[freenet-support] 5093 down and out

2004-09-03 Thread miguel
This is getting old for me too. Left the system up all night and it
retrieved 2 pages of about 10 I requested. YoYo and the standard node
site. If something doesn't improve I'll have to give up Freenet for a
while.

[freenet-support] the Freenet crawl

2004-08-28 Thread miguel
I am no Java programmer but I have done quite a bit of database structuring work
and a number of small C apps and I do know that when my stuff evolves to
a point of failure I do a rollback to a functional version and then start
again to implement the new changes in smaller pieces. I guess I am the student
advising the master, but it is really only to remind the master of certain design
precepts. I think 5085 was a very good year(if memory serves me).
5092 is even more stuck than 5091 was. Ouch!!!

[freenet-support] Freenets gone wild

2004-08-26 Thread miguel
For the past week+ my v.5091 has degraded to the point of virtual
uselessness. None, repeat NONE of the standard bookmark sites
open(Find, YoYO, etc.) Downloads don't work. The only content that I
CAN get are some things I have gotten previous to this fiasco. Not that
it matters but I also increased my data store from 10 to 12 gigs and it
is using only about 6. I re-seeded and re-exported the ref file.
Nothing works right the way it used to before about v.5087. I am
wasting too much time trying to make her run like she did way back when.

[freenet-support] anonymity(NOT)

2004-08-04 Thread miguel
Just wondering... with all this encryption permeating Freenet
there remains a gaping hole through which the nazi's could saunter through
with their spy tools and legal bypasses to incriminate any and all Freenetters
they choose to incriminate... the ip address/port# of all. Even using a third party
dns service wouldn't help. Maybe not this day, but in light of current trends in
government policies, in the not-too-distant future they will be slipping in and
snagging
whomever they choose by the ip address and will thus render useless all Freenet
anonymity measures.
Is there not a way to spoof the ip addresses, or mask the ip addresses so that our
uncles
and big brothers can't come in and bring down the house(s)?

[freenet-support] "Freenet Down!"

2004-07-27 Thread miguel
For the first time since I started Freenet some 10 months ago it has failed!
Build 5085 was fine. 5086... trash. Downhill. It would not find even YoYo, plus,
it would just disconnect after 4 or 5 hours. This is a first for me since I usually
run
Freenet for days without a restart.

Enter 5087. THe last time 5086 disconnected I went to my web interface and I found
5087. Great! I'll update and these problems with 5086 will be fixed.
Fat chance. Now Freenet won't even connect, period!

Log file:
Jul 27, 2004 5:21:34 PM (freenet.node.Main, main, ERROR): Caught
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError running or seeding node
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

This is a first for me. A rollback to 5085 is in order. Danke! (Do I need to polish
my German
a bit and go to Entropy?) Ich denke das ist nicht sehr gut. Auf wiedersehn Freenet?

[freenet-support] proxy search

2004-07-21 Thread miguel
Zenon, doing proxy stuff to let "outsiders" into freenet is inviting in the wolves.
Why do that?
And you'll be the first to get maimed and eaten before the rest of ALL the other
Freenetters.

[freenet-support] blacklist whitelist

2004-07-02 Thread miguel
This talk of blacklisting makes me want to puke.
Let's just go back to the censored internet. Man, we're getting our own little
versions of Big Brother on here.
If you don't want to look at it, don't look at it, or get off of Freenet.
I doubt that Ian would agree with all this talk of censorship(euphemized as
"blacklisting").
So, we don't like Janet Jackson's breast nor Howard Stern's mouth. Don't look. Don't
listen.

[freenet-support] DATA STORE

2004-06-16 Thread miguel
Hey there! I have a 6+ gigabyte datastore(yeah, yeah, hold the praise.
Thank you, thank you...)
What I can't figure is this...
When I stop Freenet for whatever reason, and then restart it, it looks
to me like it should load some of my previously acquired data and images
etc. quickly, getting them from my own datastore. Instead though, here
we go again, tapping fingers on desk, going for coffee, taking a nap,
going out for a movie, taking a vacation when, upon return, VOILA, I'm
back to where I was before restarting Freenet.
How can I force my system to look through my own datastore first OR how
can I force my system to put my stuff in my datastore and then go there
to retrieve it before going out on a world cruise for more? Anonymity
issues? What? The stuff I have is all encrypted anyway.
Please help me to force a local search/retrieve first.
IS THERE HELP?
P.S. The recent Linux/Windoze duels, though off the subject, are quite
entertaining. I'm rooting for the underpenguin.

[freenet-support] optimum settings

2004-06-12 Thread miguel
Could Toad or Ian or someone out there supply us with some config file settings that
will make Freenet run optimally(on most machines) without us having to do
experiment after time-consuming experiment until we eventually(or not) discover which
settings are best. And please, just some good, tried basics withour getting into
"well, depending on your cpu this, or your memory that, and so on...".
Basics please. Help, please.

[freenet-support] slowdom in freeville

2004-03-10 Thread miguel
duh, guys, I'm a newbie +- so I can only make observations so here:
(note: order does not indicate weight nor priority)
1. Get a female to work on this thing.
2. At least run permanent node.
3. DSL ain't no faster when it hits the freenet bogs.
4. The last 3 or 4+ builds have gotten slower and dumber.
5. The updates and re-seeds seem to be distancing us from the majority
of the data-holding nodes out there that are not updating often enough
(or not updating at all)
6. As per performance: Your OS shouldn't matter(though the "L" is king
(-;), your cpu and ram will virtually max-out to whatever you've got
available, and then some, and pulling your pants down off firewall just
means people will get offended at such a sight but it won't help your
node. And store size? Don't make no difference either.
7.The java threads are inconstant. I now have to restart several
times a day and after killing all threads the restart can spawn
anywhere from 1 to 20+ threads depending on the random seed of the
moment.
8.I'd say if all data were stored and retained by freenet from one
build to the next the performance would be outstanding(compared to
now)and, programmer dudes, put a tighter leash on that Java bulldog.

Because of recent performance declines I have been severely tempted
to drop freenet but I refuse because it'll be one of the last freedoms
that the fascists kill and I want to be there to watch it die.
I offer my machine to run whatever service I can to make this thing
work better for all of us. Any takers?

signed: Whatever(aka Whoever)
