some time; I can't say when it will be working seamlessy.
Currently the best way to have sugar running will probably be using
debian, and of course there will be issues with binaries in the
activities.

USB key with SoaS on it and mount its home partition at login time:
this would help keeping some of the advantages of SoaS (the ability to
work from any computer anywhere while keeping your journal, for one)
with the added convenience of being able to use older hardware.

suspend-to-disk is used? afaik in that case
the memory contents are written to the swap partition between hardware
reboots.
That's not something that is usually done on desktop PCs, of course,
so it may not be a problem right now.

is generally feasible,
requiring skills broadly comparable to those needed to jailbreak an
iphone; of course deployment will need support / permission from
whoever is going to sell the hardware, to be able to preinstall
gnu/linux + sugar instead of the standard system.

actually, the issues in these links seems to be mostly with
partitioning rather than plain formatting; under e.g. linux a simple
::
mkfs.vfat /dev/sdb1
shouldn't be more problematic than simply writing the same (small
AFAIK) amount of data.

the beginning of the file; you lose the graphical boot choice
screen, but at least the stick works.
do you know what versions of syslinux are on your ubuntu and on the
fedora machine that worked?
