Can anyone point me at a version of vlc that works out of the box with SL 6x?
The versions I have tried so far all barf on not having the versions of
libraries that they want. I used to have it working under older SLs.

Thanks to Bonnie King , I think I have solved this problem
Here's the sequence that appears to have worked for me:
yum remove libmatroska
yum remove libebml
yum --enablerepo=epel install libebml-1.2.1-1.el6.i686
yum --enablerepo=epel install libmatroska-1.2.0-1.el6.i686

to install from a USB stick. I found neither of the
methods listed in the Scientific Linux website worked.
However, a read of parts of the script

I have a recently set up SL 7.2 using Gnome. Something very strange
happened while trying to use the mouse and now only root can log in
and get a sensible screen. All other users, including newly-created ones,
just get a dark screen and a restart. Here's the output from abrt-cli.

Having got SL 7.2 up on my new 2-in-1 I have some
interface queries. The first ones may relate to having
an HD screen in that the defaults may be fixed in pixels,
and hence too small on a screen with more pixels,
rather than the physical sizes.

I had been using the genealogy program gramps under
SL 6, but have not been able yet to find a version that
I can install in SL7. The problem seems to be dependencies,
in particular recent versions require bsddb3. Any help,
or pointers to good altenatives, would be welcome.

I have been using gthumb happily for a while. It has

This happens even when no argument is given on the command line.

My laptop is set up to dual boot Windows 10 and SL7. I had

Another issue is that Dropbox have announced that henceforth
they will only support ext4.

This certainly an interesting issue, but I have
been less pleased with SL than Keith is. The main
problems have come with software that is not in
SL's standard set, generally because SL does not
have the needed libraries or supporting packages.
For example I cannot currently use Dropbox under SL

Can anybody suggest a reason/cure?
