David,
Sorry, I don't know the comprehensive answer to your problem. If I had a
hunch, I'd say replace the flywheel and keep your set-up consistent with
being a 1296 MkIII.
But mainly I'm replying to say - none of us think you are being ridiculous
for trying this!! We have all (well most of
The 1500/1300 flywheels are the same, except for the bolt hole diameters that mount it
to the crankshaft.
The difference is in the disc and pressure plate. And I'm not sure that you can't use
either pressure plate at that.
The 1500 with the single rail gearbox used a 20 spline 7-1/4 clutch

Right, but the 1500 flywheel won't mate up to the early 1300 small bearing crankshaft
as I recall. Or will it?. Since he said he has what appears to be a 1500 flywheel on
his engine, I figured he had the later large bearing engine in there.

You are correct sir, but the flywheel was the same as those that were
used on later models except for the bolt holes which were enlarged
later. The mounting surface for the larger clutch was raised and the
disk fits into the recess inside the ridge.

I'll add that Rimmer has an adapter kit that will allow the flywheel
with larger holes to be used with a cranl that has smaller holes.
Basically, it is a set of bolts and sleeves that fill up the gaps.

Well, that's not an answer to the question and doesn't help Dave at all.
If indeed the 1500 flywheel does bolt up to the early 1300 in the Mk 3 with the small
bearings, then I'm all wet. But as I recall, it will not do so.
Which leaves Dave a bit up in the air on not only what flywheel he

Wow. A lot to take in from everyone.
There doesn't seem to be any prefix to the Trans code (unless it wore off?).
The clutch that i recieved IS the 6.5 one, and the flywheel measures in at
7.25 (approx.) and has the ridge on it...
So basically my options are these:
1.) Keep the flywheel and get
A late 1500 flywheel will definitely bolt up to a small bearing 1300, but
not correctly unless you have the kit from Rimmer that someone mentioned.
The bolts are the wrong size - too small for the holes in the flywheel. But
it will bolt on there - of course, then the only thing locating it is

to find a rear axle assembly that will accept wheels of the Spitfire lug

You have tried the spray around the carb for leaks

Hello,
I have a spare 3-rail tranny for my '72 that is in great shape except that the case is
cracked.
If you end up selling off most of the internal bits, I might be interested in just the
case.

Todd,
FWIW, I used all parts from Spitbits when I rebuilt my 1500 engine 3 years
ago. There have been no problems. I have not torn it down to check for
wear since. Personally, I'd run anything Nigel sells with little worry.

Yup - tr7 (and 8) use the same bolt pattern and would be my choise both in
terms of economy/availability and for handling a reasonable amount of power.
