Quakers don't sing at meeting except in rare instances, nor do
we have hymns.
I think Philip meant the Shakers, not the Quakers (slight difference!).
Thanks Anselm. I was thinking Shakers too, but I thought Amazing Grace was
more mainstream than that. It was written by a former slave boat
I had
difficulty explaining to our host family the meaning of the title Amazing
Grace. I think I was right in saying it was an American quaker hymn or
was
that Lord of the Dance which was also played by our hosts in our honour!
Hi Philip,
As a Quaker for many years, I can guarantee you that
Hi Maggie,
The organizers of the Marie Currie March Against Cancer in Edinburgh last
summer are organizing another mass band march in NYC this April. In
Edinburgh the final count was 8,000+ pipers and drummers. I need to find
the web site to get more info. My understanding is that we will
On a more serious note, I've ordered small pipes in both D (for local
sessions with all the melodeon players) and in A (because many good fiddle
tunes and all GHB tunes are in A) - the set has interchangeable chanters.
After Philip's Border Gaithering I was hooked. Two more weeks to wait for
I thought it was a bit late for fugured bass. I just thought
that some folk were perhaps still in the habit of using this method.
This is probably true. Old habits die hard and I'm sure that everyone

Are you planning to add counterpoint to these melodies? Polyphonic or
monophonic? Is there any figured bass notation? By the late 1700's Alberti
bass was all the rage for piano scores.

There are about 10 tunes in all which have seconds or bass lines which

Hi all,
I just resubscribed to scots-l after getting a new
computer and new email address. It's nice to be back.
I am planning to compete on the pipes this summer
at various highland games here in the US and wondered if there are any pipers
who had adjudicated these before. I will be
And I wish I had a nickel for everytime someone has called me Mrs.
Thompson :-)

As a classical piano teacher, I teach my students to breathe at the end
of phrases and cadence points. It helps if they actually take a breath
at these places. When I play with my string partner, we also discuss
where the breathing spots are. It helps the music flow better IMHO.
