I assume that this is currently fixed as of SeaMonkey 2.33; you could
make the case to get the patch uplifted to 2.32 but it might be too late
to get it into 2.31 though.

Thanks. I'm an SM only guy and have no idea how versions
coincide/relate from TB to SM. The bug report says Target Milestone:
Thunderbird 36.0

But a comment in bug 558931 says fix for bug 970456 will be in
Thunderbird 31.0 .

If all that translates to SM 2.33, then I thank you, Neil, for the info.

GW

Geoff, I'm not sure how TB versions fit in (I think they're the same as
FF), but to convert FF ver to SM ver, I add the two bits together then
add one, i.e. SM 2:30 gives 2 + 30 + 1 = FF 33

Are you talking about the Search Box to the right of the
My-On-Demand?? I can see that in my Linux installed SM.

Not here in SM 2.30/Win7 Pro SP1.

I figured out why I didn't see a search form box. It is because of my
minimum font size set to 13 (12 and none worked). I hate tiny font
sizes. :( Are you using the same minimum font size?

My minimum font size is set to 12pt.

So changing to 13 or higher will show the search form box gone on
yours?

I just went into Prefs, set 14 as my minimum font size, re-booted SM,
and clicked the link . and had no search bar. :-(

I wonder if the pages' code is set so that the search bar is on the very
right limit of the page, so that any increase in the font size causes
the search box to extend past the edge of the page, and so not be shown
at all??

(If anyone is interested in having a look, the Search appears in line
159 of the code.)

In that case, would you not see a horizontal scroll bar?

Not if CSS overflow property is set to hidden at some level - which it
is for div class=divider, which ultimately contains the Search box.
That causes any content which doesn't fit into the specified box to be
clipped, without a scrollbar.

Mark.

Thanks for this explanation, Mark.

Yes, known issue. You should be making regular _complete_ backups of
your entire profile folder. If need be you can simply restore from
the
backup the places.sqlite file into the profile folder to restore
bookmarks and history.

You can also export bookmarks as HTML and import that file to restore
them. Note that importing appends rather than replacing.

Thanks Ed EE for your helpful replies.
I had tried the HTML route and wondered why is did not behave as I
expected to replace a deleted bookmark.

My initial objective was to move the established bookmarks from one
machine to another when I discovered the problem.

Would simply copying the places.sqlite file into the second machine work
OK or do I need to do the HTML import method and edit out duplicates?

Is fixing the restore problem on the SeaMonkey to-do list or in the too
hard pile?

TIA

Bob

Bob, if the restore bookmarks is not working, which it isn't, why not
just Export your current bookmarks as HTML, Copy that bookmarks.html
file to your other computer and then import it there??

Stop relying on the program's export/import functions which don't work.

Sorry, Ed, whilst I'd accept your suggestion to have a back-up, the
export/import method I suggested above *does* work ... it has saved me

Thunderbird only actually ships ESR releases; only beta testers see the

series. Important fixes get cherry-picked to ESR 31 otherwise users

Doesn't work in the latest Firefox either. IE11 shows a print preview

preview so I printed the first of 5 pages. Text is total gibberish.

Here's one clumsy workaround, others may think of something better:

1) Export your current configuration as Bookmarks.HTML. Rename it so you
can identify it, e.g., MangledBookmarks.HTML.

2) With SM closed, copy/paste the backup places.sqlite over the existing
one.

3) Launch SM and import MangledBookmarks.HTML, which should create a
separate bookmark folder.

4) Drag and drop the lost folders back to where you want them. Delete
whatever folders you no longer need.

5) Lather, rinse, repeat. ;-)
