Hi!
I had a speedtouch working with ubuntu edgy (and in Portugal too) until
recently, when I got a Sagem 1200 router off ebay. The speedtouch works fine,
even though the sagem seems to allow faster throughput. What I did was
basically what you have on the howtos you linked, you might want to try
executing the instructions in the script by hand first just to check if it
might be a timing problem.

[speedtouch] fedora 4 connection problem

Not sure if I'm on the mailing list yet but I'll trying to send this.

I'm having trouble connecting with a speedtouch 330 on fedora 4. I installed 
the firmware re your page instructions and all seemed to go ok. When I pppd I 
get -

Plugin PPPoATM.so loaded
PPPoATM plugin_init
PPPoATM setdevname-PPPoATM - SUCCESS: 0.38
Connect(0.38): Resouce temporarily unavailable

Any ideas please

Try the latest kernel driver (kernel 2.6.19): it should synchronize
at a higher speed.

What does it means?
What do you suggest me to do now?

I also considered the problem might me that i have an AMD64 processor and
