I >would suggest to download/upload files with both access (speedtouch and >router) to see if that really makes a difference. Yes, in this case the line speed and the ISP speed are actually different. The ISP has downloads capped at 640kb/s, and with both the Actiontect (1536kb/s) and the Speedtouch (1024kb/s) my downloads run at about 68kB/s according to apt-get and rsync. However, the ISP seems to have neglected to cap uploads, so with the Actiontec (896kb/s) my uploads run at 85kB/s, but with the Speedtouch (640kb/s) I only get 70kB/s according to rsync. All uploads and downloads are to machines I control at the ISP (my university), so the effect of Internet conditions and machine load are negligible I want my 10-15kB/s in upload back, but my main concern is that at some point the ISP will remove the 640kb/s cap and let me have the full 1.5Mb/s that the phone companies' DSL allows, and I would like to be ready for that when it happens. Are there any options I can set to tune the Speedtouch to try to get the line speed up to its full capacity? [speedtouch] Re: my .config
I found out that the .config located in usr/src/linux as it comes from a fresh install of Slackware is NOT the same .config that would be used to build the kernel that is actually installed. So for the moment forget my problems in recompiling the kernel to include atm support etc. As soon as I get a meaningful .config, if I still have problems in recompiling the kernel and/or install Speedtouch, I will come back. However, there are still a couple of things that I need to know. 1) It is quite annoying that I can do "make dep", "make clean", "make bzImage" and "make modules" without getting any error, and then when I do "make modules_install", it gives me errors due to dependencies, and the modules installation process gets interrupted at half, resulting in a total mess and in a shitload of error messages at successive boots. Isn't there a way to check for dependency problems BEFORE I start installing the modules?? 2) The question that I posted in a previous message remains valid: "" Then I tried as follows: I made a backup of my .config, I did "make mrproper", then I restored my .config and I tried to restart from "make dep" etc. But when I did "make dep" I got the following output and errors: gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -o scripts/mkdep scripts/mkdep.c make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/arch/i386/boot' make[1]: Nothing to be done for `dep'. make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/arch/i386/boot' rm -f .depend .hdepend make _sfdep_kernel _sfdep_drivers _sfdep_mm _sfdep_fs _sfdep_net _sfdep_ipc _sfdep_lib _sfdep_crypto _sfdep_arch/i386/kernel _sfdep_arch/i386/mm _sfdep_arch/i386/lib _sfdep_arch/i386/math-emu _FASTDEP_ALL_SUB_DIRS="kernel drivers mm fs net ipc lib crypto arch/i386/kernel arch/i386/mm arch/i386/lib arch/i386/math-emu" make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22' make -C kernel fastdep make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/kernel' make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/include/linux/autoconf.h', needed by `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/include/linux/modules/signal.ver'. It seems to me that there's something else missing. After a "make mrproper", is there something else that needs to be done besides copying a ".config" file into /usr/src/linux? 3) Did I say "a couple of things"? Well, there is a third one. Suppose that I have a correctly built and installed kernel running and that I have the ".config" corresponding to its configuration. Now I change the .config by changing some "not set" into M and/or some M into "not set" but without adding nor removing any Y. In this case do I have to rebuild and install the kernel as well, or is it sufficient to rebuild and install the modules ("make modules" and "make modules_install") without copying the kernel image to /boot/., the system map, etcetera etcetera? [speedtouch] Speedtouch 330 Rev 400 + Linux 2.6.4
Hi, I've been trying to get my Silver Speedtouch USB 330 rev 4.00 working on a machine running Debian Sarge and a custom 2.6.4 kernel. I have tried to use both the kernel driver and the user space driver and gone through the list archives trying to solve my problem to no avail... I've tried to use the speedtch module available in the 2.6.4 tree, but couldn't get anywhere. I've also checked out the CVS version of the kernel space driver, built it, loaded it fine, tried using modem_run (specifying alcaudsl.sys, firmware I got from the CD which accompanied the modem), but I still have the same problem as before, I keep getting the same output: cat /proc/net/atm/speedtch\:0 Speed Touch 330 (usb-:00:07.2-2) MAC: 00:90:d0:c7:ef:57 AAL5: tx 0 ( 0 err ), rx 0 ( 0 err, 0 drop ) Line state unknown, no firmware /var/log/syslog tells me: Mar 30 13:12:13 gonzo modem_run[7633]: modem_run version 1.2 started by conall uid 0 Mar 30 13:12:15 gonzo modem_run[7633]: Unable to locate firmware in /usr/src/firmware/alcaudsl.sys I have also tried the user space driver, both by installing the speedtouch-1.2 deb package I found digging around the files section in SourceForge and via the speedtouchconf script which just automates the process. I've tried loading the firmware a number of ways, specifying alcaudsl.sys, a concatonated version of ZZZLP1.eni and ZZZLP2.eni and using the -a flag of modem_run to specify both ZZZLP1.eni and ZZZLP2.eni. When I try either of the methods involving ZZZLP1.eni and ZZZLP2.eni, I get these errors in my /var/log/syslog: Mar 30 13:13:07 gonzo modem_run[7868]: modem_run version 1.2 started by conall uid 0 Mar 30 13:13:10 gonzo kernel: usb 1-2: bulk timeout on ep5in Mar 30 13:13:10 gonzo kernel: usbfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 2 ep 0x85 len 512 ret -110 Mar 30 13:13:12 gonzo kernel: usb 1-2: bulk timeout on ep5out Mar 30 13:13:12 gonzo kernel: usbfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 2 ep 0x5 len 935 ret -110 Mar 30 13:13:12 gonzo modem_run[7868]: BLOCK1 While this is appearing im my syslog, modem_run isn't terminating until I kill it using ^C manually, then the errors stop appearing in the syslog. Has anyone got any ideas how I can get either the kernel space or the user space driver working? -- Conall O'Brien +353 (0)87 9194139 | http://www.conall.net GPG Key: http://www.conall.net/gpg/ "C++ : Where friends have access to your private members." - Gavin Russell Baker. -- Attached file included as plaintext by Listar -- -- File: signature.asc -- Desc: Digital signature -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAaWrpVg0IYe59x04RAtiiAKCzYkjrM+P0QWQdXORB32xnIN6J6gCeMviu AD3C76OBQJC5ZbzbbyQNx/w= =ekvU -END PGP SIGNATURE- Liste de diffusion modem ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB Pour se désinscrire : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The line speed is not related to the modem in any case. Its a parameter sent by your line provider (which can be different from your ISP). I would suggest to download/upload files with both access (speedtouch and router) to see if that really makes a difference.
