I did a little investigation and it looks like the part of web.xml has nothing to do with displaying a custom icon in the web browser's address bar, as I suspected. I think is intended to allow you to specify a custom icon for your web app that will appear in GUI tools related to the app s

And one more thing... the favicon doesn't seem to show up in IE unless you add the page to your Favorites. And even then it only seems to work if the page is not secure (it only works for http://, not https://). And it doesn't show the icon for all pages in the site, just the particular
