Re: [Sugar-devel] Improving Reading Experience
Bastien, All books in IA should be available as both PDFs and DjVu's. Some are also available as B/W PDFs. I filter on DjVu, offer all three formats in the combo box, and show a message dialog when you try to download a B/W PDF and there isn't one. No doubt this could be improved, but if you want to download a color PDF you just need to change the option in the combo box. Bastien, To open a djvu file in evince you need a plugin. This plugin is included in Fedora but not installed by default. I would guess the situation is similar in other distros. Bastien, What might be more suited to Caroline's purposes is a demo of Get Internet Archive Books, followed by demoing reading the downloaded book in Read. In Fedora 11 I can use the Read Activity (I couldn't in any other Sugar test environment I ever had). The advantage of doing this is the books have pictures. Caroline is trying to sell Sugar itself, so we want to show reading for children at it's best. Caroline, I still haven't heard from Dave C. I have downloaded the application that Bastien used, haven't tried it yet but it looks straightforward to use. It produces files using open formats, which can be converted to the more popular non open formats. I should be able to create some recordings like Bastien made and put them on shell.sugarlabs.org where Dave could download them. He could then edit them, add music or narration, title cards or whatever. So what remains is this: 1). What video formats can he work with? 2). What do you want demonstrated? What Activities, what functions in each? I can certainly use children's books in the demos. Do you have suggestions for which ones might be used? 3). Is Dave still interested in this? If so, have him email me. Re: [Sugar-devel] Improving Reading Experience
Gary, I have no great love for .82, but at the moment there is no good way to put .84 on an XO. .84 solves a lot of reading-related problems: 1). Useable support for Deja Vu in Read. 2). Custom Journal metadata that persists across a reboot (so the Read Activity can remember what page I stopped reading on, something that has been a problem since the day I first got my XO). 3). The gstreamer plugin for espeak is included, so people can finally use text to speech with highlighting in Read Etexts. 4). Support for current, limited function version of the Library Activity, for whatever that's worth. >From what I've seen of .84 on SoaS and on Fedora 11 if I could get .84 on my XO I'd be a happy camper.
