The High Reel? Nice tune which I haven't played for maybe 7 years
:-) Are you starting to play more Irish tunes Kate?
I'm not playing much of anything, but I'm starting to think about what
I would like to play when I get going again.

LOL.. That's cool.. I hope you feel better soon! I've working on
improvising over chord changes on the fiddle. Much easier to do that
type of thing on the guitar. Although it doesn't seem to be an issue
for Angus Grant on all those Shooglenifty recordings..

I've now read in two places that the Irish tune The High Reel is
descended from a Scottish tune by the name of Sandy Duff. However,
neither Sandy Duff nor Alexander Duff is listed in Charlie Gore's
index and I haven't been able to locate any reference to the tune in
a Scottish collection. Has anyone else seen it? I'm just curious.

Hi Kate. It's not in Gore because it's a pipe tune. Where have you read
about The High Reel? There seems little doubt on the evidence:

Thanks Nigel! That's so often the explanation when I can't find a tune
in Gore. I don't have very many pipe books, but I should have thought
to check the pipe indexes on line. It worked out for the better though
because now you've sent an ABC of it and I don't have to go bother my
friends with the pipe books! The last place I read about it was on one
of Grey Larsen's CDs, but he didn't list any source for Sandy Duff.

Due to its success with ordinary people it proved unpopular with critics.
