This makes sense due to Squid being a proxy. When forwarding a request it

On the xhtml content i set the Cache-control header as
 must-revalidate,max-age=0,s-maxage=36000.
The browser will always check back for changes, squid will get a purge
 request if something changes.

This breaks as soon as some transparent proxy gets in the way that picks
 up the s-maxage header.

Does not need to be a transparent proxy, just any proxy supporting
s-maxage will do this.

The above headers says

  * Shared caches (i.e. proxies) may cache the object for 36000 seconds
  * All other caches (i.e. browsers) must check with their source (i.e.
the proxy in proxied environment) if the source knows about a newer copy.

So i'd like to strip any s-maxage headers or set them to 0 when passing
through squid. I took a look at header_access and header_replace:

 header_access Cache-control deny all
 header_replace Cache-control Must-revalidate,max-age=0,s-maxage=0

This makes the browser check back for everything on every request
 (stylesheets, pics...), very slow.

What i'd like to achieve is a conditional replace only if s-maxage was
included in the original header. Is this possible with some acl matching
 magic?

If you know which URLs you need to do this on then just make
a urlpath_regex pattern matching which URLs this need to be done on (or
not done on) and then use this in header_access when determining if the
header should be replaced.

[squid-users] squid cache poisoing

2003-12-18 Thread vikram mohite
Hi,

We are running two squid proxies one with RedHat 8.0 and the other RedHat
9.0 with default kernels.

Interscan viruswall ver. 3.8 is also runnig on both the proxies and are
acting as parent proxies for squid proxies.

The squid version and config parameters are as given below.

# /usr/local/squid/sbin/squid -v
Squid Cache: Version 2.5.STABLE3
configure options: --enable-async-io --enable-carp
The hardware configs of both the proxies are exactly same ( HP DL 580 ,
16GB RAM , 4 x 72 GB HDD ). There are three cache directories of 60 GB disk
space each ( three partitions /cache1 , /cache2 and /cache3 with reiserfs
FS) on each proxy i.e. total of 180GB cache.

For last few days we are facing very strange problem as described below.

Whenever user tries to access few sites e.g. www.google.com,
www.rediff.com, www.indiatimes.com , www.yahoo.com and many more . all what
s/he gets is coolsavings.com web page.

We suspected some adware might have got installed in local client machine
so we cleared all local cache , cookles etc. and again tried but the problem
continued. We then tried through lynx and links from linux desktops and
problem persisted there also.

We then stopped squid , cleared cache and restarted again. Iit worked for
few minutes but again the whole thing started with users only able to see
coolsavings.com pages.

We then stopped squid entirely and divered all user traffic through
viruswall acting as a proxy and it worked fine. We then recompiled squid
with storeio as null option and started squid without caching enabled and it
worked fine.

But since we could not work without cache and could not use viruswall as
proxy we had to find other solution. We then blocked coolsavings.com on
proxy with IPTABLES rules and it resolved the problem.

To understand the problem we removed IPTABLES rules, cleared the cache again
and put ethereal on client machine. When the problem reoccured we captured
the entire TCP stream. We again cleared the cache and opened the page
captured which immediatly reproduced the problem. The problem was also
reproduced on all other client machines accessing the proxy .

Strangly I have not been able to reproduce the problem on any other squid
proxy running same versions of squid ( diff hardware config but same
squid.conf )

Now I have again put the firewall rules and everything is working fine but
I'm unable to find the cause of the problem.

Kindly help

Hmmm- unfortunately matching by url isn't really possible in
this case. Guess i'll just leave it for now.

Tried replacing the Vary spec with Vary : * But this of course doesn't
cause the other caches to refresh for a certain user.

Are there any plans for acl matching based on arbitrary header contents?
I've seen that it's possible to parse headers for authentication with
external programs, will have a closer look at that.

[squid-users] problem with squid and squid2mysql

2003-12-18 Thread Alex Sharaz
hi all,
Got a small problem here with squid running in conjunction with squid2mysql
on a linux box.

Config is

RH 9 system running as squid cache with a back end mysql database runnning
on another machine.
Perl 5.08 installed with dbi module, mysql drivers and perl::ldap

Created a special file on the webcache called /logs/mysqlacess.log and have
started

cat /logs/mysqlaccess.log|tee -a
/logs/access.log|/usr/local/bin/squid2mysql 2/logs/squid2mysql.err

The above means I can still have the standard access.log file and dump
log entries into a back end database.

A back end RADIUS authentication database is also present to authenticate
various classes of users.

For various reasons i can't set up our dial in service to authenticate to
our web caches, so i've added some code to the squid2mysql perl prog that
performs an ldap query of our RADIUS server whenever a log file entry
appears with a client ip address that comes from our dialin service.
Basically it asks the radius server for the userid currently logged onto
the ip address obtained from the access log entry.

When i go through a web cache configured as described, everything works.
When i try routing all of our dial in service calls through it the squid
process crashes. I *think* its to do with the ldap lookups performed for
every log record associated with our dial in service - all i see in the
logs is FATAL: Received Segment Violation...dying.

Just before I crank up the logging to see whats happening, anyone out there
using squid2mysql on a linux platform? - just to double check that it does
work in a production environment

The server is an Compaq DL350 G3 with 2G of ram with linux RH7 /

It doesnt matter how I set cache_mem , kernel keeps caching (file

I search google for ways of setting vm on 2.4 to *not* eat all my

If is normal that all free memory is used for cache. This is how the
kernel should work. It is however not normal that this causes swapping.

If nothing else works, try disabling the swap.. With 2GB of memory you

Squid sames to work fine, but cpu usage after ~60Req/Sec on each server
 is always 100%
I have tried many changes to squid.conf with no results.

Probably the first thing to look at is whether or not the high CPU
problem comes from select/poll looping very quickly. For example:

% squidclient mgr:5min | grep -i select
select_loops = 72.180305/sec
select_fds = 19.528906/sec
average_select_fd_period = 0.007477/fd
median_select_fds = 0.00

I think median_select_fds is essentially broken and always returns 0.

I plot the values for my caches, which you can see here:
http://www.ircache.net/Statistics/Vitals/rrd/cgi/select.day.cgi

You might want to add 'half_closed_clients off' to your config file
and see if that helps.

 Hi there,

Please forgive me if this question has been asked/answered before (I

We currently have six RedHat Linux V8.0 servers running Squid V2.5
Stable in the following parent/child proxy chain:

User U Iprism URL filters Squid caching (child) HTTP Anti-virus
 (parent) Internet

We have six of each - with each currently having a one-to-one
 relationship (ie. IPRISM1P SQUID1 AV1 INET, etc).We would like
to create a load-balanced situation here if at all possible.

probably the only part we can help you with is the way that SQUID selects
which AV parent to send a request to.

One approach is to make a DNS name or /etc/hosts entry for the AV servers
that has all their IP addresses. Then you put a single line in squid.conf:

 cache_peer av-servers.example.com parent 0 no-query

Another approach is to list all servers separately and use the round-robin option

 cache_peer 172.16.0.1 parent 0 no-query round-robin
 cache_peer 172.16.0.2 parent 0 no-query round-robin
 cache_peer 172.16.0.3 parent 0 no-query round-robin
 cache_peer 172.16.0.4 parent 0 no-query round-robin
 cache_peer 172.16.0.5 parent 0 no-query round-robin
 cache_peer 172.16.0.6 parent 0 no-query round-robin

Yet another approach is to use CARP:

 cache_peer 172.16.0.1 parent 0 no-query carp-load-factor=0.16
 cache_peer 172.16.0.2 parent 0 no-query carp-load-factor=0.16
 cache_peer 172.16.0.3 parent 0 no-query carp-load-factor=0.17
 cache_peer 172.16.0.4 parent 0 no-query carp-load-factor=0.17
 cache_peer 172.16.0.5 parent 0 no-query carp-load-factor=0.17
 cache_peer 172.16.0.6 parent 0 no-query carp-load-factor=0.17

[squid-users] False Web addresses, and how to handle them

2003-12-18 Thread Eric Geater 12/12/03
I read an article in EWeek that explained how to create a misleading web
link or link in email by typing the acceptable http address, followed by
%01%00@ and the actual destination address. I showed it to my boss,
who didn't like what she saw.

Is it possible to create an ACL in Squid that specifically stomps out
misdirected URLs? I don't know if Squid must accept literal characters
when sniffing out URLs for ACLs, since the %01 and %00 are hex
representations. Anyone have an idea about this? If so, it'd be a boon
to add another ACL that stops this simple exploit at the proxy.

According to the W3 consortium, the @ symbol is a reserved character, so
it's probably not wise to block for it exclusively.

Thanks!

[squid-users] squid_ldap_group authentication against Active Directory

2003-12-18 Thread Keppner, Christoph
Hi,

i'm trying to restrict access to my squid cache to users of a special group
ProxyUsers in Active Directory. I have Debian Testing (Sarge) with
squid-2.5Stable4 installed.

First i tried with the ldap_auth command:

/usr/lib/squid/ldap_auth -b dc=dhc-gmbh,dc=com -R -D [EMAIL PROTECTED] -w
SeCrEt -f sAMAccountName=%s myW2KServer

In this way, when i enter username password lines, i get OK or ERR, and
everything is fine. The problem: every valid user with a valid password has
access to the cache.

I read many mailings on this list (and some other too), but i didn't find a
good hint.

I know so far, that squid_ldap_group is the right program, but how do i use
it? In a mail from Henrik Nordstrom, there was this description:

 0. Optionally bind (login) as a dummy user (by DN) if anonymous
searches is disallowed in the directory (-D+-W arguments)
 1. Search for the user in the directory (-F argument with the same data
 as -f to squid_ldap_auth)
 2. Search for the group in the directory and verify that the user is
member of the group (-f argument).

How must the -f argument looks like?!? In some mails, people talk about some
examples, that are shipped with squid and work fine with Active Directory,
but i can't find them. I'm not very familiar with ldap searchstrings so can
somebody give me a hint, how the FULL command looks?

Greetings
Christoph

Its not currently possible to block such requests in Squid because
the funny characters are a part of the login component of the

There are several better options than smb_auth for use against Active Directory:
* LDAP (reliable) - The FAQ has info on configuring LDAP helpers
* Samba Winbind (a little more complicated - but using NTLM authentication IE users
won't need to type in a username/password - it'll pull it directly). Don't forget you
need Samba 3. http://itmanagers.net/[EMAIL PROTECTED] has details of getting it going.

How must the -f argument looks like?!?

The manual has some good hints on this. The purpose of the -f argument to
squid_ldap_group is similar to the purpose of the -f argument to
squid_ldap_auth but looking for a matching group rather than a matching
user.

Usually this looks like

  -f ((cn=%g)(member=%u)(objectClass=groupOfNames))

asking the helper to search for a groupOfNames with the group name as cn
and the user DN as member. Should probably make this the default when -F
is specified.

The user DN is looked up by the -F argument in the same manner as the -f
argument to squid_ldap_auth.

I bumped redirector_children to 40, and still got he same message
repeated over and over.

Is this telling me that my redirectors are dying from an error in the
redirector code, or what?

Thanks,

Murrah Boswell

Is this telling me that my redirectors are dying from an error in the

Make sure that the Squid userid is able to execute the redirector
program. Check file and directory permissions.

Re: [squid-users] False Web addresses, and how to handle them

2003-12-18 Thread Duane Wessels
Its not currently possible to block such requests in Squid because
the funny characters are a part of the login component of the
URL. Squid doesn't have any ACLs that use or care about the login
data. It should be pretty easy to come up with a patch that does.

The attached patch adds a new ACL type: urllogin

With it you could write some rules to deny any HTTP request that contains
any login credentials:

 acl UrlHasLogin urllogin .
 http_access deny UrlHasLogin

or you can deny a request where the login data contains
a non-alphanumeric character:

 acl SketchyLogin urllogin [^a-zA-Z0-9]
 http_access deny SketchyLogin
