Unfortunately, we haven't prepared for any sort of class this

Next Tuesday, we are planning a class to familiarize new GNU/Linux
users with GNOME and KDE. This is to point out where to go looking to
get stuff done. It is designed to solve the problem "I don't know how
to do anything with it." We'll go over basics of what the desktops

Seems like last meeting I went to was at Spider House at the end of the
spring semester. I think there was only 5-6 of us there. I would be up
for another at the beginning of the fall.
As far as WMs, I still use KDE2.2 for everything except my laptop, on
which I use KDE3, or enlightenment when
I've sold back to Gnome 2.0 w/ Metacity. It seems faster than KDE 3.0
and less complicated by default :) Now if I can just find a solution to
my usual GTK whine - WHY ARE MENUS PADDED SO TALL?
ok, done venting. It bothers me that we need so much resolution for
GUIs. I'd love to be using a be3
KDE 3 here, when doing desktop-ish stuff like web browsing. It looks
nice enough, although I think its much better with the menus stripped
down to only 3 or 4 options.
Is it just me or is anyone else annoyed by the gazillion K* apps that
ship with KDE?
I wonder if there is a way to get a sim
last 'physical' meeting i heard about was at around the end of the spring
semester.
it'd be nice to have one right around when school starts.
(p.s. what wm do you people use? lately i've been switching between kde3 and
fluxbox, still unhappy with both and not liking gnome2 anymore)

LOL, I usually just troll this mailing list, but this cracked me up!

Dr Chase said you are starting at UIUC in the fall, as am I. Have you
visited the campus? Are you a TA or RA? Have you put thought into
housing?
I have a TA position and am trying to find a room in a coop.
I don't have any finals, but will busy on the 10th, 13th, and 14th.
On Tue, May 07, 2002
Actually, those of you who are interested, email me privately with which
nights you have finals and which nights you don't, and I'll try to find a
mutually-compatible time.

Would anyone be interested in an informal siglinux meeting sometime before
finals? Maybe Wednesday evening? (I can't make Tuesday evening.) Something
at Spiderhouse or Mojo's would work well for our underage members.

Sorcer is definitely worth the time and effort to get going. I don't know if
it is the optimized binaries, or just the minimalism of the system, but what
has impressed me the most is the responsiveness of KdE, which always felt
sluggish in Mandrake. The other great part is the super quick boot
