Subject: [Speedtouch 330 rev4] Please Martin can you help me a little?
Date: Wednesday 14 April 2004 19:25
From: Jérôme Staal [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: martin [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear Martin,
I hope you won't flame me to ask some help on this mighty/f...king ADSL modem
-_^ I am an average new user of Linux, I choose a Mandrake 9.2 distribution,
whose kernel version (adapted by Mandrake) is 2.4.22-based. My ADSL modem is
the Speedtouch 330 (silver color; rev4 verified w/ usbview utility) from
 Alcatel/Thomson.

I installed again a fresh new distribution, and I took the time to configure
the modem at post-install step: I didn't choose the PPPoE protocole because
I guess it is a PPPoA one. As there was no explicit choice for it, I choose
the most explicit option, named Speedtouch ADSL modem (or something near
this). I also configured my 10/100 Ethernet card, even if I do not use it. A
eth0 interface was created at this purpose.

Once the installation finished, I log in, run DrakConfig and get a view of
the physical devices section (material). I see my modem in the list but
when I select it and then display in the right panel the related
information, I see that the module slot says unknown... while I strictly
did the install of GPL 'user-side' drivers of B.Papillaud as described in
the How-To. -- Does it means there are still no drivers for the modem

As my kernel is 2.4.22-based, I did *not* patch the HDLC and I did *not*
compile any new configured kernel. I checked the USB interface: usb-uhci (in
graphic detailed load mode, Mandrake show me its initialization) pppd
 version is 2.4.1

I downloaded the new firmware (is it the same thing as 'microcode' ??) named
ZZZLP2.eni (I also found it on my Windows partition) and put it with the
 compiled and installed binaries (modem_run, pppoa3, pppoa2) i.e.
 /usr/(local/)sbin/ directory.

Finally I edited the 5 configuration files, and runned the modprobe and other
instructions at the command-line. The mount -t usbdevfs (...) line got me a
message explaining the mount was already done. Good. During the whole thing
the modem was plugged in, the two LEDs were immediately and constantly
*green*. I go to the directory containing the firmware ZZ*.eni and launch:
 modem_run -m -f ZZLP2.eni, the console spend a little less then a minute
to hang on and get me the invite back. LED have still not changed. I finish
w/ pppd call adsl and... LEDs still don't change.
ifconfig give me a report for interfaces: -lo, -eth0 and something
POINT-TO-POINT ifconfig ppp0 tell me that the modem was not found where info
 was searched on the interface...

How can I get some help to understand what I did wrong or, better, how can I
produce the info that will allow me to get helped? I cannot say it in
another manner: I am completely lost with this modem. I read a lot of
tutorials, read Usenet and Web boards, subscribed to mailing-lists but
nothing/nobody seems to be able to tell me: look: you did this, and this
produced this error. I am ready to check anything necessary to get this
damned modem working and to be able to clearly explain and understand my
 problems.

A big big thank to you if you take the time to read and answer :)
Jerome Staal

Got the tarball. The problem appears to be some spaces at the end of

Sent by whom? Who is the creator of that patch? Does that patch patch
cleanly for you (patch -p 0 modem_run.diff)? Maybe the offending
spaces have been deleted from CVS, in which case I am mistaken.

The patch is perfectly clean for me.

Either way, to finish this now, I'll upload your patch.

As config.log reports, you're missing `as', which is the GNU assembler.

330? If so did you add it to CVS? If not, how do you expect to merge it?
 An extra command line switch?

 Bye,
 Leonard.

No, it wont work with any 330 before the Rev 0400, which is what I explicitly
stated on the page, and one of the reasons why it _isn't_ committed to CVS.

A command line switch would be possible, though the thread help needed with
testing auto-detect Rev patch is working on automatic detection -- the
better option.

If this happens, the ARM bytes from the patch on the site above can be merged
with theirs, and finally merged with CVS.

   timed_out=0;   /// - Add this istruction

and not the one suggested by Danilo

   timed_out=1;   /// - Add this istruction

since the next line checks the value of the timed_out variable and if it's
not zero it prints an error messages, otherwise prints the ADSL line state,
as you can see in the following two lines extracted from my

Jan 28 11:33:07 maka modem_run[1651]: ADSL synchronization has been
 obtained Jan 28 11:33:07 maka modem_run[1651]: ADSL line is up (800 kbit/s

Sorry highlighted the wrong bit of code should have been 0x0c.

I am unsure how to do what you are suggesting.

 Any suggestions?

Gar, I thought it was quiet - I hadn't got any email all day. It's all good
now, it must have got jammed up somewhere.

Right, I understand what he's asking. I'll take a look at extract.c later and
see if I can change those hex values to find the start and end points.
Perhaps soon we'll have to have a `./configure --with-rev4=yes` :).

I'll let you know.

Dear Mike,

Yeah, I've had to run the modem on a Win98 box and use ICS for the routing
since I got mine.

I think it's obvious Alactel aren't aware of this - probably a screw-up
somewhere along the line as I did actually give their tech-support a ring
yesterday. The dialog went something like:

operating systems such as GNU/Linux and *BSD and any possible changes
to the firmware on the newer revisions of the 330 modem. /Me

Change of plan, ICS causes the resources on my laptop to be unusuable. Could
you upload the log file, or send it to me please?

I'm planning on taking a look at the ZZxx2.eni firmware for the REV400 soon

When did you purchase your REV400? Is it just be released onto the market?

 Ok O.

In the meantime I received a ZZZLP2.eni-file (twice) and an
 unknown KQD6P2.eni (thanx guys!).

The ZZZLP2 does not want to be loaded, probably because of
modem-run not finding correct startend points inside it.

The KQD6P2-file is funny though: I already had one file by that
name, but it was smaller (677641 bytes) that this one (761389). The
smaller one can be found at the Thomson site. My question now is:
where does the big one come from? Or is there some typo going on?
(They both work, by the way).

Any one to help me out?

Well,

Martin,

Yes I am another troublesome user, I bought this modem recently and spent the
last two weeks on and off trying to get it working on RH9, Fedora1 and Suse
8.2 and on several different PC's to no avail and hence my conclusion.

I have tried the latest drivers from the Thomson site but not the rev 3.0
version driver yet. I did though notice in one place a comment and syslog
file from someone who had the mgmt.o on his install disc with the Ver 4.0
modem and he was able to upload it. This was a French install disc I believe
but this file is not my Uk install disc. Will endeavour tommorrow to find
this person and ask for a copy.

Thanks for the reply

Mike

No, your line type is one of :
 - a classical analogic line (pots: plain old telephon system) and use ADSL
 ANSI/G.dtm annex A
 - a numeric line (isdn: integrated services numeric line) and use ADSL
 ANSI/G.dtm annex B ( and UR2 for Germany).
Over this line, depending of your ISP, you should use one or various
 protocols (PPPoA/PPPoE, routed_IP, bridged_IP)

Under the windows diagnostic program, you will see your modem type under
ADSL pots/rnis (mine is french rnis=isdn)

Maybe there is an unsupported change in this new firmware in the manner the
firmware is encapsulated in the file.
In this V3.0 driver, it is visible that the firmware is no more inside of
alcaudsl.sys (the file is too small) but in KDxx2.eni../ZZxx2.eni.

Does your REV400 work under windows?

Did you try with speedmgmt instead of modem_run?

I apoligise, my line type is POSTS in Gdmt.A mode.

Well, I was beginning to think they have made a change internally somewhere.

Do you think there's going to be much luck until one of the developers comes
across one?

And yes, I have tried speedmgmt. That didn't work either.

Right, my problem is EXACTLY that. It works perfect in Win98 and I'm even
running ICS for my home network for the night just until I can get back to
regular NAT.

You sound like you're using the kernel space drivers. I have tried them as
well as the user space, both without any luck. The lights are the same here
too, both green -- the firmware is never uploaded so the ADSL light never
flashes like it's suppose to.

As for kernel compilation it should only be nesscary if your distribution
kernel hasn't got the required pppoa/n_hdlc and speedtch modules included. As
far I know the speedtch driver was included in 2.4.23, so pressuming you're
running a recent distribution kernel (from Mandrake, or SuSE for instance) it
should be fine.

I wasn't aware you needed BOTH mgmt.o and alcudsl.sys. From my past
experience, it's an either or situation. For arguments sakes however:

http://download.ethomson.com/download/speedmgmt.tar.gz

is the package which builds mgmt.o.

My question about colour was simple. Two days ago my red Speedtouch 330
failed. I was told it was a reconised fault and given a new one on warrenty.
Today it arrived, but it was silver. I plugged it in just as my previous one
was and logically it should all start up fine -- seeing as they're the same
product. That wasn't the case and as I am seeing now it's proving impossible
to load the firmware from any of the free [libre] drivers. It just makes me
wonder if they maybe have made slightest modification to the silver modems
causing the drivers not to work. That's just a cloud in the sky though.

This is a problem caused by Alactel -- that is for sure. If they were to
document their hardware specifications and release the source code for their
firmware I can assure them they'd get a much great response for their
products. It's the way forward, they just need to embrace it.

I'll keep hunting for a solution, and I hope you do too. We really need one of
the developers to confirm one of our theories in order to make real progress.

Talk to you later,
Martin

Mine's silver but works ok under XP. Ironically, due to operateor
 malfunction,
I now don't have XP installed and I decided not to hunt out my XP disks and
merely go full blown Linux to see how I coped. I'm not convinced the
 colour has
 anything to do with it.

You'll understand the ironically fairly soon.

I have downloaded speedbundle 1.00 and read the README docuementation at
 the
top of the code tree which says do 'make' and then do 'make install'. Read
error messages and plug in modem to connect.

So i did 'make' and I read and acted on the error messages, and I did
 'make install'
which got me to where I was earlier on - expecting to be able to access
 the interenet
via my ADSL account. I poked around with ifcfg-dsl0 and .wvdialrc
with no avail. Apart from messing up my dial up connection for a bit
 which really
 caused me some worries.

I even tried rebooting. Oh and disconnecting and reconnecting the modem,
(which resolutely stays green all the time on both ADSL and USB channels).
It did all the flickering as described in the faq when I first connected
 it under XP.

I toodled around the speedbundle tree. The HOWTO is meant to be in there
 somewhere.
and that is what I was looking for. I found it in
 firmware_loader/doc-linux/
If you look in that directory there is an awful lot more info including a
 howto
 in 5 European languages.

WHat I was able to gather, from the HOWTO is that the files mgmt.o and
 alcaudsl.sys
are *required* to get the modem going.

I haven't yet successfully located the mgmt.o file and would love to know
 where it is.

The alcaudsl.sys file is a Windows system driver and the only place you
 can get it
is from the Windows software on the Thompson site ... and you need
 Windows to unbundle it
from the .exe they send you.

 Ho hum.

Now I could go on various winges about having to have Windows to be able
 to have ADSL via
the Alcatel SpeedTouch 330 on Linux. But I suppose it's the manufacturer
 being inconvenient about
Linux and not providing the .sys file accordingly.

Either way, I am sure the developers have done the best they are able to.

I am however, quite confused about the documentation. The top level
 README is fairly explicit
in saying, do make, do make install, plug in the modem and you are away.

The HOWTO starts talking about kernel config ; which in my book seems to
 be a bit more
 than plugging in the modem.

 Which is right?

 So :
 1. if anyone knows the location of mgmt.o please would they let me know.
 2. Does anyone know if we have to reconfigure and recompile the kernel?

Looking forward to hearing from someone

 Regards of the season :)

 Lesley

Well, as I'm using the userspace drivers, I wont recompile my kernel. I have
another box that I have tried the kernelspace and probed the speectch
module -- however, I'm not sure if it registered properly. That's all water
under the bridge though, the userspace drivers should suffice.

My silver modem isn't Rev 2.00, it's 4.00. From what I gathered from Gilles's
post earlier, that would mean the ZZZLP2.eni firmware should correspond to
this revision -- however, modem_run -f ZZZLP2.eni brings the same old
story.

I'm running out of ideas here...

Your modem run under windows with wich version of the driver?
Is your ADSL line over ISDN?

Maybe I am right but it was just a quick look at the windows V3 driver.
I completly don't know what is done inside.
I just see a new model REV 4.00 named 'Alcatel ADSL adapter 330 (SACHU3)'
and a directory named sachu3 with a firmware inside.
So it's look clear to me.

The Windows driver is version 3, specifically C:\Windows\System\Alcan5wn.sys
is version 300.7.0.2 and the Firmware is version 330 1.0.10 (as reported
by the SpeedTouch diagnostic application). It's also reporting that the
Hardware version is 3572070, I'm not sure how that relates to REV_400 but
heh.

It's ADSL over PPPoA, not ISDN.

I agree that technically the SACHU3 firmware in the $SPEEDTOUCHDIR/Bin/
directory should work but modem_run -f zzz...emi didn't upload it.

Is it still so clear?

I really don't know if this is going to help

 I am downloading VMWAre (25 M via 56k dial up wail !!!)
then i am going to try and get the alcaudsl sorted from there.

 VMware does a 30 day trial ( www.vmware.com )

 Lesley

That would probably work but I would rather not have to emulate the firware --
I would still have to be running Windows AND using ICS. Not to mention that
vmware is proprietry!

Is that your solution?

I have already downloaded the Windows drivers from the Thomson Speedtouch
 website.
I don't know if this will work but I hope to be able to extract the
 Windows drivers
 and get alcaudsl.sys out.

I'll use the 30 day trial of VMWare to see if it can be done.
At the moment I have no other need of VMWare so don't plan buying it,
 simply see
if it works as a tool for a job that needs to be done.

I have finally finished downloading VMWare and have found my XP disk to
 install it.
Will let you know how it all works out.

BTW: I have the Alcatel SpeedTouch CD and although I can mount it under
 Linux
I can't read it under Linux. It was OK in XP. Did you have the same
 problem?

 Lesley

Why can't you read it?

I'll try to read mine in the morning, if it works and yours doesn't I'll just
archive them up for you.

I'm still very uneasy about using vmware for this. Sure, it'll work if you use
the bridged adapator it provides for ethernet (then ppp-that for ICL), but I
_really_ don't want to do that.

Merry Christmas,
