Subject: [GCI-mentors] GCI 2018 org applications open September 6-17 -
contest begins October 23rd for students
To: Google Code-in Mentors

Hello GCI mentors,

We are pleased to announce Google Code-in (GCI) 2018 , the
9th consecutive year of our contest for pre-university students ages
13-17. Please
be aware GCI will start about a month earlier this year than in previous
years - the contest starts for students October 23rd!

The GCI timeline, FAQs, Rules and flyers have been updated on the contest
site .

Organizations -- If you would like to apply for the 2018 program please
start thinking about the tasks you would like students to work on and reach
out to your community members to ask if they would like to be mentors for
the program. *Organization applications open for GCI orgs *next week on
Thursday, September 6th, and close less than 2 weeks later on Monday,
September 17th. We will announce organizations on Tuesday, September 18th
giving orgs 5 weeks to create their tasks before the contest begins on
October 23rd.

The major changes for GCI 2018 are:

   -

Orgs will evaluate the 20 students completing the most tasks with their
org when deciding on finalists and winners
   -

Orgs will choose 6 finalists (instead of 5)
   -

We have renamed the User Interface category to Design
   -

Students will have to wait until Google reviews their Parental Consent
form before they can claim their first task. This will slow things down but
it is a requirement to be able to continue the program.
   -

No tasks asking for personal information about students will be allowed
(this includes tasks asking for students to introduce themselves with info
like what country they are from, or photos of the students, etc.).

We are looking to continue the growth of this program and reach a record
number of teenagers this year! Read more on today’s blog post

.

If you have any questions about Google Code-in please contact us at
gci-supp...@google.com

Best,

Stephanie and Mary

Re: [Sugar-devel] Copy content to journal from Terminal

2018-08-29 Thread James Cameron
G'day,

Three different methods;

1. copy the files to ~/Documents or whatever the localised name is
for the same directory; you can easily find this by using the Journal
to copy an object back,

2. use copy-to-journal program, part of sugar-datastore
component, usually in /bin/copy-to-journal, but this requires an
active datastore process, accessed through D-Bus, so the Terminal
activity must be used,

3. use content bundles; you can see some old content bundles in OLPC
OS 13.2.9, see end of page http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activities/13.2.9

[Sugar-devel] Copy content to journal from Terminal

2018-08-29 Thread Alejandro Calderón
Hi everybody,

At this time I'm trying a couple things to implement in my own build, and
I'm trying to put content such as PDF or pictures or whatever in the
journal from the terminal using bash scripts.

Could you help me telling me, which is the right location to put files and
make it accessible through the journal or what can I do to make it possible?

Than you in advance.

Regards!

Re: [Sugar-devel] Development Team Meeting, 28th August 10PM UTC

2018-08-29 Thread James Cameron
G'day,

Thanks for asking. I didn't think anybody was reading the minutes I
was writing, as there were few replies.

Our [meeting robot](http://meeting.sugarlabs.org/) is unavailable due
to registration controls added to avoid automated attacks on the
freenode network.

But I do have a channel log of the meeting, see below "".

Development that I'm doing recently is mostly maintenance, due to
changing APIs on which Sugar depends;

- port to GTK+ 3,

- port from GObject to GLib,

- port to TelepathyGLib,

- port from GStreamer Gst.Message.structure to get_structure(),

- port from GConf to Gio.Settings

- port to Python 3 via Six,

You can view pull requests in GitHub. Many available for review.

I've not seen you before; welcome. See also [How to get started as a

quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[08:14:50] Ibiam: no, it's not because of that.
[08:15:11] Why if I may ask
[08:15:49] Ibiam: since we lost previous maintainers of aslo, i don't
have a reason why it is running on ubuntu 14.04 trusty. most likely just never
upgraded, as trusty is still supported for a while longer.
[08:16:23] Okay
[08:16:42] Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS end of life date is April 2019.
[08:17:07] Hopefully we get someone to upgrade
[08:17:11] It went for several months without PHP security updates
applied though, because of losing previous maintainers.
[08:17:31] Ibiam: not likely to find someone to spend that time when we
keep talking about replacing it; v2, v3, whatever comes next.
[08:17:40] Will Bernie help out since he's available at the moment
[08:17:52] Quozl, right
[08:18:32] Quozl I know a plan is ongoing for v3 but haven't heard much
[08:19:31] Ibiam: my guess is we've lost anyone who wants a v3, so i'll
not push it, but keep v1 working.
[08:19:45] aslo is back up after reboot.

[08:20:44] okay to wrap up the meeting? Ibiam. walterbender.
[08:20:58] Quozl, one last thing
[08:21:02] Ibiam: go ahead.
[08:21:20] How has SL handled their currency assurance policy in the
past
[08:21:31] Any ideas
[08:21:37] Ibiam: what is a currency assurance policy?
[08:21:43] As to updating the membership list
[08:22:13] Quozl, in simple terms keeping members list up to date
[08:22:23] Ibiam_, I don't understand...
[08:22:25] A check is done once a year
[08:22:37] From memory, someone would run a script to send a series of
mails to the members one by one asking for them to confirm they wish to remain
members.
[08:22:52] why?
