A lot of people on this list are acquainted with Atul Chitnis. Many of us
got to know him in the Open Source scene in India in the late '90s and
early '00s.
I just heard that he lost his long battle with cancer earlier today.
He was not universally liked but I guess even those that didn't like

I got to know him over the past two years... no conflicts, so I have
very fond memories of him. He came across as a real gentleman to me,
in the best sense of the word. It's remarkable how he handled his
illness. I wish he didn't have to go so soon and had suffered less.
I'll miss him.

Not being in IT or in Linux or in FOSS, I too got to know him more

least one wildlife photographer.) I got to know him better after he'd

I'd been chatting with Atul every few days throughout the many months of this
his last battle, and I found him both indomitable and yet realistic about his
chances. He was also incredibly humbled (not something I expected) by the
financial and emotional support he was receiving.

Is rote arithmetic what you got from the story? Because I got mathematics.
And that's my problem - suicidal technician notwithstanding. I don't have

Whatever his personality, Atul was one of the guys who gave an impetus to
the FOSS movement in India. For years, FOSS.IN was the event to attend. RIP
