Quite a bit of changes driven by the undo code. That is the main body of
difference, but there are others. In my first draft it's ~65 vs ~180 commits

I think I opt for option b) as well. The new filter is usable but I think it's
not ready for release, due to too much open discussion on the exact
functionality.
