However... some small towns have a lot of social problems and some of these
places would need a bit of care, particularly if you have kids and are
concerned about schools etc.

	What sort of social problems??

Same as in the Borders - lovely towns, sod all to do for kids, not a lot
for young adults, and mainly drinking for everyone else. Anyone
intelligent enough to need a college education usually has to leave town
to get it, and not many return early in life (plenty come back, or move
in, in later years).

Come to think of it, same problems as most of rural Scotland, rural
Wales, rural England, rural Ireland...

NB: on the Buckfast topic - someone has left an 80 per cent finished
bottle of Buckie opposite my back door. Abandoned midway down a 100 yard
lane. Says it all, about Buckfast, and about small towns!

[scots-l] Folk in Angus

2003-06-03 Thread Manuel Waldesco

Hi everyone,

We're moving somewhere in Scotland in a couple of
months, and recent considerations have been Angus towns, mainly Brechin,
Arbroath and Kirriemuir; Does anybody knows anything about these towns? How's
the Trad Arts scene? We were in Brechin last weekend and the scenery was
gorgeous, but I don't know about music there, I haven't found much information;
Kirriemuir, on the contrary, seems tohave a buoyant trad music activity,
well, I don't know, any enlightning thoughts out there?

Cheers,

Angus is beautiful, and rural rather than remote. There is a lot of music
scattered through its glens. Kirrie seems to be the current session hot
spot, but don't forget that Dundee and surrounds are not far away.
Contact Christine Kydd as Dave suggests.

and a brick arrived through a window at one point in the evening.
