Re: [Sugar-devel] Improving Reading Experience

2009-07-27 Thread Jim Simmons
Bastien,

All books in IA should be available as both PDFs and DjVu's. Some are
also available as B/W PDFs. I filter on DjVu, offer all three formats
in the combo box, and show a message dialog when you try to download a
B/W PDF and there isn't one. No doubt this could be improved, but if
you want to download a color PDF you just need to change the option in
the combo box.

Thanks,

James Simmons

I'm running sugar-jhbuild, so I'll need to try first to support .djvu in
evince then recompile sugar-jhbuild. Thanks for the directions.

Maybe a filter in GIAB would be nice, so that we can pick up .pdf files
or .djvu files only.

To make it fun, throw a soundtrack of something instrumental and colorful.
http://ccmixter.org is a good place to look for CC tracks, loops, beats,

Caroline and Bastien,

What might work to show how many books are available is to do a search
on the word "boy" and another on the word "girl", then maybe "oz" and
"jules verne". Any one of these should return lots of titles. You
might also try "lincoln" or "washington" to show a bunch of non
fiction titles.

For the actual reading I recommend "Abroad" or "Jack and the Giants".

There is a tag cloud for the Children's collection which is kind of neat:

2009-07-27 Thread Jim Simmons
Bastien,

To open a djvu file in evince you need a plugin. This plugin is
included in Fedora but not installed by default. I would guess the
situation is similar in other distros. In Fedora I would do a yum
search on "djvu" or "evince" to find it.

If that doesn't work you can download a PDF instead. All IA books
should be available in that format as well.

Thanks,

I downloaded latest version of GIAB from activities.sugarlabs.org.
I downloaded a few books in .djvu format (it seems this is the main
format available in Internet Archive) but couldn't open it in Read.

Shall I search for other books in other formats?

Bastien,

What might be more suited to Caroline's purposes is a demo of Get
Internet Archive Books, followed by demoing reading the downloaded
book in Read. In Fedora 11 I can use the Read Activity (I couldn't in
any other Sugar test environment I ever had). The advantage of doing
this is the books have pictures. Caroline is trying to sell Sugar
itself, so we want to show reading for children at it's best. Since
Gutenberg etexts are without pictures, plus we would have to explain
why it is that we have more than one Activity for reading (something
there is no need for them to know at this time) I think this is the
way to go.

If you go to the Internet Archive website you should be able to get a
list of children's books that you could search for with GIAB.
Caroline might suggest some that are not controversial. I just found
out that the Oz books have been banned in a few places. There is a
book "Abroad" which is quite beautiful and might be considered for a
demo.

Caroline,

I still haven't heard from Dave C. I have downloaded the application
that Bastien used, haven't tried it yet but it looks straightforward
to use. It produces files using open formats, which can be converted
to the more popular non open formats. I should be able to create some
recordings like Bastien made and put them on shell.sugarlabs.org where
Dave could download them. He could then edit them, add music or
narration, title cards or whatever. So what remains is this:

1). What video formats can he work with?

2). What do you want demonstrated? What Activities, what functions
in each? I can certainly use children's books in the demos. Do you
have suggestions for which ones might be used?

3). Is Dave still interested in this? If so, have him email me.

Can we get one with childrens books demoed? I think also skip the

Bastien,

What software do you use to create a video like this?

Thanks,

Great - note that my videos are just quick preview, "teasing" the user.
If we want more elaborate stuff we should certainly discuss a bit more
on how to do this.

Can't wait for that!

Bastien,

Nice video. Caroline was interested in creating a video about reading
in general in Sugar, so I am copying her on this because it might be
of interest.

Glad you like the Activity. I should be releasing a new version that
fully supports annotations and highlighting soon.

Thanks again,

James Simmons

Hi Jim and Sugar,

yet another quick-and-modest video preview about Read Etext:

  http://vimeo.com/5757068

I *love* this activity, thanks for it!

Re: [Sugar-devel] Improving Reading Experience

2009-07-24 Thread Jim Simmons
Gary,

I have no great love for .82, but at the moment there is no good way
to put .84 on an XO. .84 solves a lot of reading-related problems:

1). Useable support for Deja Vu in Read.

2). Custom Journal metadata that persists across a reboot (so the
Read Activity can remember what page I stopped reading on, something
that has been a problem since the day I first got my XO).

3). The gstreamer plugin for espeak is included, so people can finally
use text to speech with highlighting in Read Etexts.

4). Support for current, limited function version of the Library
Activity, for whatever that's worth.

>From what I've seen of .84 on SoaS and on Fedora 11 if I could get .84
on my XO I'd be a happy camper.
