I recently built a new (second hand) pc for the missus with Ubuntu 9.04, I
had to replace the mouse as it was a woeful ball mouse, so I picked up a
cheap Laser brand USB keyboard and mouse (

Obvious question but
Have you tried a different mouse? maybe cheap=dodgy? Did the woeful ball mouse
work properly?
I can't remember the last time I had ANY mouse that didn't work unless it was
actually faulty hardware.

Yeah the old mouse did work except for the standard difficulties of using a
ball mouse, and you are right it could just be dodgy hardware, I will test
it with another system and see if it works. I just thought someone may have
used this mouse before.
