In the RES heyday, many RES planes didn't use shark's teeth. They used a piece of rubber with a rough surface as a skid. Some used pieces of car mat others used the tread from an R/C knobby tire. Here is a safe (although I too, have wondered about the real incidence of injuries from skegs)
