders can still be deleted. the folder can be deleted if *the parent* folder has deletion rights. e.g. parent: 0555 parent/child: 0777 child cannot be deleted, all folders in child you can delete if you have *no* linux fs (ext2/ext3/a.s.o.) e.g. FAT, this will take no effect... :-( i hop it helped. Windows 2000 sees the folders as read only, but allows you to delete them. According to O'Rielly's Samba book (based on Samba 2), all should work fine, but it doesn't. I was wondering whether this is because of Windows 2000 allowing delete of Read Only files. As such I may have to perhaps set up a Windows 95/98 box just to see. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

(sh.. i know...) we had the same problems. for me it seems, that it's a w2k problem. especially therefore, that ms has corrected such failures in sp4. as far as we used samba 2.2.2 we used the switch NT ACL SUPPORT = no in smb.conf for the profile share to prevent us from this issue. in samba 2.2.8a all is running fine without this switch. but we've allready installed sp4 on *all* our w2k clients. files' ownership to Administrator does not help - I have to restart the machine completely. restarting the client helps? I was originally runnig samba 2.2.1a and tried upgrading to 2.2.3, 2.2.5 and this morning to 2.2.8a. I also upgraded from redhat 6 to 7 to 7.1 and last week to 8.0 but this does not make any difference. I've tried service pack 2 and 3 on the w2k boxes but to 4 - some of my software does not work when 4 is loaded. i've only checked this two configurations: samba 2.2.2 with 'NT ACL SUPPORT = no' on the profile share w2k sp2 and sp3 samba

Re: [Samba] Samba locking problem - is this a bug ?
Kostadin Galabov schrieb: Hi, I asked this once and no one seem to answer. So I'm trying once again: I have the following problem: I have a linux samba server and a lot of linux clients that connect to it. What I noticed is that if one of the clients create new file and starts do some operation on it - the file is unreadable for all other clients (output od smbstatus: DENY_FCB RDWR NONE) - which is OK I the type, how a file is opened, is decided by the programm, which is opening. suppose. But if the connection between the client and the server disappears while client is working on the newly created file, the file you mean breaks? stays locked and in some occasions even when the connection is established again the file stays locked, the client cannot access the mounted drive - and the client should be restarted. Which is strange I at this time samba does not know, that the client is death. - seems, that the client hangs. noticed that if a Windows client do the same operation - the file is at least readable for other clients. the other client may have read access to the file. - the broken client has a hangup in communication. I played a lot with the lock options and tried to remove the DENY_FCB - setting share modes = no but nothing helped - I have this problem. So please advice - how can I prevent this file locking when connection between master and client disappears ? For me this look like a bug. that's not really successfull. - my mention is, that your client has a big problem. - samba kills the locking after timeout, if the client is death. - in your case it seems, the client answers to a keep alive, but cannot access the network... - so samba keeps the locking. i cannot really help, without further information. so, if the problem exists again, try something like that first: - ping to the client - check, if u have access from the client to another client - check, if u have access from another client to the broken one - check ifconfig for error packages on server and client. From the client, I can map drives manually, access files, etc. all without errors. Re: [Samba] Windows XP Profiles
I would like profiles to be stored locally and automatically created when a new user logs in. So, if a roaming profiles are copied at login from the server to the client. at logout they will be copied back... if netconnection is broken, the client uses the temporary copy on itselves. if u want to use local profiles, so u have to change the profile type to local or turn off roaming. (as u did). if a user logs on first time (in the network when using roaming / on the client, when using not) - so windows creates the profile as copy of default user (at the client/ i did not try, what happens if u create default user on the server, but i think it will be functional...). - 4 details, please refer microsoft doc's. user has not logged into a particular computer before, a profile will be created (possibly from a template?) for them and will be stored locally. I have been able to turn off profile roaming by adding logon path = to the smb.conf file, but that will just allow the user to logon, not create an account on the local machine for them. if i did not misunderstand u (i'm austrian and not to fix in english) - i think u should turn *on* roaming... i hope i helped gk -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
