[Spooks] [OFF TOPIC] Middle Eastern Ham Radio
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Just out of curiosity, with the situation in Egypt unfolding as it is, I am curious if anyone has come across any Ham broadcasts coming out of Egypt. As you know, they don't have internet, so relaying uncensored information is almost impossible (without tethering to a cellphone and dialing an international isp). The only other affordable method I can think of would be Ham. So, has anyone caught any odd broadcasts potentially pertaining to Egypt in the last week? Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list My theory was that it was some sort of government experiment of a new digital transmission mode. I wasn't able to record any of it but the transmissions included an 800 ms data burst of some sort. In support of this idea, several radio amateurs filed complaints with the FCC because one of the frequencies used was in a ham band. The FCC took no action. And some people DF'ed the signals to be possibly from a government owned site in the desert near Albuquerque, NM. Guess we'll never know for sure. It hasn't returned to the airwaves since then. 73, Zack W9SZ On Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 7:26 PM, Richard cwmc...@yahoo.ca wrote: Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Now that brings back memories, I wonder if anyone ever came up with a theory as to what that was?? Re: [Spooks] Yosemite Sam.
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I believe it was on the UDXF Group, but could have been here as well. Several dozen people, SWLs, Hams, FCC and OOs tracked down the precise location, contractor, possible building and most likely group to be operating the system. Some people even provided Google Map aerial shots of the site. Although never acknowledged, once the people suspected of transmitting the signal were contacted and provided with details, the signal and frequencies changed. It's possible the signal is still out there, but without the Bugs Bunny cartoon audio clip which made it stand out. Catching this message before it goes out... There was a private e-mail group set up dedicated to tracking the signal down, I think there was about fifty of us on it. Kurt - Original Message - From: Zack Widup w9sz.z...@gmail.com : Where? Re: [Spooks] Yosemite Sam.
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I have heard the data burst sans-Sam. I noticed it showing up right on 15.000 near the top hour one night in winter 2009. Wasn't that about how the ys transmissions appeared - right on top of wwv? The bursts are so short that I suspect they're something mundane but annoyingly placed -- a sync signal, automatic propagation test...? Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Hmm. My friend (who reads this) has some sound clips on his website I believe of signals that sound identical and look identical spectrally to the data burst, but these are constant transmissions. I'll give a link when at my computer. -4D On Jan 31, 2011, at 23:20, Tom Morris bluen...@gmail.com wrote: Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I have heard the data burst sans-Sam.
