You're almost there.

Don't use Run, use the Windows Explorer.  In the address bar, enter
%APPDATA%\Mozilla then copy the entire Seamonkey folder (including the
profile.ini file) to your transfer media.  You want profile.ini, because
that's where all the pointers are for your profiles (even just one,
because the names of profile folders are deliberately cryptic).

Then, on the new machine, do the same thing in reverse, copying the
Seamonkey folder to %APPDATA%\Mozilla .

I do this one routinely, each time I install an upgraded version of
Seamonkey, i.e., copy my profile data to a temporary folder, then
install the latest update. And if there's problems with the update, I
can copy the data back in from the temporary folder.

I've never had problems with upgrades, but making a backup this way is

Several thoughts, with indirect reference to other comments made in this
thread...

Overall, your hardware specs are fine, and if you have broadband access,
you don't really need much in the way of cache.  Personally, I run my
own at 10 MB, and I sometimes do Firefox configs as low as 5 MB.  And as
has been suggested, even setting to zero isn't necessarily a problem.

I'm inclined to believe that your problem is something that's not
Seamonkey itself, but where Seamonkey issues are symptoms of something
else.

As a common troubleshooting thing, I frequently suggest clearing cache
and cookies.  Remember that with broadband connections and Web 2.0, the
browser is seen as much as a tool for running scripts, as it is for
simply rendering HTML content.  If there's stuff in the cache that's
causing freezes, it could be a script that's confused, by trying to take
content from the cache when it should be grabbing new stuff. I think
that clearing the cache is more likely to address your problem than
increasing the cache, and unless you're using dialup connections, I
don't think you gain anything by making the cache larger than the
Seamonkey defaults.

I'm assuming that you've already tried Safe Mode, to see what happens if
you disable all your extensions, but I'll at least note here.

Another step to try would be trying an alternate user profile, where all
the settings are default.  If you get better handling there, then it is
indicative that something in your current profile is amiss.

Some discussion elsewhere in the thread suggests issues with video
handling.  I have found that there are times when it can be appropriate
to disable hardware acceleration for video -- not system-wide (and I not
your stated discomfort with doing Windows registry tweaks), but
disabling acceleration in Seamonkey.  (To do that,  go to  Edit ->
Preferences -> Appearance / Content", uncheck "Use hardware acceleration
when available).

It's possible (although probably not likely) that there could be issues
that relate to your Windows user profile.  As with changing out a
profile in Seamonkey, you could also try seeing if you get the same
issues with a different user ID.

If that's not giving you the results you want, especially if you're
seeing similar issues with freezing in other applications, then I think
you're probably seeing system-related issues.  The first thing that
comes to mind is drivers.  You didn't mention how long you've been
having issues, but if it's within a week or two, a driver update is
definitely a candidate.  Take a look at your history for updates, and if
there's anything that has updated there related to video, you may want
to consider backing out that update, or even going to the Device Manager
and deleting your video driver, and letting Windows redetect.

Even further, it's possible that the last Patch Tuesday update might
have something that's interfering, and you might want to have Windows
uninstall that one.

On additional review of discussion, I see that you're using Win 7, so
that would appear to eliminate Patch Tuesday updates, but drivers could
still be an issue. Win 7 itself isn't an issue.  Besides differences in
drivers and changes in UI, Win 7 isn't significantly different from
either Vista or Win 10.

Given a machine of that apparent vintage, your symptoms might be
indications of hardware issues, especially a failing video card.

One final thought: if you're running your storage at 18% available
capacity, it's effectively full. Although an SSD may be a little more
forgiving than a traditional hard drive, when you're that close, there's
inadequate space for burst demand, and you will be seeing performance
issues with your computer.  I'm doubtful that that is causing your
reported problems, but it's not impossible either.  If you're running a
256 GB drive, then the expectation is that the drive is predominantly
used for system and applications, and that you have minimal amounts of
user data stored there.  You can probably do up to about 50 GB of your
own storage, but very little for digital media content (photos, music,
videos) or archival storage of stuff you want to keep, but that you
don't need to get to every day.  For a 250 GB drive, you'll find much
better overall performance if you get the amount of free space increased
to at least 75 GB, and if you can get to 100 GB of free space, that's
even better.

Freeing space might or might not affect your video issues, but doing so
will help overall performance. In that context, expanding your cache
might actually compound problems by increasing th

Don't need a cache with enough ram.

The specs on your comp are quite good.  You really don't need much of a
cache, or any cache. Something else is freezing up the cursor.

Try the hardware acceleration suggestion above.
Turn it off if on and on if off and see.

I shouldn't be getting this with 8 GB of RAM. It is an HP Office

until just recently.

Could this be coming from various online sites boogering up Windows 7

the cursor from going off in the software programming lines of commands.

2020-12-29 Thread DoctorBill

OK..."Clear private data" in the TOOLS menu - clears your private data.
Had to say that for the wise guys who I know will come back with that

Now - What specifically does that clear (ctrl-shft-del) do ?

Is it dangerous to do - can I lose important stuff, change my setup by
using it.

I have Pref-Bar and do the Clear location - cache - history - DL - cookies
buttons. Does "Clear private data" do MORE than that ?

I do that in the event some intruder gets on my Compuker when I leave

I know that anyone with much compuker knowledge knows how to get there,

Is there a setting in SeaMonkey (That I can get at) to slow down the

A web page can have certain metadata that identifies other pages to
which the user might want to navigate, named as in the list you quoted.
This might be useful, eg, for an online manual. According to the
metadata available in the page being shown, the browser will enable the
corresponding toolbar buttons.

This is a feature from the 90s that's not much used now, as developers

You have PrefBar installed.
Added the Autoplay Toggle extension from
<https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/seamonkey/addon/autoplay-toggle-nonrestartless/>

That broke PrefBar?

Broke it ? It disabled PrefBar. Why would it do that ?

I had to go back and re-enable PrefBar - after I came across it by accident.
i.e. - I am NOT an aficionado of all this plugins and extensions
business. I barely understand
all the menus and actions and how to interact with them. Programs do
not "wear out' -
something got in there and boogered Autoplay up. Then Autoplay's
installer boogered up

my PrefBar. What's next ?

I installed both a long time ago and they were working fine for several
years.

Then when I re-installed the Autoplay AGAIN (it had stopped working for
some reason),

THAT disabled my PrefBar.
That kind of baloney causes people to distrust the software and the
makers of the software.
Unless you are UP on this stuff on a daily basis, you get lost in the
minutia of it.

I suppose the cause of this all is ENTROPY having it's way with us.

DoctorBill
For me there is a better solution to turning off autoplay than through a
plugin for turning off autoplay, and it is built in to SeaMonkey:

First go to the Location Bar of the browser window and type
"about:config" without the quotation marks. Then press return.  In the
page that comes up search for "media.autoplay.enabled" and set it to
false. This will turn off autoplay.

I have used this setting for years. When I want to view video on a web
page or at youtube I simply click on the video's play button.

This setting stops videos from autoplaying and lets the user decide if
they want to view a video by clicking the play button.  If this is the
function of the plugin you are using, this function is already built
into SeaMonkey by going to about:config

HEY ! GREAT ! Thanks ! It was set to False ! I changed it to True
and now

I can play videos ! YouTube etc.

It used to toggle on my menu bar, but it won't toggle there anymore.
Why would it suddenly stop toggling ?

Thanks again !

So - I looked up "Virtual Printers" on Google and found "Dopdf" - a FREE
program to write
pdf files whan you check "Print to File". I downloaded it and
installed it.

When I went to my Wife's Health Insurance Web Site and went to the
Claims Page,
I invoked the list of claims and clicked "Print This" and got the
Windows 7 Print Menu.

I chose as the printer "doPDF" which was now on the list of printers.
I clicked "Save to File" and got that same LINE - 'File Name'.. to
fill in.

I entered C:/mywifesclaimfile and hit enter.

The List I wanted was saved as a pdf to the C:/ (root) directory.

IT WORKED ! Probably work the same way on Windows 10.

So.I fingered all this out myself.Just had to educate myself (I
have a PhD in Biochemistry) so I know how to do research - that's what a
PhD Degree means.

Thanks for the journey together guys !

Note - I Googled what "MicroSoft XPS Document Writer" is all about.

THAT is what you can use to "Print to File", but it saves in a
Non-Usable file
type that ONLY XPS Document Writer can open.  Can't modify it or
convert it.

Typical MS proprietary BS - wizzing in the corners of their territory.

One Note 2016 seems to be an enigma.

DoctorBill

Using SeaMonkey 2.49.5 on Windows 10.

I click File > Print.
The Print dialog opens with my default Brother HL-2040 series printer
selected.

I select "Print to file".
I click "OK".
I get a "Save Print Output As" window where I can select a folder where
I want to save the file. Currently it is the Downloads folder.
The "File name:" field is empty. I can type anything in there that I
want to call the file.
There is a "Save as type" drop down list under that with "Printer Files
(*prn) already selected.

If I click the selection I get an "All Files (*)" choice.
Selecting that I see all the files in my Downloads folder.

If I click on my printer name, there is a drop down with other print
formats I can select in this order.

Fax
Microsoft Print to PDF
Microsoft XPS Document Writer
One Note
Send to OneNote 2016

If I was printing to a file I would chose Microsoft Print to PDF,
because it will automatically select and add the .pdf file type to
whatever I name the file in the "File name:" field.

You may have to install the Adobe Reader DC application to open and read
the PDF files if you don't have a way to open them.

Make sure you get the right version for your operating system and
disable the installation of McAfee Safe Connect.

No. The goal was to determine filename and path of the file SM would be
printing to. Seeing the reply of Bill I have checked in in a new
profile. The pref is indeed not there.

It is created the first time the print dialog is opened.

A Ha !  Question - can I insert (edit) into the Config file what you

i.e.  print_to_filename   blah   blah  blah   etc  in that Print_printer

Would that "program" into SM's config what I need ?

The only thing you need to do is to click on File > Print. :) that opens
the print dialog, creates the pref and allows you to choose filename and
path. Look at the replies of Walt.

I'm assuming here that in Win the print dialog is similar to Linux.

Hartmut

Not really.

I replied to another post with step by step instructions on how it works
for me using SeaMonkey on Windows 10, with the suggestion to select
"Microsoft Print to PDF" which should automatically add the .pdf file
type. All he has to do is type a file name into the "File name:" field.

I find your description of the problem highly confusing. ;) Assuming you
are using the possibilities of SM and are unsure, what the filename and
the location of the file, SM is printing to, is, you can do this:

Open about:config in the browser part of SM and there type in the Search
field print_to_filename.

In my case the result is

Preference Name
 print.print_to_filename
Value
 /home/hafi/mozilla.pdf

.
I tried to put a PATH into the Filename - like
C:/blahblah
and THAT went to the C - root directory - but was unreadable by Open
office,

NotePad and Acrobat. It is a strange kind of file. (?)
I then tried giving it an extension .prn. Same result even with a .prn
ext.

I am thinking that I NEED to find a program that shows up in the PRINT Box
as a printer but just saves what is picked on a web page (in my case a
list of
Healthcare claims) to some USABLE type of file - to be opened by some
program.

I suppose that is called a "VIRTUAL Printer"

No telling where it gets printed to on your machine or what it's name
is. Print another one and watch very carefully where it goes and what
it is named.
Or, use search everything to find it... if you know it's name.

In a quick test here, when I gave it only a filename, the file was
created in the same directory as seamonkey.exe.

If you start Seamonkey using a shortcut, I would start by looking in the
"starting directory" for that shortcut (see "Start in" in the shortcut
properties: https://i.stack.imgur.com/rvcI1.png )

.
BINGO ! THAT is where it is ! No file extension, though !
Tried opening with Open Office - got mostly ascii characters
No File type ? Acrobat cannot open it, either.
The TYPE just says "File".

From my ignorance - do I have to install some kind of File Handling
Program

to do this ? Google search says this is OLD OLD stuff from many years ago.

I think what you (WaltS48) are describing is a different feature, the
"print to file" option in the GTK print dialog, which (at least here) is
shown as if it were a printer itself (in the list of printers or
printing methods which are available).

What DoctorBill is describing sounds like the "Print to file" checkbox
in the Windows print dialog. This option, instead of sending the data to
the printer, will store it in a file.

In my experience, the "File:" prompt will accept a full path, that is,
starting from a "drive letter" and with directories, say,
A:\dir\example.dat.

So do I also get a "break"?  I'm 82, and beside building desktops I
redesign old cars.

I currently maintain four desktops and three laptops.

The apps are on an apps partition and the data is on a data partition. I
can reinstall or replace an OS and the most I need to do to the apps is
create a fresh run object (shortcut).

And updates are done in isolation.  I also always have multiple versions
of each app.  I never replace an app or OS until I an convinced the
replacement is superior.  So every computer has multiple versions of Win
and Mozilla and/or Mozilla clones.

On desktops, the apps are on one HDD and apps and data are on another
HDD.  I have clones of each.  So my backup and restore is to swap a HDD.
And the OSs don't know the apps/data has changed and the apps/data
doesn't know the OSs has changed.

With a couple decent tools building a partition structure is not difficult.

And Mozilla products are very easy to organize.

.
Well congratulations on being 82 ! AND being able to do ALL THAT ! Wow.

Each of us has our Limitations (as Dirty Harry said) and I have my own.
I hope - if I make it to 82 - that I can do as well as you are now !

The same on Windows.

The profiles end up where ever you put them.  But you do need to
specify.  I put the apps and profiles in separate trees of my choice
and location, and I put mail in a separate tree in a third location.

And if you allowed an install routine to place the profile and mail in
a default location, it is "too much work" only if you are unable to

Or don't want to think about how you want to set it up. Too damn lazy.

This is not the latest version ... that would be 2.49.5 although
there are even later (trial) versions out there

Go to https://www.seamonkey-project.org/ to get the latest (approved)
version for your OS. ;-P

And note that because even the latest SeaMonkey version advertises
itself as based on FireFox V 52, some/many sites will still suggest
it is a very old Version.

.
I come to this NewsGroup FROM either THIS old HP Business Computer using
Windows 7 using 2.49.1
OR
My DELL "All-In-One" used business compuker using Windows 10 and 2.49.5.
Two different SeaMonkeys depending on which I am using AT THE TIME.

I can relate to this, Bill!

I dual boot this HP Laptop. On Windows 7, I have installed SeaMonkey
2.49.5. On my Linux installation, I have SeaMonkey 2.49.1 - I've
downloaded the 2.49.5 and I will get around to updating one day! ;-P

I am NOW on the old HP with Win 7.  I downloaded 2.49.5 but have not
run it yet.  All the 'extras' (extensions and Plugins) that I have on
this 2.49.1

will have to be re-setup  on the 2.49.5.a PITA !
As time goes on, I forget HOW to do all that - (I'm 76) and struggle
with "Keeping Up"

with all the new changes.  Ignorance is expensive.

Thanks for the suggestion and comments.
How can the 2.49.5 be made to spoof with the new FireFox V52
recognition signal ?

Two ways ... either, first, in your Preferences
(Edit->Preferences->Advanced) and tick the box to Advertise Firefox
compatibility. That will tell every website you go to that your program
is like Firefox

But, it will still mention SeaMonkey, and some sites will be confused by
this so they still will not work, so

Second, in the web browser part of SeaMonkey type "about:config"
(without the inverted commas), accept the warning and then type
'Useragent' in the Search: line. That will just leave those preferences
that include the word useragent. One of those will be
'general.useragent.compatMode.firefox'. Double click on that preference
will change the 'Value' from 'false' to 'true'.

Additionally, if there is a particular website that is causing problems
(often banking sites), in this config page, you can add a preference
that would apply only to that particular website and set it to 'spoof'
Firefox only just for that website, but I'm unsure how to enter a new
preference like this.

Maybe someone else will suggest how to do that.

And it just occurred to me that there is a third method of changing the
Preferences ... by setting up a preference that applies only to that
particular website and saving that/those preferences in a *TEXT* file
called UserConfig and saving that file in the same location as your
Preferences file. This method allows you to add comments against each
preference that you add/change so that you can know why you did that
when your memory fails you! ;-)

You can check out the available preferences at ...
http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries

DoctorBill (still trying !)

Keep on trying, Doc!

I have all that you suggested running. No "Text" though
Some site still don't like my system.

Thanks !

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: this is pretty easy with Mozilla applications.  What to
do:

1) Install Seamonkey on the new machine, but don't start it up (i.e.,
don't run the setup wizard).

2) Get a copy of the contents of %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Seamonkey (the
entire folder) on the old machine. If you haven't set up networked
sharing, the fastest way to do this is to copy to a USB device (thumb
drive or external hard drive).

3) On the new machine, copy all your data %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Seamonkey,
and you're all set to go, where Seamonkey on the new machine is
working with an exact and complete copy of what was on your old machine.

I will note that for this, I'm using Windows environment variables (as
Seamonkey does itself) to find your profile data, rather than trying
to explain how to find the data in C:\Users\  If you enter the
location in the address bar in the Windows Explorer, that will get you
to the correct location, even though your AppData folder is normally
hidden. The environment variable gets you to the correct location on
the first try, and ignores the fact that the folder is hidden.

As an aside, this is useful to know for the purposes of making backups
of profiles.  Because AppData is hidden, Microsoft makes it difficult
to back up data stored there, and there are a few apps where you
actually want to back up your data.  All Mozilla apps (not just
SeaMonkey, but Firefox and Thunderbird, as well) store data in
AppData, and if you know how to access via environment variable, then
it's relatively easy to make sure that data gets included when you're
doing backups.

One minor complication -- I moved a Seamonkey profile to a new
computer several months ago, using this methodology.  The one problem
that I had was with newsgroups, in handling read/unread.  For most of
my newsgroups, I was able to get things to behave, but in a few cases,
I had to resort to doing a Repair Folder (and re-downloading the
entire history of headers).  And in one or two newsgroups, that didn't
work, and I had to unsubscribe and resubscribe the newsgroups.  Not
really a significant problem, but annoying.

2019-12-14 Thread DoctorBill
Right now, as I write this, I am on a Windows 7 system using 2.49.1
SeaMonkey.

I bought a Dell "All-In-One" compuker with the latest Windows 10 running
(Uggg!) and loaded

SeaMonkey 2.49.5.

Can I COPY my E-Mail, Bookmarks, Passwords, etc from this machine to the
newer one ?

It has been YEARS since I did such a thing and I don't remember how.

Things are changing so fast !

User Agent in Prefbar

2019-10-28 Thread DoctorBill

As you may know, Google has messed with their Search Engine and now
the cursor has changed position, etc.

If I change the User Agent in "Prefbar" to - IE 9.0 win 7 - the Google
cursor goes back to what it used to be.

Is there some way to make this User Agent PERMANENT in SeaMonkey ?
i.e. - to make it always use IE 9.0 win 7 as the User Agent ?

Loading Windows 10 on Used Computer - Advice ?

2019-10-28 Thread DoctorBill

I have purchased Windows 10 for $110 from WalMart.

Comes with OEM DVD, Cert of Authenticity and the Key Code.

I have to load it onto the Formatted Hard Drive - i.e. It is NOT
an Upgrade.

I will continue to use SeaMonkey with Windows 10.
Been getting a LOT of warnings that my Browser is "Outdated" and
won't work anymoreLike my College E-Mail, my bank, Jocko's Homemade
Medicine and Greeting Card Company (joking), etc, etc, etc

Any sage advice (other than "Don't Do It !") about going up to Win 10
BEFORE I take the big step ? ! Yes - backing up stuff - but I have to
RELOAD

all my software ! Aaarrrgh !

Does FoxNews do this to others also ?

2019-10-12 Thread DoctorBill

I go to FoxNews every day to see what's happening in the World.

Quite often NOW, the pages load ungodly amounts of garbage and bounce
around, flip up and down - I cannot read anything w/o it flipping somewhere
else on the page or just NOT RESPONDING at all !

If I try to click on a link, the page jumps away before I can settle the
cursor on the link ! I make a lot of "comments" on FoxNews..some nasty.

Does this happen to others, or do I have some "Toggle" set incorrectly ?
I have "AutoPlay" set to off. AdBlocker is on (they don't like THAT!).

All this jumping around makes going to FoxNews rather pointless as I cannot
read it nor click on links ! Am I stupid or is FoxNews ?

Save it in the Password Manager. Then SM will automatically enter it
whenever you visit that site.

I have to enter my name in a Complex format with "codes" - so it does
not act like passwords do. Otherwise I would do that.

If I go thru the "login" procedure, then bail out w/o getting out of
SM or clearing my cookies, when I go back - all that name stuff is there

So I figure it is stored in the cookies for the college.
If I clear the cookies, I have to go thru all the rigamarole AGAIN.

MB became confusing some time back when they went from a simple scan on
demand to including every other anti-virus thing in a suite.
Download and install the free version but don't check the box for "start

Also, in Setup / Application, be sure to turn off EVERYTHING, otherwise
it will continually report back to their home planet.

I cannot find the "Free Version" on Google.
