Well of course you should be able to connect to MSB.com directly from a
player.
On a Boom/SB3/Transporter, press and hold the left 4 way rocker button
on the remote until it bumps, scroll to mysqueezebox .com > arrow right
and you're connected. (I've just done it on my Boom).

If you put a new album in the folder that LMS scans, then using "Music
Folder" to browse to that new album automatically adds it to the LMS
database without needing to do a scan.
If you use "Discs & Folders" to browse to folders that LMS doesn't scan,

That's because the update file is already downloaded to a folder on your
Pi.
You can either update LMS, or try to find the file and delete it,
restart LMS and you should't see any more update nags.

You say you've tried to play some music from your Raspberry Pi, can you
describe where and how you selected the track(s) you wish to play?

The microSD card is the default location for the LMS cache. But you can
move it to an attached USB drive if you wish.
