RE: Wall penetrations

2017-08-10 Thread Don Casey
In a prior life, the folks at Hilti have provided me ‘Engineered Judgements’
for installations that don’t fully comply with the UL listing.

Eddy flow told me to contact the firestop companies. I would think this would
have come up before now.

Quote:
"We do not perform any fire penetration tests on our sprinkler pipe.
Engineered Pipe (FLOW) has been manufactured for over 25 years. I would think
3M or others would have a fire rated penetration tested thru UL. They have
these details for electrical conduit/PVC Pipe which is a thinner wall thickness
than a Flow sprinkler pipe. Please check with your fire stop manufacturer
for their recommendations."

All the details I have looked at are, as bullmoose said, they are OK with EMT,
PVC, Copper etc. But steel pipe has to be "Sch.10 (or heavier)"

Hello Forumites!

I'm penetrating some walls with listed thinwall pipe (Eddy Flow). All of the
firestop details from Hilti or 3M say the penetrant shall be "Sch.10 or
heavier". Is their a detail for listed thinwall? Do I have to upsize to Sch.10
at the wall to penetrate it?

Thanks guys...

Just my perception maybe, but a water filled pipe would be much less likely to
fail when subjected to fire , regardless of the wall thickness, than a dry
(Empty)pipe.
