I browsed to that folder, went to Get info, and in 'Sharing &
Permissions' added my user name with Read & Write access. This seems to
have fixed the problem! I was a bit surprised.
The problem is that LMS crashes trying to write to its log file. I
thought I had a fix in place for more recent LM
Now it's true that many contributors have more than one role. So if I
just count the number of unique contributor names overall I get 3437.
The count also depends on what you consider an artist. What are your
settings?

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I just did some simple google
searches and came across a page explaining that there is sometimes a
problem with the folder: /Users//Library/Logs/Squeezebox.

I have always been baffled by the reported number of Artists. On my
system I see "1478 albums with 28162 songs by 1958 artists". The album
and 'song' counts are correct, but the artist count is very odd.
I have counted the number of 'contributors' for each role in the LMS
database, and get:
