I know a few third party developers, and it's tough for them to make money in the VFX industry. Providing a way for them to target multiple DCC applications is a good way to help them succeed, which ultimately leads to them building new plugins. One of the major benefits is customizability, relaying functionality into other DCCs. If you don't like it don't think about Maya, but for example running emPolygonizer directly in Arnold for example is huge. Being able to design the pipeline for geometry generation with a portable system makes
