[scifinoir2] Similarities Between Virginia Tech Shooter Horror Film
Similarities Found Between Virginia Tech Shooter, Horror Film One self-portrait has an uncanny resemblance to a South Korea film By MICHAEL HINMAN Source: Washington Post Apr-20-2007 In what is sure to once again ignite the debate over how movies influence the terrible actions of others, some observers say the man responsible for killing more than 30 people at Virginia Tech earlier this week may have drawn some parallels with a popular South Korean horror movie. In photographs sent to NBC News by Cho Seung Hui just before the massacre took place, the man included several photos of himself with various poses with his guns. Also included, however, was a photo of himself holding a hammer in a stance that some say is similar to one used in publicity shots for Oldboy, the 2003 revenge thriller from Park Chan Wook, that was a major Cannes Film Festival winner in 2004. However, not everyone is convinced that films such as Oldboy should be targeted as accessories to the massacre, like Washington Post's Stephen Hunter. For one, 'Oldboy' wasn't a gun picture, Hunter said in his column. The only gun in it is a derringer that figures in the denouement. It's a movie about the bone-shattering force of hammers on limbs and skills, and the physical exhaustion of fighting. Its violence, though pervasive, is never beautiful or graceful. The violence is never idealized; you cannot look at it and be sduced by it. In the film, a man named Oh Dae-su is imprisoned in a strange apartment for nearly 15 years, never knowing who is captors were or why he was kidnapped in the first place. He goes through more than a decade of torture and isolation, and after his release, seeks revenge on the man who puts him there. The twist, however, is that the man he's trying to find also is seeking revenge on him. In his column, Hunter says that if any actions are going to be compared to films, than they need to be compared more to John Woo's work, including the film The Killer which features a character going down a corridor, knocking on doors, and when they're answered, the protagonist opens fire. How much do horror films influence real-life crime? Not as much as people might think, horror director Wes Craven told Australia's Melbourne Herald-Sun. If someone has violent thoughts, they're going to be attracted to things with violence in them, Craven said. But are those things making them have violent thoughts? I don't believe so. Horror films and violent films are not a cause of violence itself. Mayank Chhaya, a commentator for the Malaysian Sun didn't take a position one way or the other on whether horror films directly contribute to violence, but did talk about how much of an influence Oldboy may have had. It is highly likely that Cho knew of the film and probably emulated that scene to accentuate the impact of his own post-mortem, Chhaya said. In a series of videos ... Cho rants against perceived or real humiliations he faced, quite like the businessman Dae-su. From all available accounts, Cho seemed to be disturbingly in control of his faculties, carrying out the murders with extraordinary precision and finality. That too seemed reminiscent of the 'Oldboy' protagonist. Although it is always hard, if not impossible, to decide whether art reflects life or life absorbs art, in this particular case, the latter being the case does not appear to be too far fetched. Cho's body language in the footage released by NBC News suggests a fiendishly determined mind who has no doubt whatsoever that the world, or at any rate some people in it, has wronged him and he must avenge that. [scifinoir2] Stargate Series Return With Stagnate Ratings
Audiences for series are not growing By MICHAEL HINMAN Source: GateWorld Apr-19-2007 American audiences were excited to see the return of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis on SciFi Channel over the last few weeks, but they were virtually the same audience that tuned in for the first half of the two series' respective seasons. The mid-season premieres of SG-1 and Atlantis were practically on par with the finales that aired six months ago with SG-1 picking up a 1.5 rating and Atlantis earning a 1.4 rating, GateWorld reported. For SG-1, which is airing its final 10 episodes, that's a 0.2 ratings drop from the mid-season finale last September, but was consistent with last summer's average of 1.54. Atlantis' drop was virtually identical to its sister show, also dropping 0.2, and finishing slightly lower than its average last summer of a 1.58. Yahoo! My kinda woman! [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is OT, but I had to send this one. Mamma wasn't messing around! * Armed Miss America 1944 stops intruder Fri Apr 20, 8:16 PM ET Miss America 1944 has a talent that likely has never appeared on a beauty pageant stage: She fired a handgun to shoot out a vehicle's tires and stop an intruder. Venus Ramey, 82, confronted a man on her farm in south-central Kentucky last week after she saw her dog run into a storage building where thieves had previously made off with old farm equipment. Ramey said the man told her he would leave. I said, 'Oh, no you won't,' and I shot their tires so they couldn't leave, Ramey said. She had to balance on her walker as she pulled out a snub-nosed .38-caliber handgun. I didn't even think twice. I just went and did it, she said. If they'd even dared come close to me, they'd be 6 feet under by now. Ramey then flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911. Curtis Parrish of Ohio was charged with misdemeanor trespassing, Deputy Dan Gilliam said. The man's hometown wasn't immediately available. Three other people were questioned but were not arrested. After winning the pageant with her singing, dancing and comedic talents, Ramey sold war bonds and her picture was adorned on a B-17 that made missions over Germany in World War II, according to the Miss America Web site. Ramey lived in Cincinnati for several years and was instrumental in helping rejuvenate Over-the-Rhine historic buildings. She returned to Kentucky in 1990 to live on her farm. I'm trying to live a quiet, peaceful life and stay out of trouble, and all it is, is one thing after another, she said. Re: [scifinoir2] OT: Catholic Church buries limbo after centuries
One of my major beefs about organized religion is Man's tendnecy to define the Word of God as Man sees fit, as though the layperson doesn't have the common sense to do so. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Wow, this is really something. Sometimes--many times, in truth--I do understand why some of my friends are atheists or agnostics. It does seem that Man grafts so much of his own fears, needs, greed, etc.onto religious truth that such truth can be twisted all out of recognition. Limbo wasn't really belived in by most in the Catholic church, yet they had to get around to removing it from the literature? So many concepts of sin and morality seem to be based on the mores of the current times and political/social climates, not on a true connection to God. For example, I look back with chagrin remembering a time when I had to consciously get comfortable with the idea of female preachers. The church in which I was raised teaches the old time belief that men alone should be preachers, and as a kid, I didn't really question that too much. Of course, as my family will tell you, I basically question *everything* in life--with one notable exception being the existence of a God--so I got a round to the gender thing too. I had to look at history and realize the attitudes of the church were based on societal attitudes about women, just as the Mormons used to teach that we blacks weren't worthy of the same grace as whites, or how there have been times when churches would teach that long hair on men was improper, yet be okay worshipping a Jesus with same. I had to make myself get over that prejudice. So much of what we accept from organized religion needs to be examined closely. And times like these, so many who claim to follow God twist the truth to serve their own ends. A friend of mine likes to say that Jesus never meant to start a religion. I get that. I believe in God, but man, do people make it hard! Catholic Church buries limbo after centuries By Philip PullellaFri Apr 20, 2:21 PM ET The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went. In a long-awaited document, the Church's International Theological Commission said limbo reflected an unduly restrictive view of salvation. The 41-page document was published on Friday by Origins, the documentary service of the U.S.-based Catholic News Service, which is part of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Pope Benedict, himself a top theologian who before his election in 2005 expressed doubts about limbo, authorized the publication of the document, called The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptised. The verdict that limbo could now rest in peace had been expected for years. The document was seen as most likely the final word since limbo was never part of Church doctrine, even though it was taught to Catholics well into the 20th century. The conclusion of this study is that there are theological and liturgical reasons to hope that infants who die without baptism may be saved and brought into eternal happiness even if there is not an explicit teaching on this question found in revelation, it said. There are reasons to hope that God will save these infants precisely because it was not possible (to baptize them). The Church teaches that baptism removes original sin which stains all souls since the fall from grace in the Garden of Eden. NO NEGATION OF BAPTISM The document stressed that its conclusions should not be interpreted as questioning original sin or used to negate the necessity of baptism or delay the conferral of the sacrament. Limbo, which comes from the Latin word meaning border or edge, was considered by medieval theologians to be a state or place reserved for the unbaptized dead, including good people who lived before the coming of Christ. People find it increasingly difficult to accept that God is just and merciful if he excludes infants, who have no personal sins, from eternal happiness, whether they are Christian or non-Christian, the document said. It said the study was made all the more pressing because the number of nonbaptised infants has grown considerably, and therefore the reflection on the possibility of salvation for these infants has become urgent. The commission's conclusions had been widely expected. In writings before his election as Pope in 2005, the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger made it clear he believed the concept of limbo should be abandoned because it was only a theological hypothesis and never a defined truth of faith. In the Divine Comedy, Dante placed virtuous pagans and great classical philosophers, including Plato and Socrates, in limbo. The Catholic Church's official catechism, issued in 1992 after decades of work, dropped the mention of limbo. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

[scifinoir2] Miniatures Gaming and Miniorities
I've been toying with the idea of starting a gaming league targeted primarily (but not exclusive to) minorities. I would prefer to run Heavy Gear, but it is somewhat expensive. While I can appreciate the value of $40.00 boxed sets ($60.00 with for the starter sets), I would be the first to admit that it's a bit steep for someone who isn't into it. Of course that doesn't stop parents from spending $60.00 on the latest 360 or ps3 game, so maybe it's not as big of a deal as I think. It would probably be ideal do run some kind of alternate WWII game using Star Grunt II miniatures, as they are more reasonably priced, especially at the 15mm scale. The down side there is the fact that you have to order overseas and I don't know if I'm ready to become a distributor. Has anyone ever toyed with the idea of starting a gaming league? Were you able to I have no doubt that interest could be drummed up. I was going to run a Heavy Gear game at the church picnic last year and all the kids wanted to know what Heavy Gear was. If I did get a chance to run it, I'm sure that they could easily have gotten hooked. Of course, I could just build the armies and let the kids play using the minis provided. With our community being so sports centered, it would be nice to show our kids something that gets their imaginations going. On Friday, CBS Nightly News ran a story about a book that was written about Albert Einstein's life. The author of the book said that Einstein was a marginal student, but one of things that set him apart was his imagination. It would be nice to equip our kids with tools that encourage the expansion of their imagination. In my mind, gaming could be a great tool to use. Any thoughts, suggestions, or questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks --jason

Re: [scifinoir2] Universal Remaking Colossus : The Forbin Project
What you say about the trilogy, and Colossus coming back, reminds me of a series by scifi writer Jack Chalker, Rings of the Master. Ever read it? It takes place centuries in the future, in which the galaxy is ruled by a master computer. A group of diverse humans undertakes the mission of shutting down the computer, which can be done by finding five rings which are actually electronic circuits, then taking those rings to the computer's original control interface. The computer has grown to the point where it's literally expanded itself throughout the galaxy, but its core program--dating back to its initial programming--provides for an override sequence. The computer can't destroy the code, nor destroy the rings, but it does take license by hiding the rings and the location of its master control panel. A pretty good series, full of Chalker's signature strangeness of dealing with humans as basical biochemical machines, and his penchant for playing round with sexual identity and s uch. -- Original message -- From: Astromancer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well, you're right...we can only hope... There was another incident where he had one of the scientists who conspired to destroy him shot, decpitated and immmersed in a tak of water for several hours to ensure he was dead as well as satiate his curiosity about death...If they spent as much time on the psychology of the computer, I think it would come off more chilling than what we saw in the TV movie... It was *really* scary when Colossus merged with its Russian counterpart. And that ending, when they fitted him with a voice, and he says In time you and your children will come to love me, even as God. Wow! I hope Howard brings a deft touch and doesn't bury the theme in a bunch of overblown action and adventure. This isn't a film that needs to be a blockbuster, in my opinion. -- Original message -- From: Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor) Universal Remaking Colossus Universal and Imagine Entertainment will remake the 1970 SF drama Colossus: The Forbin Project, about a computer that takes over the world, as a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard, Variety reported. Brian Grazer will produce. Jason Rothenberg has been set to write the screenplay for the remake, which will be called simply Colossus. Based on a book by D.F. Jones, the original film was a forerunner of movies such as The Terminator, introducing the idea of a government-built computer that becomes sentient. Rothenberg will use the original's premise as a springboard and will incorporate two subsequent Colossus novels written by Jones to create a broader story. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM. Yahoo! [scifinoir2] Gaming Convention in Iraq
When President Bush ordered troops to Iraq, he probably never imagined that he would be ultimately be responsible for what very well could be the very first DD convention/game day ever held in a war zone. Ziggurat Con, being held June 9 from 1200 to 2100 hours at Camp Adder/Tallil Airbase, is open to all allied military personnel and civilian contractors in Iraq. KBR and MWR (the army's Morale Welfare Recreation Department) have graciously allowed service members to use part of the Community Activity Center to hold the Game Day. The Ping Pong room will be set up for RPGs (Role-Playing Games, not to be confused with the rocket propelled grenades which share the same acronym), and the DVD Movie room will be playing Anime Movies all day in support of the event. The largest problem with running a Con in Iraq, of course, is that there are no local stores or game publishers, and few game books on the post. Even dice are in short supply, with many soldiers breaking the unwritten taboo held by many gamers and sharing dice. Thankfully, many game publishers have also lent their support, and have agreed to supply game products to help the Con along. Aethereal FORGE, Sovereign Press, Final Redoubt Press, Goodman Games, Paizo Publishing and Steve Jackson Games are among those that have thrown in their support for the convention. SPC Amberson indicated that the soldiers could definitely use more. This convention is currently in drastic need of prizes and giveaways for the troops, he said. Everything donated will go directly to the troops, or to MWR to use as loaner books for the soldiers. For more information, contact SPC David Amberson at the following address: david.amberson (at) iraq.centcom.mil Donations can also be sent to SPC Amberson directly at the following address: SPC David Amberson A Co 86th Sig Bn APO, AE 09331 They're planning to run the following games (and will be happy to get additional games): Babylon 5 RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, DD, DD RPGA, GURPS, Historic Miniatures Battles, Magic Tournament, MechWarrior Miniatures, Rifts, Shadowrun, Starship Troopers, White Wolf System-Vampire, White Wolf System-Werewolf, XCrawl Got any game books crowding your shelves that you never use? Here's a great cause to donate them to. Spread the word. We would love anything we can get. We do have a White Wolf game here, but not much in the line of books, mostly the older editions. We will have a small LARP game that we are trying to get permission to have happen at the Ziggurat for which the con is named (A LARP at a historical site that has been around since Biblical times - WOW). Gamer related material would be absolutely awesome!! It takes 2 weeks or less when shipping Priority, so you still have time. My address is as follows: SPC David Amberson A Co 86th Sig Bn APO, AE 09331 Thank you so much for your support, Dave
