I installed latest server 7.9.2 from 10/19/18 on a new Mac running
10.13.6. I repeatedly was hitting the fatal error:
[18-11-02 22:06:24.5305] main::main (331) Error: Failed when running
main scan: [Malformed UTF-8 character (fatal) at
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/Contents/server/Slim/Utils/Text.pm
line 163.
This occurred even after I requested a scan starting from scratch. I
tried multiple changes to Text.pm and what finally succeeded was the
following change a few lines above
if (!$caseArticlesCache{$key}) {
#use locale;
use utf8;
i.e, changing from 'use locale' to 'use utf8'. My perl fu is not strong
nor my utf-8-fu, but this does sort of make sense to me.
Anyway, thought I'd share in case it was useful to others.

I cannot reproduce the error now. I replaced "Louÿs" by "Louys", and the scanning went through. When I restored the previous orthography, the scanner error didn't occur. I bet it will once you do a full wipe & rescan? A bug keeps reappearing on the macOS scanner: it chokes on a track with the following TITLE "La flûte de Pan (Pierre Louÿs)". It dislikes the umlaut over the letter "y". Do you get any error message? Do you have any link to a thread discussing this? I must assume March 7 2017? I don't see any change related to the scanner around there. What happened that day is that I release 7.9.0. What LMS build are you running? PS: How about a warning on the main page of the Web interface that the last scheduled rescan has failed? Better: could Jivelite, conceivably, convey this info?
