Using the data port on the rear would by-pass the audio input filters and drive the modulator directly for some good Hi-Fi operation., however, like you, I enjoy my various licenses far too much to mess around. I studied television and radio production in college, aside from the expense and amount of the equipment used, there isn't much difference between what is done in a major studio and what a fourth grader can do at home on a junk computer or some old tape decks.
