Re: Some questions about the freerunne

2012-10-15 Thread François-Léonard Gilbert
If you have the engineering know-how, it should be possible to replace the
wireless module, but this is a Big Change and would require a
recertification of the phone. To be clear: this entails changing the chip,
the main board, the antenna and hoping that you don't have to code a new
driver for this.
With Qtmoko, I think MP3's were native; I would not presume that there is
sufficient processing power avaliable to playback an AAC file.

Hi Friends,
did you never hear about gta04.org?

It is exactly what you are proposing. And it exists for more than 2 years and
is well supported by QtMoko and others.
The only drawback at the moment is that they are sold out.

You might be interested in OpenPhoenux project though - I think it may
be called Openmoko successor.

Check http://gta04.org/ - mainboard upgrade for Freerunner. It may be
better choice for you than plain old FR. But it may be that it's not -
for instance, I guess RMS would choose Freerunner, as it doesn't need
closed wifi firmware to be loaded into chipset by OS ;)

If anyone are interested in my freerunner I do not want much for it.
40 Euros + shipping. Is that a fair price?

I would like to have some money for it, but you can get it for free from MJ
Fahmi. I do not think you have much to loose there as you just have to pay
shipping :-)

About mine:
It is used, a while ago it was used as my daily phone, now it has just been
inactive for one year maybe.
It works fine, it has installed Android at the moment.

There is a protective film in front of the screen, a little worn.
This is included in the package.

- Original box
- charger
- battery
- 4gb memory card (can be included if interested)
- OpenMoko sleve

Anything more that I have forgotten?

Original stylus is sadly enough broken :-(

I am located in Norway and has as mentioned a sister who might be off to
Switzerland in near future. Zürich I think it is. If this is close I guess
she can hand it over.

Anyway. This is an used item but in good condition.

Take the free one if you'd like to only pay for the shipping :-)

Same boat, east cost, near Niagara Falls/Rochester area, NY/USA.

And before a thousand people from NYC chime in, no we can't meet up for you to
get it. Rochester is 6+ hours away from the city.

Mine is an A5 with buzz fix applied. Has Android on it right now and works
reasonably well, but never really made it to being my daily phone as the
bluetooth headset stuff never did work right in any distro. Original box,
charger, stylus, 2 batteries, 2G card, AND external GPS antenna w/ proper
connector.

I wound up getting an N900, which was a hair closer to my needs over all.
Would consider gifting it (free) to a college kid with interest time to
develop for it. Otherwise, a small amount for it would be awesome.

but this doesn't work when opimd is still in the stage of reading SMSs from
SIM - it simply returns only the messages that were already loaded from SIM.

There is another tool that looks might help: the signal
org.freesmartphone.PIM.Messages.NewMessage, which seems to be emitted when a
 message is loaded.

To accomplish the task, one can thus combine these two methods, ie.
 1. Start listening to the signal org.freesmartphone.PIM.Messages.NewMessage
 and saving all results.
 2. Do org.freesmartphone.PIM.Messages.Query {} and save results. Each
message obtained this way must be checked for duplicity (to prevent the
situation that some of the NewMessage signals were received after we did
step 1. and before we did step 2.).

My question is: is there any easier way to get all messages from opimd (ie.
without the need to checking for duplicit messages)? (It would be sufficient
to wait until all messages are loaded from SIM to opimd and then do
org.freesmartphone.PIM.Messages.Query {} - but is there any way to figure
out whether all messsages are loaded from SIM to opimd?)

 With regards,

opimd doesn't read messages from SIM for a looong time. Which version
do you use?
Also, using opimd with mdbus can be problematic. For CLI usage there
is opimd-cli python script in [1] which should do exactly what you
want. It should be available in repo as opimd-utils-cli (IIRC).

hello again!
I try to explain myself better.

In a SHR distro I have a:
A) bootloader: there are two diferents: qi with a
udfu extension and uboot with .bin extension
B) kernel: usually named uImage.bin
C) a filesystem: there are two possibilities: a om-gta02.tar.gz and
om-gta02.jffs2

I unpacked om-gta02.tar.gz on shr2011.raw

and I tried to run it with Qemu but it haven't worked

My questions are:
-How can I get a initrd file from the files I have? Can I get it from
the SHR running on the phone?
- How can I boot the SHR on qemu? where is the place of the bootloader?
or why haven't started the kernel with:
$ qemu-system-arm -kernel uImage.bin -hda shr2011.raw

First I thought that It was better to follow the method of the wiki
because it promise a more similar device.
Now I think try it with normal qemu, but is the first time that I use
qemu for emulate a non-x86 machine and I'm not sure how to do it

 level
shifted to 3.3V, and connecting that to the Calypso serial interface through
 the headset jack?

No... I do not fully understand your question, which probably means
I'm not trying THAT :)

What I understand now, is that for my purpose (running osmocon on

The Calypso in the OpenMokos has two serial interfaces. One is connected to
the cpu and appears as /dev/ttySAC0, and the other is connected to the headset
jack socket.

According to their wiki[1][2] osmocon connects to the calypso through either
of these serial ports, and provides a socket interface. If you run osmocon on
the phone the obvious port to use is /dev/ttySAC0. If you were running osmocon
on a separate machine you would connect via the headphone jack instead, just
as you would for most of the other supported handsets[3]. The debug board
contains a USB serial interface that can be used to connect to the headset
jack socket[4], so when you mentioned the debug board I assumed you were using
this method.

You know, folks, I think it's time to admit that the Openmoko project was a
failure, and move on.

It was a great idea and a lot of us supported it with our money as well as our
time, but the device as eventually sold was poorly designed and badly
implemented. Even the people who bought it after several rounds of hardware
bug-fixes got a clunky device with pathetic battery-life. Since the hardware is
crap, it's not surprising that software developers didn't exactly flock to it.
Trying to make it usable is flogging a dead horse.

The nearest thing we will get to an open cellphone will probably be something
made by Samsung, Motorola, or one of the other big consumer-device companies,
running Android.

I don't want to offend people, but I think it's time somebody came out and said
this. If you want to put your time and effort into Free Software, then pick a

Hi Rijul,
please check that your downloaded image is not corrupted.

You can download and compare it with our copy which we
have used successfully an uncounted number of times:

http://download.goldelico.com/gta02/Moko11/

You must also flash the image on the flat memory card
(e.g. /dev/sdb) and not into a partition (and not /dev/sdb1 or
/dev/sdb2).

To boot from NOR flash, press the AUX button and
then power on. The boot menu should appear within
a second. Choose boot from SD (ext).

Hope this helps,

well, there's probably a lot of people finding _your_ message both
 unneccessary

 - you hijackd a thread completely unrelated to vent your individual

the discussion about om being a failure or not is recurrent and monitoring

Re: Openmoko (was Re: Login screen on firmware upgradation)

2011-03-19 Thread Michael 'Mickey' Lauer
Failure? Not at all. Openmoko, the project, helped to spin a lot of
important movements throughout the industry, and, even more important,
Openmoko Inc., the company, brought the first truly hackable mobile
phone hardware into the hands of 'everyone'. That's a major achievement
and I even go so far to say it's undisputable.

Yes, the hardware was not perfect, and yes, due to a bunch of management
failures combined with the economic crisis a couple of years ago, there
is no more mobile phone hardware coming from Openmoko Inc. To say that
Openmoko, the project, has no future is far from the truth and we can
see that every day watching the action happening on free hard- and
software projects all around the globe, such as GTA04, FSO, SHR, QtMoko.

Yes, much of the action has moved from the Openmoko devices to newer
devices, such as the HTC phones, Palm Pre, Nokia N900, etc., but again,
hardware ages, that's a given, and by no means a fault of Openmoko Inc.,
the company.

Cheers,

There is a page for gprs + usb, it should be easy to adopt that for wlan:

  (2) Is it possible to cause Freerunner to serve as a WiFI AP (linked
to Internet via USB thru PC)? How?

There is some software at http://hostap.epitest.fi/ - I don't if it
works with the Freerunner hardware.

  (3) Cause Freerunner-USB-PC chain to act as a bridge between wireless

There's a package bridge-utils, but it's not available for SHR. You
could borrow it from the debian armel package.

AP mode is not possible but you can run FR in ad-hoc mode which is
almost the same for clients.

I don't think bridging works with wifi.

remember that WSOD is triggered by race condition, thus it may be
dependant on hardware. You may suffer it more then I do.

Yes, I saw this video, but it looked different than mine. It seemed that

When my WSOD occurred, I still can login ssh with usb network, and can play

I thought the causes of my WSOD is:
One data-driven errors on LCD interface, and following data
misunderstand.
and the way to fix it: (do this after waking black screen up)
Pull-down the RST# pin of LCD interface, and send initialization datas
again as power on do.

I have not learned to linux driver programming, so can't do it my self, hope
it fixed next kernel by yours. Thanks.

Gave up for perhaps a half a year? Om2008 was already listed as
'dead', as I best recall, which is part of why I was trying to update
the OS in the first place. I was originally planning to go for the
last Om release, so that I could bootstrap to something active, but I
couldn't ever get the networking to work (to the phone from my
computer works, to the internet from my computer works, routing
between the two never did).

and is the assumption you were using the Neo as a
primary cell phone until you got the alternate the reason for not
 changing sooner?
Yes. I'm not going to say that it worked well (badly enough that I've
wished often they'd aimed at making the initial distro a PDA distro
instead of a phone distro, in fact, since minimal functionality is
more likely to wind up full-featured), but it was what I had, and I
could do texts (which is all I was, or am, interested in).

The reason I ask is that OM2008 is deprecated and no
longer developed hence updates probably won't work[1]. It did work for
me as a distro but I didn't keep it installed for very long. You also
you mention trying a new distro yet the subject is Updating OM2008 over
 mingw/ssh.
I suppose I should have said 'Replace', but I'm currently working
under the assumption that I'll have to load some stuff onto the phone
to bootstrap from.

I've tried the SD card method (haven't
managed to figure that out), the flashing method (ditto),

Where are you getting stuck? It would help if you could provide more
 information regarding this.
As far as I could tell, the actual reading wasn't working at all, and
without a working duplicate I'm not willing to actually flash the
phone. I can read over ssh (I think with scp?), which I used to
customize the network connection (futile effort), but I'm on a Windows
box, and don't have the utilities to pack all of that into a jffs2
image.

As for SD, until recently I didn't have an SD card reader/writer, so
SD took me back to dfu-util. Even now, I don't have a Windows program
capable of dealing with non-Windows partitions. Also, when I went to
buy a larger SD card I didn't take enough notes along, and wound up
with one of the ones that require a kernel/bootloader switch (and I
don't even know where those are, so changing them for the next boot is
pretty much impossible).

I also wasn't ever clear on where to flash to/from, due to the fact
that I don't know the naming convention of the various partitions of
NAND and SD that everything's stored on, which is a big part of why I
don't want to flash.

A few times I've started to load the SD card from within the
Freerunner itself (Windows might not be able to deal with Ext
partitions, but surely Om2008 can, right?), but ignoring the SD card
compatibility issue, I don't know which partitions to load with what,
what to mount first, and how to confirm that I actually succeeded in
the initial mounting. Any info on that ( and the partition naming
scheme ) that you can provide is much appreciated.

Which phone do you have (1973/FreeRunner)
Freerunner, otherwise I probably would have bought a debug board, and
I likely would have just force-fed something down the phone's throat
by now.

which distro are you trying where are you getting stuck?
I initially got stuck on the update/upgrade scripts that I understand
shipped with the Freerunner (I recall that the scripts actually did
TRY to work). As far as I can tell, it was a networking problem, but I
was never able to determine WHERE said problem exists.

 Is the machine
you're using to do the install a Windows PC[3]?
Yes, hence Mingw (note: the text-prompt, not the X client (whoever
first used the terminology like that should be taken out and shot) ).

  and the
download method (difficult when you can't get to the net at all on
  the phone).

Sorry, don't know of any download method used other than updating a
preexisting install so I can't help you there.
That was the initial one that I tried, but if that hadn't worked but
the network did then I would have just started grabbing things from
online to jury-rig however much functionality it took to install new
distros the normal way.

But I know that I can at least READ FROM the phone with
SSH, because I've done that successfully before (and I seem to have
accidentally replacedt some stuff too... oops). So, what do I need
to do to accomplish an 'in place' upgrade, and which distro would

In place as in while the phone is running using it to install another
OS? It's likely possible to accomplish doing so on the SD card or NAND
if you've booted to a working distro that isn't on the target medium and
doesn't require the target mounted to run. It's a far more complex task
than using dfu-util[4] to install and I've never tried it. Gentoo
anyone?

As for recommendations Android on Freerunner is probably the easiest
method for and will likely require an SD card 512MB. I've used it in
the past and found the 1.5 version to be pretty good. You should be
able to accomplish setting up an SD card with AoF fairly easily on a
Windows PC. It will wipe the NAND, install a new bootloader and take a
while on first boot. Backup your contacts by hand if necessary because
they'll all be gone for good.

If you do manage to figure out dfu-util then that opens up other
options like SHR or Qtmoko. Both of these are good distros that are
actively maintained.

Nothing involving writing to SD card, or flashing, or bridging/etc.
network connections, please; I want to figure that out AFTER I
  update the OS, NOT before.

As far as I know this is not possible without substantial effort and
skill. If anyone else thinks I'm wrong please correct me. Jared, it
sounds like you're in over your head on this one if you haven't been
successful using dfu-util. I'd honestly recommend looking for a LUG
locally[5] for some hands on help. I'm pretty sure using the subject
line help me with my neo 1973/freerunner should garner responses from
interested parties.

Good Luck,

Brian

Maybe you u-boot environment is damaged?

The dmesg output does appear when I'm using the SHR-unstable.

That's my favorite way of flashing a new kernel:

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd3
nandwrite -p /dev/mtd3 kermel_image

Use mtd6 for flashing a new rootfs. With dfu-util it's way too slow.

wiki pages but is there a way to flash a new kernel to the NAND through a
distribution working on the SD card?

That's my favorite way of flashing a new kernel:

 flash_eraseall /dev/mtd3
 nandwrite -p /dev/mtd3 kermel_image

Use mtd6 for flashing a new rootfs. With dfu-util it's way too slow.

I eventually managed to flash the kernel through dfu-util on windows.

Can you still boot the system in nand? If yes, check dmesg output for 2 things:

The kernel commandline should look similar to this:

[0.00] Kernel command line: rootfstype=jffs2
root=/dev/mtdblock6 console=ttySAC2,115200 console=tty0 loglevel=4
regular_boot

And somewhat later:

[1.30] 6 cmdlinepart partitions found on MTD device neo1973-nand
[1.305000] Creating 6 MTD partitions on neo1973-nand:
[1.305000] 0x-0x0004 : u-boot

NOR u-boot never had a partition named Kernel it is named kernel.

SHR uses fso-gpsd. There is no need to use hexdump for /dev/gps, it's
just ascii. You could also use gpspipe -r to watch the data (comes
with gps-utils).

Two other things he could try:

- remove the persist data: rm -f
/etc/freesmartphone/persist/ogpsd.pickle and try again, you should
receive valid data outside a building within 4 minutes

- get some assist data from u-blox, see
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_FreeRunner_GPS
This gives you valid data within 30 seconds

Re: GPS stopped working, can't figure it out... what else?

2010-10-01 Thread James Hiebert
Dear all:

Was there ever any resolution on this thread regarding the loss of GPS
functionality? I seem to be having the seemingly identical problem as of
last Saturday. Last Saturday, my Freerunner's GPS seemed to stop working,
and I have been struggling to debug it since.

I've enabled the device with the dbus interface:
# mdbus -s org.freedesktop.Gypsy /org/freedesktop/Gypsy
org.freesmartphone.Resource.Enable

And the a variety of activity flies across the frameworkd.log.
Interestingly, it looks like ogpsd actually does have a fix... at least this
line:

2010.10.01 01:39:08.43 ogpsdDEBUGGot UBX packet of type
NAV-POSLLH: [{'LON': -123xxx, 'HMSL': 28843, 'HEIGHT': 11546, 'ITOW':
463141000, 'LAT': 48xxx, 'Vacc': 98976, 'Hacc': 98976}]

shows my exact position (obscurred for some level of privacy). However,
when I query the position with the DBUS interface, I get nothing:

# mdbus -s org.freedesktop.Gypsy /org/freedesktop/Gypsy
org.freedesktop.Gypsy.Position.GetPosition
(0, 0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0)

tangogps and foxtrotgps both fail to find any GPS. Which is extremely
frustrating, because tangogps was until this point the one useful thing that
I have ever managed to get my Freerunner to do (and I use the GPS
extensively).

Does anyone have any advice? FWIW I'm running debian:
# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.29-20100313.git973a41fc (r...@neo) (gcc version 4.4.5
20100728 (prerelease) (Debian 4.4.4-8) ) #1 Sat Aug 7 17:45:57 GMT-3 2010

To get closer to the solution, you could change /var/log into a
permanent (other than volatile) directory and direct the syslog into
a file so that you have the files across reboots. Otoh you have to
check other logfiles as they will grow until your fs is full.

cd /var ; rm -f log ; mkdir log

Modify /etc/syslog.conf, change some lines to these:

DESTINATION=file # log destinations (buffer file remote)
LOGFILE=/var/log/messages # file: where to log
ROTATESIZE=512 # file: rotate log if grown beyond X
[kByte] (busybox 1.2+)
ROTATEGENS=5 # file: keep X generations of rotated
logs (busybox 1.2+)

Then killall -HUP syslogd. You will see a file /var/log/messages.
Let it shutdown and look into messages after a new boot.

Re: Freerunner shuts down every 8 min

 Hi.

My Freerunner (SHR Illume) has started to shut down after running approx 8
min. I have no idea why this is happening. I haven't installed anything on
the FR. SHR install is 6 months old and has worked fine until the last 3
 weeks.

I just wanted to hear if anybody else has had this experience and if it
could be related to SHR or the Freerunner itself.

In the meantime I'll try to flash with a new SHR install, to see what
happens. This is really getting annoying.

ROTATEGENS=5# file: keep X generations of rotated
logs (busybox 1.2+)

Then killall -HUP syslogd. You will see a file /var/log/messages.
Let it shutdown and look into messages after a new boot.

Does anyone noticed this bug: http://bugs.qtmoko.org/view.php?id=175
on QtMoko v26? I am trying to figure out if this is my local problem or
 something wider.

jffs2 does not support mmap flags used by apt-get afaik.

If you don't want to loose time flashing your neo and restoring backups
of everything, you can update your QtMoko installation using standard
debian process.
Most likely they mean:
# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade

After upgrade to v26 you may be hit by this bug:
http://bugs.qtmoko.org/view.php?id=175
if so, please report.
