There is a 3rd possibility that the number used to send the messages is
blocked, this is particularly likely if the number you are sending to is a
North American number as American/Canadian networks don't like messages from
automated sources which can't be tracked back to an individual.

I am looking for easy to see away status indicator/icon for irc
channel user list, however can not find a way to turn it on in any
options or plugins.
Away status is available in rightclick-info panel and status changes
can be seen in main window messages but this does not give instant
overview.
I am using Pidgin version 2.10.7 through PortableApps.com (on a thumb
drive). I can connect with Pidgin to all other accounts except Google
Talk. This is the error message in the debug window:

Can you provide some information about the service you are using?
For example, are you using Pidgin at work? Are you using it to connect to
AIM, Google Talk, Facebook?
Generally speaking, you can change how your name appears to yourself
(Accounts, Manage, Modify, Local Alias).

available and it switches to a small clock icon when they are away.
Are you not observing this behavior?

Depending on your network configuration, port 5222 may be blocked.
Can you change some settings and see if this helps? This has helped me

Since you are using a Yahoo address, you will likely need to contact Yahoo
for this.

Sorry, here is one more scenario:
- If you are using Pidgin in Bonjour mode, you can simply specify
your own username in the preferences.
(From my experience this is unique to ONLY the Bonjour environment).
