Best User Experiences (SHR)
I have been using SHR for a while, and for the most part I am happy with it. There are a couple of issues I've been trying to resolve. 1. The text messages do not reflect the proper date. I know the correct date is being recorded to the sim because when I pop the sim into another phone I see it. Is there another Phone app that I can install on top of SHR that will make the phone more usable? 2. Is there a way to get google maps on the Freerunner? 3. Re: Setting app nor opkg update seem to be working
I recommend using SHR's unstable image, the July 3rd image, as an everyday phone. They just came out with a new build today which I have not yet tested. om2009, though pretty reliable, is lacking in terms of other software you can install to make a nice smart phone. On my phone I have GPS working (Initial TangoGPS may take 15 mins to locate position), GPRS is reliable (not quite stable). I can send and receive text messages and phone calls reliably. It is the most stable distro and usable distro out there that I've tested. Only tweak that I had to do is to low Control.4's value to below 100 in /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmhandset.state to avoid echos on the other end for calls. http://build.shr-project.org/shr-unstable/images/om-gta02/ On Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 10:26 AM, Bill Purcell li...@whpiv.net wrote: Yeah, I have 2008.8. SHR Unstable
I wanted to send an email saying that the work being done on SHR Unstable is pretty awesome. True to its name, it's unstable, yet I feel its more usable than om2009's latest build. The biggest advantage that it has over om2009, is that it has a bigger repository of apps that work, e.g. FBreader is unusable in om2009. I recently had the buzz recall performed on my Freerunner and had them install Android. I was pretty disappointed with android because I was not able to send and receive text messages and documentation is scant at best. I was eventually able to send text messages but not receive them. This led me to abandon Android. Right now, SHR Unstable makes receives phone calls/text messages and wakes from suspend fairly reliably. I am unable to get GPS to work and GPRS tends to lock things up. Also the Wifi is iffy. These bugs, though annoying, still allow me to use the phone. I think getting the device to have a stable gprs connection is the next big step. Great work guys. Review of Om2009 release 4 freerunner recall
So I've been using the latest testing build of Om2009 release 4. This build is the most stable release I've tested to date provided all you use it for is phone calls. Paroli seems fairly stable. I wanted to point out a couple of things. 1. Previously I complained about the buzz issue. I just got an email notifying that my Freerunner has a hardware defect and they are doing a recall to rectify the situation. I have a a5 hardware revision. If this really is the problem, then this complaint may be moot. 2. Parolli occasionally will become unresponsive after a call/sms message (This was listed as a bug) 3. Using GPRS will cause the phone to crash after a couple of minutes. Once I turn this on, I have to restart in order to use the telephone features again 4. The UI seems sluggish, typing, bringing up menus, etc. 5. Using GPS (TangoGPS) causes xglamo to eat cpu. 6. (parolli) Call Log/SMS does not elegantly handle the prepended 1 in phone numbers. This causes contacts without the prepended 1 to not be associated. This release is a good start. When these bugs are ironed out, it'll be a great foundation to build an app library on. -- Paul Email - pault...@gmail.com There were moments when he looked on evil simply as a mode through which he could realize his conception of the beautiful. My point in selling now is to try to not get screwed a second time when OM drops support for it, like they did for the GTA01 last month. C If you think it's such a great phone, why not buy it from me for full price? Clearly if it's so great, you'll have no problem re-selling it. Didn't think so... I didn't buy this phone as a gadget to work on for months that MIGHT eventually make a nice GPS. For half the price I could have gotten a real open source kit and the parts to put together something like this, minus GSM. Something with a REAL SDK, fully open and STABLE source, and support from the company that sold it to me. I bought this to use as a phone that I could get into, add to, and modify if I wanted to. That's how FIC marketed it, as a consumer ready device, open source, with MAYBE a small power issue in that it wasn't supporting stand by mode. OM wasn't it's own entity, or if it was that wasn't made clear. Now FIC has shifted ALL responsibility off to OM. OM says they're not focused on the GTA02, but are marketing to future phones, like the GTA03. They've also completely dropped support for the GTA01. And core functionality on ALL Neos, like making and receiving calls and SMS, is still unreliable. The FreeRunner wasn't marketed as a prototype device. It was marketed as consumer ready, and it's not there, and doesn't appear to be getting there any time soon, if at all. Saying OM never said the software was ready doesn't change how it was marketed, or the fact that OM was initially formed and funded by FIC to develop software for it's phone. I'm just pissed off that I spent $400 on a device that was supposed to be my next phone, and 8 months later it's still sitting in a box because it's not usable as a normal daily phone. And it doesn't help that people keep saying the FreeRunner was marketed as a development platform, when it clearly wasn't. ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support -- Paul Email - pault...@gmail.com There were moments when he looked on evil simply as a mode through which he could realize his conception of the beautiful. Here's an unorthodox approach. Have you tried removing the battery and plugging in the USB into a computer and the OM? This brings up the Boot for me. Once the boot menu is showing, put the battery in, and then cycle through the menu for two to three mins before attempting to boot (choose the boot option from menu). I think this gives the battery time to charge up a bit before trying to boot. If you mute either the mic or the earpiece there is no echo. If you use the wired headset there is no echo. The level of echo is affected by both the mic gain and the earpiece level. Re: Sad Story
Seeing the responses to criticism, it is clear why OpenMoko is where it is today. If a significant portion of the community is frustrated at the status of this project, the best course of action is to address the concerns of the community. Does telling people to buy an iphone accomplish anything but lower your social standing on this list? The main reason of why Open Source works is because people are able to criticize. When the criticisms are taken into account, real progress can be had. We as a community were warned of the alpha status of the phone. What we expected was that the community and company would work hand in hand to create a viable phone solution. Yet, it is clear that the resolve of the Company is waning and the rest of the community is left holding the bag. Now we have people blaming us because we are holding the bag. Just because a project is Open Source, doesn't guarantee its success. We have a lot of people working hard to resolve issues, yet we haven't achieved our goal. We need to refocus our goals and objectives to create a working phone. Passing the buck to FSO is passing the torch to someone else. This is what OM has done. Re: Sad Story
My experience, as I'm sure with many other people, with my freerunner has been frustrating most of the time. To say, its all on the user is wrong. Granted the community could be better, however, its hard to contribute when everything is so fragmented. For instance, about the echo problem, one of the developers for OpenMoko stated Since there are different hw versions out there (a5, a6, a7), it's impossible to provide one alsa state file that suits all models. Wait a sec. If the developers know the issues, What's preventing the if statement that would prevent hundreds of hours of tweaking, testing, and frustration for the community? Let's be honest here FIC is making a pretty penny off of OpenMoko, using very old hardware selling at a premium price (2.5g not even EDGE). Yet we are OK with that. What the community DOES expect is basic support, for starters a phone that makes calls without echoing, doesn't drop connection and sends and receives text messages reliably as the Number 1 priority. If I'm not mistaken, the majority of the working code in OpenMoko is from Trolltech. In addition FSO has a very nice distro and the Freerunner isn't even its main device. Yet more than 1 year AFTER the release of the 1974, we still have MAJOR issues from a basic install of Om. Then we read stuff like this. OM is moving more focus to gta03 now, so my current resource for qtopia is fairly limited. It becomes evident that FIC and Openmoko cares less about creating reliably working software then it does about moving products. (not blaming the developers here, they get pressure) Follow the next link and I think I've made my case. http://www.cafepress.com/openmoko_inc Now with that said, I will be posting online my howtos including scripts to make a kinda stable variant of FDOM soon. Re: GSM Dropping
Thank you Alastair, I believe the latest OM version is 2008.9, which was released well before the bug was patched. I am unable to find the daily builds of OM, are they available? I have been unable to get gsm0710muxd working properly yet, I believe this is necessary for me to install minicom in order to input the AT commands. So I'm guessing inputing AT%SLEEP=2 is a simple solution, I need to get to where I can input the command. Try this. Put the battery in. Hold down the Aux button and plug in the usb cable into a computer. You should see a boot menu. Try booting from there. Distro Reviews
I finally received my Freerunner and it's been exciting. I am trying to use the Freerunner as my primary phone. My First goal is to start with a stable phone distro. One where I can make/receive calls, send and receive text messages. The Qtopia build seems to be OK, however, there is that echo issue. Qtopia does seem to be removed from a lot of the feature developments for the FreeRunner. I have tried a couple of the distros out there and the Qtopia one seems to be the most stable. I was wondering, which distros have the Echo bug resolved? Also, is the debian distro stable? I am a debian/kubuntu user so I definitely would like to use debian provided it can provide a stable phone for me. I need to buy a new sd card from the sound of it though.
