serial ports and SL4.4

2009-11-03 Thread WILLIAM J LUTTER
If I install SL4.4 on a laptop and then try to use the /dev/ttyS0 serial port, I find I can't control the ownership and permissions of the port. It resets from 0660 root uucp to root root and owner rw permissions. So, I can't add a user to the uucp group to manage usage of the serial port (thi

My apologies for having sent the email about a possible serial port UART issue. It was clear following more fiddling around with stty sane, cooked, and raw parameter groupings who the suspects were. Bill Lutter

serial port

2009-07-14 Thread WILLIAM J LUTTER
I don't do a lot of work with serial ports and I know this should be an obvious question. I've several linux boxes running SL4.7 or 5.0. I have a digitizer connecting to a serial port via RS232 cable with trivial settings (start bits 1, data bits 8, parity none, stop bit 1 with a variety of

Following a Feb 06 update of the sudo package to sudo.i386 1.6.9p17-3.el5_3.1 I find that its behavior has changed for my simple usage. The linux box runs SL5.1 (earliest SL5 as I remember). As a separate question, how do I easily deduce which SL version I am running? Back to sudo issue: I

My apologies for restarting this thread. I thought I replied Saturday privately and not to the list. For the sake of accuracy, let me copy and paste a few notes commenting in particular the path issue I had installing nvidia drivers on SL 4.2. 1. I installed from atprms repo (only time I use i

nvidia driver installation

2008-10-09 Thread WILLIAM J LUTTER
Several years ago, I've installed nvidia graphics drivers using their download files - which require reboots. I'd prefer to use rpm packages for this and was pleased to find for my system (SL4.1?) and kernel 2.6.9-55.0.2.EL, the legacy driver package (I have a GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X), nvi
