Perhaps the same problem as in this thread (and some others):
 http://lists.soekris.com/pipermail/soekris-tech/2014-December/019350.html

I was one of those who reported similar problem on the list autumn
2013. I bought my original board october 2011 (one of those with a
small black heatsink) and two years later it wouldn't boot anymore. It
ended with me returning the board and I got a new one (one with a
larger heatsink) without further problem. However I got no explanation
to the nature of the problem. As far as I can tell from this list
those who ran into the same problem seems to have had a board from
these early batches. They have all returned their board and got a new
one from Soekris, but no explanation given.
Do you have one of these early boards with the small heatsink? I think
maybe they must have had a problem with some of these batches. I don't
think I've seen any report on similar problems with any of the newer
boards (larger heatsink type) yet, does this hold true...?

I use the same power supply with the new board as with the old. The
new board works fine. With the old I also tried some other power
supplies. Same result. Whatever problem I encountered then I am
inclined to believe had nothing to do with the power supply.

Some other member on this list posted recently about a similar
problem. He had been able to start the machine via uManager (entering
+++ on keyboard). I never tried this with the problematic board. Maybe
worth looking into...?

This question comes up often. Its usually the power supply.

2013-10-30 Thread Eivind Eide
After consulting with Soekris Europe I sent the board back to them.
Package got stuck in danish customs for quite some time for reasons I
still don't understand, but eventually this was solved and the package
got to it's destination.
The reply fron Soekris Europe was that they had not found any fault on
my board, but since I had throughly tested it they would replace it
with a new board anyway. Couple of days later I have the new board and
it just works fine. So I still have no explanation on what happened,
but my Soekris is back doing it's job

This is not good, as I'm planning to build a whole private e-mail

Could you guys update the thread if you hear back from them regarding this?

We've had exactly the same problem a few months ago : suddenly, a
6501-50 utterly failed to start. Changint power supply didnot solve the
 problem.

We replaced the motherboard with a new one (everything was under
warranty). The failed board was sent back to the seller, we asked for
some kind of feedback (to know if we should be wary of this kind of
failures, since we bought several 6501) but got none up to now.

[Soekris] net6501 won't start anymore

2013-09-18 Thread Eivind Eide
Sorry list. It seems a redesigned gmail webmail had found yet
another way too fool me into sending email as HTML. I hope that I now
found the right button to send as plain text. So I do the boring task
of resending the orignal message, hopefully as plain text this time:

I purchased a net 6501-30 autumn 2011 from Soekris Europe. It's been
working nicely for me after bios with usb boot code was in place.
I'm running ComBIOS 1.41c and boot OpenBSD from a low profile USB stick.

However this is not a boot problem, it's a board start problem.
Some time ago, after power recycling, which always went well before, the
box didn't boot up and only the green power led and the red error led
was lit. I then tried to press the reset button and the box continued to
boot as normally. Because of occasional need for power cycling this
happened a couple more times, then the other day after power cycling it
wouldn't start anymore at all. And now pressing the reset button does
nothing, except the four interface leds flash a fragment of a moment,
and then back to only green power led and red error led lit.

It stops before ComBIOS, there are no output to the serial console
whatsoever (and I have had no problems getting the serial console to
work before, so that's not it). So no disk problem or such, the box
don't even get to POST.

2013/9/18 Ryan McIntosh rmcint...@nitemare.net:
Try a different power supply first, they generally take a beating, followed
by removing any peripherals (drives and cards) to see of you can get it to
post. If you can't get anything after that then someone here can probably
run you through further diagnostics if there's anything else that can be
done before talking to soekris about a broken board.
