Since facebook-plugin is available for Pidgin my Pidgin-Contact list is pretty
full (few hundred). So I made
If you use XMPP/Jabber for Facebook it should automatically sort them
based on your 'lists' setup within Facebook. No need to do anything
client side.

On (servers on) protocols that allow you to organize your buddy list the
group information is stored on the server and you only need to do it once.
Unforunately that isn't the case for facebook using either the plugin or
the XMPP interface. The plugin cannot store that information on the server
