I should think the only reason is that, when you unlatch, you reduce the
tension in the whole thing, so the zipper will be easier to move. Even
more so when zipping it back up again. Depends on how taut you get it!!
About installing snaps:
At the very least, use a die-and-anvil kit, like
the kind that comes with the Dritz brand snaps you
can buy at fabric stores. They also sell a plier-like
tool for installing snaps, but I got one and it
stinks.
The die and anvil (with a hammer) did a perfect job
for me.
