Hi All,
The problem seems to have righted itself after the latest updates from
Ubuntu.
Thanks to all those who replied. I now know a whole lot more about cups.

Thanks for the info. I have discovered that just downloading the
required plugin each time I start the computer solves the problem

period. It seems OK but still no printout without starting from scratch
again.
The standard CUPS logs are useless for troubleshooting. Try turning on
