To get out the circlips, you need a pair of circlip pliers. This is kind of
like a pair of pliers, but at the end of them a pin sticks out sideways;
these pins fit in the little holes in the circlips. Insert the pins in the
holes, squeeze the handle, and the circlip should then compress

It also may help to tap the ujoint down a bit to relieve the
pressure on the circlip. If it's tight against the circlip,
the circlip will be much more difficult to remove.

I've had the clips snap off too- are you using the inside clip pliers? If
they're jammed and rusty, you can get a can of penetrating oil (basically
WD40 in a bottle), dump it in a coffee can and stand the end of the
