If you have the engineering know-how, it should be possible to replace the wireless module, but this is a Big Change and would require a recertification of the phone. To be clear: this entails changing the chip, the main board, the antenna and hoping that you don't have to code a new driver for this. With Qtmoko, I think MP3's were native; I would not presume that there is sufficient processing power avaliable to playback an AAC file. Hi Friends, did you never hear about gta04.org? It is exactly what you are proposing. And it exists for more than 2 years and is well supported by QtMoko and others. The only drawback at the moment is that they are sold out. -- hns Am 15.10.2012 um 18:53 schrieb François-Léonard Gilbert: If you have the engineering know-how, it should be possible to replace the wireless module, but this is a Big Change and would require a recertification of the phone. If anyone are interested in my freerunner I do not want much for it. 40 Euros + shipping. Is that a fair price? I would like to have some money for it, but you can get it for free from MJ Fahmi. I do not think you have much to loose there as you just have to pay shipping :-) About mine: It is used, a while ago it was used as my daily phone, now it has just been inactive for one year maybe. It works fine, it has installed Android at the moment. There is a protective film in front of the screen, a little worn. This is included in the package. - Original box - charger - battery - 4gb memory card (can be included if interested) - OpenMoko sleve Anything more that I have forgotten? Original stylus is sadly enough broken :-( I am located in Norway and has as mentioned a sister who might be off to Switzerland in near future. Zürich I think it is. If this is close I guess she can hand it over. Anyway. This is an used item but in good condition. Same boat, east cost, near Niagara Falls/Rochester area, NY/USA. And before a thousand people from NYC chime in, no we can't meet up for you to get it. Rochester is 6+ hours away from the city. Mine is an A5 with buzz fix applied. Has Android on it right now and works reasonably well, but never really made it to being my daily phone as the bluetooth headset stuff never did work right in any distro. Original box, charger, stylus, 2 batteries, 2G card, AND external GPS antenna w/ proper connector. I wound up getting an N900, which was a hair closer to my needs over all. Would consider gifting it (free) to a college kid with interest time to develop for it. Otherwise, a small amount for it would be awesome. -Woody Paul pault...@gmail.com wrote: = I too have a free runner, i live in the US. I'm willing to let it go cheaply. Thanks anyway! The Calypso in the OpenMokos has two serial interfaces. One is connected to the cpu and appears as /dev/ttySAC0, and the other is connected to the headset jack socket. According to their wiki[1][2] osmocon connects to the calypso through either of these serial ports, and provides a socket interface. If you run osmocon on the phone the obvious port to use is /dev/ttySAC0. If you were running osmocon on a separate machine you would connect via the headphone jack instead, just as you would for most of the other supported handsets[3]. The debug board contains a USB serial interface that can be used to connect to the headset jack socket[4], so when you mentioned the debug board I assumed you were using this method. You know, folks, I think it's time to admit that the Openmoko project was a failure, and move on. It was a great idea and a lot of us supported it with our money as well as our time, but the device as eventually sold was poorly designed and badly implemented. Even the people who bought it after several rounds of hardware bug-fixes got a clunky device with pathetic battery-life. Since the hardware is crap, it's not surprising that software developers didn't exactly flock to it. Trying to make it usable is flogging a dead horse. Re: Openmoko (was Re: Login screen on firmware upgradation)
Failure? Not at all. Openmoko, the project, helped to spin a lot of important movements throughout the industry, and, even more important, Openmoko Inc., the company, brought the first truly hackable mobile phone hardware into the hands of 'everyone'. That's a major achievement and I even go so far to say it's undisputable. Yes, the hardware was not perfect, and yes, due to a bunch of management failures combined with the economic crisis a couple of years ago, there is no more mobile phone hardware coming from Openmoko Inc. To say that Openmoko, the project, has no future is far from the truth and we can see that every day watching the action happening on free hard- and software projects all around the globe, such as GTA04, FSO, SHR, QtMoko. Yes, much of the action has moved from the Openmoko devices to newer devices, such as the HTC phones, Palm Pre, Nokia N900, etc., but again, hardware ages, that's a given, and by no means a fault of Openmoko Inc., the company. Gave up for how long, Gave up for perhaps a half a year? Om2008 was already listed as 'dead', as I best recall, which is part of why I was trying to update the OS in the first place. I was originally planning to go for the last Om release, so that I could bootstrap to something active, but I couldn't ever get the networking to work (to the phone from my computer works, to the internet from my computer works, routing between the two never did). and is the assumption you were using the Neo as a primary cell phone until you got the alternate the reason for not changing sooner? Yes. I'm not going to say that it worked well (badly enough that I've wished often they'd aimed at making the initial distro a PDA distro instead of a phone distro, in fact, since minimal functionality is more likely to wind up full-featured), but it was what I had, and I could do texts (which is all I was, or am, interested in). The reason I ask is that OM2008 is deprecated and no longer developed hence updates probably won't work[1]. It did work for me as a distro but I didn't keep it installed for very long. You also you mention trying a new distro yet the subject is Updating OM2008 over mingw/ssh. I suppose I should have said 'Replace', but I'm currently working under the assumption that I'll have to load some stuff onto the phone to bootstrap from. I've tried the SD card method (haven't managed to figure that out), the flashing method (ditto), Where are you getting stuck? It would help if you could provide more information regarding this. As far as I could tell, the actual reading wasn't working at all, and without a working duplicate I'm not willing to actually flash the phone. I can read over ssh (I think with scp?), which I used to customize the network connection (futile effort), but I'm on a Windows box, and don't have the utilities to pack all of that into a jffs2 image. As for SD, until recently I didn't have an SD card reader/writer, so SD took me back to dfu-util. Even now, I don't have a Windows program capable of dealing with non-Windows partitions. Also, when I went to buy a larger SD card I didn't take enough notes along, and wound up with one of the ones that require a kernel/bootloader switch (and I don't even know where those are, so changing them for the next boot is pretty much impossible). I also wasn't ever clear on where to flash to/from, due to the fact that I don't know the naming convention of the various partitions of NAND and SD that everything's stored on, which is a big part of why I don't want to flash. A few times I've started to load the SD card from within the Freerunner itself (Windows might not be able to deal with Ext partitions, but surely Om2008 can, right?), but ignoring the SD card compatibility issue, I don't know which partitions to load with what, what to mount first, and how to confirm that I actually succeeded in the initial mounting. Any info on that ( and the partition naming scheme ) that you can provide is much appreciated. Which phone do you have (1973/FreeRunner) Freerunner, otherwise I probably would have bought a debug board, and I likely would have just force-fed something down the phone's throat by now. which distro are you trying where are you getting stuck? It's likely possible to accomplish doing so on the SD card or NAND if you've booted to a working distro that isn't on the target medium and doesn't require the target mounted to run. It's a far more complex task than using dfu-util[4] to install and I've never tried it. Gentoo anyone? As for recommendations Android on Freerunner is probably the easiest method for and will likely require an SD card 512MB. I've used it in the past and found the 1.5 version to be pretty good. You should be able to accomplish setting up an SD card with AoF fairly easily on a Windows PC. It will wipe the NAND, install a new bootloader and take a while on first boot. Backup your contacts by hand if necessary because they'll all be gone for good. If you do manage to figure out dfu-util then that opens up other options like SHR or Qtmoko. Both of these are good distros that are actively maintained. Nothing involving writing to SD card, or flashing, or bridging/etc. network connections, please; I want to figure that out AFTER I update the OS, NOT before. As far as I know this is not possible without substantial effort and skill. If anyone else thinks I'm wrong please correct me. Re: GPS stopped working, can't figure it out... what else?
Dear all: Was there ever any resolution on this thread regarding the loss of GPS functionality? I seem to be having the seemingly identical problem as of last Saturday. Last Saturday, my Freerunner's GPS seemed to stop working, and I have been struggling to debug it since. I've enabled the device with the dbus interface: # mdbus -s org.freedesktop.Gypsy /org/freedesktop/Gypsy org.freesmartphone.Resource.Enable And the a variety of activity flies across the frameworkd.log. Interestingly, it looks like ogpsd actually does have a fix... at least this line: 2010.10.01 01:39:08.43 ogpsdDEBUGGot UBX packet of type NAV-POSLLH: [{'LON': -123xxx, 'HMSL': 28843, 'HEIGHT': 11546, 'ITOW': 463141000, 'LAT': 48xxx, 'Vacc': 98976, 'Hacc': 98976}] shows my exact position (obscurred for some level of privacy). However, when I query the position with the DBUS interface, I get nothing: # mdbus -s org.freedesktop.Gypsy /org/freedesktop/Gypsy org.freedesktop.Gypsy.Position.GetPosition (0, 0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0) tangogps and foxtrotgps both fail to find any GPS. Which is extremely frustrating, because tangogps was until this point the one useful thing that I have ever managed to get my Freerunner to do (and I use the GPS extensively). Does anyone have any advice? FWIW I'm running debian: # cat /proc/version Linux version 2.6.29-20100313.git973a41fc (r...@neo) (gcc version 4.4.5 20100728 (prerelease) (Debian 4.4.4-8) ) #1 Sat Aug 7 17:45:57 GMT-3 2010 ~James On Mon, Jul 12, 2010 at 07:24:49PM +0100, Al Johnson wrote: On Monday 12 July 2010, Yaroslav Halchenko wrote: On Mon, 12 Jul 2010, Al Johnson wrote: fso-gpsd is a level removed from the gps, so isn't much use for debugging. Otoh you have to check other logfiles as they will grow until your fs is full. cd /var ; rm -f log ; mkdir log Modify /etc/syslog.conf, change some lines to these: DESTINATION=file # log destinations (buffer file remote) LOGFILE=/var/log/messages # file: where to log ROTATESIZE=512 # file: rotate log if grown beyond X [kByte] (busybox 1.2+) ROTATEGENS=5# file: keep X generations of rotated logs (busybox 1.2+) Then killall -HUP syslogd. You will see a file /var/log/messages. Let it shutdown and look into messages after a new boot. ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support
