It isn't the fact that you need a real synthetic in a trans, the thing
doesn't get hot enough folks. I run 10-30 syntec, which is a fake synthetic
BUT the additives are why I use it. In stead of real syn oil they add slick
additives to it, this stuff loves transmitions. Do I run the stuff in the
engine? Nope I run only Delo 400 for brake in and Royal Purple after that.

So who makes a 100% synthetic oil?
When did Mobile 1 change?

A few years ago they announced a new formula and raised the price. The
story is that when they lost the lawsuit against Castrol for labelling an
oil that uses group III base a synthetic, Mobil 1 switched from a group
IV base down to a group III as well. I still have some old stock of M1,
but once that's gone I plan to switch to RP. They cost the same, retail.

The only synthetic i'll use is RedLine.
20k service limit for oils and 100k+ for gear lubes

Re: SD A555 Lubrication??

2007-08-23 Thread Rich Bryant
Either way Mobil1 is much more slippery than conventional 5w30 and that is
the underlying problem with using it in a tranny and why it should be
avoided.

Whether they want to start with dinojuice and make it into their highly
refined basestock or start at the lab ultimately it doesn't matter much
since they end up with pretty much the same chemical properties.

It is always about cheaper in this world. If the petroleum base gets
expensive they will switch back to the true syntehtic one...

Re: SD A555 Lubrication??

2007-08-23 Thread Paul T. Standaert
5w30 conventional valvoline engine oil has given me
the best performance in the 523/543/568 transmissions.
One thing I noted is that if you have old fluid in
your transmission (many turbododge people probably
have ORIGINAL fluid!) try changing it. It does make a
difference.

Funny how I read old automobile magazines from the
early 90's and they complain about my Daytona's
shifter not being up to snuff. Sorry, but these
things shift better, more accurately than any
comparable car of that era.

15 years, 148,000 miles, zero synchro grindage, no
sloppy shifter, never am I not positive on what gear I
just got done shifting into. Just some inexpensive
rubber bushings in need of replacement.

Re: SD A555 Lubrication??

2007-08-22 Thread Russ W. Knize
This is an area of some debate, but the general consensus is to stick with
5w-30 dino juice or Redline MTL. M1 caused slightly reduced shifting
performance for me, but since M1 is no longer a true synthetic anyway, it
probably doesn't matter.

The car is an 88' Shelby Z with a A555. What is the recommended
lubrication for this transmission. I used to use 5w-30 in all of my
previous Chrysler 5-speeds, and I'm wondering if that has changed as this
is my first A555. If motor oil is the recommended lubricant, would Mobil
1 synthetic be the best choice?

   Thanks in advance any info.
