Speaking
of the "dark room" photograph effect, I discovered I had the

The difficulty came from the small size (only 3/16"
approximately) of the sun spot on the target paper. I noticed

Thanks for a great idea,

Perhaps the work done for NASA to draw hour and date lines on images
from the Mars rovers' sundials could be used to reverse engineer photos
of earthbound dials.
Woody Sullivan posted some background info on the MarsDial a few weeks
ago (see below). One of the URLs he recommended

Hi John,
Interestingly, the notion of a skylight is what got me going on this
perhaps quixotic quest. My house is two stories high. The room where
I want the indoor sundial is on the first floor, so I'd have to

Hi Edley and all,
The plot thickens! What if, instead of a lens, a reflector is used?
Suppose I borrow the so-called Victorian gazing ball from my garden (a
large metal ball with a mirror finish, about 30 cm diameter) and mount
it at the edge of my roof. If I lie underneath it and observe
sundial? (Without demolishing my neighbor's house or spending
a ton of money?)

The converter at

A problem I have with email from individuals is that I don't recognize all the
sundial senders so I am likely to just delete them without reading, on the
assumption they are spam. However, if the subject is obviously related to
dialing, I'll look at it.
