Unwilling to give up on java_on_gentoo_sparc, I downloaded a j2sdk from
here:ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/JDK-1.3.1/sparc/FCS-02b/
After fooling around with the java-config scripts and renaming the
paths, I have j2sdk1.3.1 fully functional on the sparc.

As far as I know the jdk-1.4.x packages don't work, so I installed the
1.3.10 package. javac works fine now.
