Dear Roger,
I enjoyed your response to my playground thoughts

Hi all,
Once I heard about a class that had a project related to time.
The first thing they did was mark on the wall the exact place of the
shadow of a marker they had put on the (nearly south) window each
schoolday at 3 specific times. I forgot what times but certainly
12:00 was used.

Dear Frank and All,
Your observations are very good, the number of adults and children that can
properly use even a ruler seems small. Your using a vertical pole as a
gnomon is worthwhile. A knowledgeable and able person could establish a
dial center offset toward the equator in such a way tha

One might argue that the single page of cutouts
now provided is indicative of the level of effort
the school wishes to put into this subject.
Perhaps, then, we should design that page and
also provide two pages of explanatory material
for the teacher.? I think this is the best for which

as a schoolteacher and teacher-trainer helped a little. The current
version is mainly self-instructional material for *teachers* who need

Dear All,
I have read the correspondence about Oscar with
much interest. "How," it is almost asked, "can
we used sundials as a means of interesting
children in science?"
Like Tony Moss, and no doubt several others on
this list, I have given many talks on Sundials
in schools and to brownies and c

Perhaps for a child of 8, a single-page explanation/illustration with cutout
dial at the bottom is the ticket.? Can it be done?? Then how about two pages?

Just to correct some wrong information..There was a book for
schools written through the auspices of the Bristish Sundial Society by a group
of members of which I was only one of nine on the team. It was called "Make a
Sundial", and brought out in 1991 in response to many queries

d any advice on material to use?
This will help Oscar and lower my blood pressure but the material
could also be made available via this mailing list to help other
Oscars in other parts of the world.
I look forward to hearing from you.
