Try going to [Help > Troubleshooting Information] on the menu bar. Does
the Show Folder button for Profile Folder work there?

this tip works for me
(if I click about:support and try open profile, nothing happens)

Because file protocol does not launch OS's file manager but opens
file|directory within the browser, read-only. The profile button is
supposed to open you profile in your registered file manager.

How did you install SeaMonkey? For me with Ubuntu 16.04 using the PPA
ubuntuzilla the button works as expected, Nautilus launches with PWD at
my profile DIR.

I was trying both 2.40 and 2.49. OK I have it working now. I had to
install Thunar. I expect it is using the desktop environment settings
and I don't think I actually have one installed.

I wonder why it didn't just use file:/// ?

That is supposed to open the part of the shell that shows disk directories.

Also, what version of SeaMonkey are you using?

SeaMonkey 2.40? That button works just fine using SeaMonkey 2.40
on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS.

Also there SM 2.40 under WinXP Pro.
